Salo was a brilliant and underrated driver. I will never forget that drive in Germany in 99' when he let Irvine pass because of team orders and cost him his only potential victory. It shows what a great driver can achieve in a great team and car. Was disappointed that Irvine didn't better acknowledge what Salo had given up for him and that Irvine didn't even come close to capitalize on it.

Did you guys know at Ferrari asked him to join their team 2000. But he reject that offer becose he know at he is not allowed to fight of victories and championshp...

Later 2001-2002 ferrari made him offer of testdriver seat but he reject that one too and joined to Toyota

Salo was quick indeed,but he proved he is not good at developing the car.He still wanted to drive something to do with Ferrari,so he entered Sauber,using 99 Ferrari engine i 2000. If he was a good developer,he would raise the team.He did not and struggled...the same again in Toyota in 2002

Salo was too quick for Ferrari. 1999 he drove fantastic weekend in Germany and he started really well in Hungarian GP practise. But because Ferrari got the clown with broken leg back home and Salo was SO quick some instance desided to take electrical benefits away from Salo´s car after that practise. It would have been too much for F1 if there would have been two quickest guys-both with blond hair and both from Finland.

When people belive Kimi Räikkönen is the first finn driving for Ferrari they seem to forget the first finn to drive for Ferrari was Mika Salo. Also he could have beenn the first finn to win for Ferrari in Hockenheim 1999.

for me salo was like panis, not the speed of a world champion, but he almost never made an error, very down to earth, great technically and a perfect gentlemen, there are 'great' drivers, excatly the opposite

Mika deserved so much more from F1. Toyota were way out of order to get rid of him after just one season, after all the testing and work he did for them before they started F1 in 2002.

this is a really well put together tribute to one of the most likable F1 drivers ever what a legend. Glad to say i met him on many ocassions he was a really nice down to earth guy. He should have been given a greater chance to drive for a top team in his carreer and although it was good he drove for ferrari it wasnt enough really. Would have won that race if it wasnt for bloody Irvine!!
