Salo was a brilliant and underrated driver. I will never forget that drive in Germany in 99' when he let Irvine pass because of team orders and cost him his only potential victory. It shows what a great driver can achieve in a great team and car. Was disappointed that Irvine didn't better acknowledge what Salo had given up for him and that Irvine didn't even come close to capitalize on it.
Don't forget what happened after Salo spent a year developing Sauber in 2000... Just who got his chance to drive on points in his first race in 2001 ;) And how high Sauber happened to finish in 2001! Big thanks to Mika
@Pirkinmaa I agree if he had been given a winning car he would have delivered. The likes of David Coulthard had many chances to win a championship but never really got close
I love Mika Salo! Without his driving under influence... He would be A LOT greater than he was. Probably a World Champion. One of the fastest drivest in the world!
Salon ura käytännöllisesti loppui jo F3-kaudella kun heppu kärysi ratista. Se esti silloin pääsyn formula ykkösiin. Ilman sitä episodia Salo olisi saattanut saada paikan huipputallissa.
Funny how during his F1 career Salo was often bragging about being a better and faster driver than Michael Schumacher, and then he just barely managed to beat Pedro Diniz.
Did you guys know at Ferrari asked him to join their team 2000. But he reject that offer becose he know at he is not allowed to fight of victories and championshp...
Later 2001-2002 ferrari made him offer of testdriver seat but he reject that one too and joined to Toyota
Salo was quick indeed, but he proved he is not good at developing the car.He still wanted to drive something to do with Ferrari,so he entered Sauber, using 99 Ferrari engine i 2000. If he was a good developer,he would raise the team.He did not and struggled...the same again in Toyota in 2002
Salo was too quick for Ferrari. 1999 he drove fantastic weekend in Germany and he started really well in Hungarian GP practise. But because Ferrari got the clown with broken leg back home and Salo was SO quick some instance desided to take electrical benefits away from Salo´s car after that practise. It would have been too much for F1 if there would have been two quickest guys-both with blond hair and both from Finland.
Mika Salo oli yhtä hyvä kuski, kun Häkkinen. Salo ei vaan ikinä päässy näyttämään taitojansa huippu tallissa. Muutaman kisan sai ajaa Ferrarilla ja heti synty tulosta.
Great driver.. But Salo fckd up his reputation in the eyes of the sponsors and at the same time, his F1 career in the to teams by driving under drunk in the UK.
Yeah he really paid a big price for that one mistake. He could have been a great F1 driver maybe a champion or atleast a contender. Too bad since he was a great driver and still is!
He showed his potential as a great driver when he could easely beat eddie Irvine! but team order where his dead at ferrari. to bad because he could have won a race or 2!!!!
legend. Underrated and never got a real chance to shine. Had the pleasure of meeting him on three occasions at the british Grand Prix, cool and down to earth guy.
When people belive Kimi Räikkönen is the first finn driving for Ferrari they seem to forget the first finn to drive for Ferrari was Mika Salo. Also he could have beenn the first finn to win for Ferrari in Hockenheim 1999.
yep,he would easily how won if not Irvine was in the hunt for the 1999 title,so Salo had to slow down and let him pass, remember Salo's brilliant 5'th with a very uncompetive Tyrrell in Monaco 1997? Didn't do a single pitstop and had part of the front wing missing...
ohhoh atigerst aika kovan väitteen heitit.Mut jos keskivertoo huonompi niin miten salo sit oli säännöllisesti tallikavereitaan(zanardi, katayama, diniz, mcnish)nopeempi?okei ehkä hävis irvinelle mutta kaikki panostiki irvinen mestaruuteen siin vaihees...
Sad that Salo never got chance to drive in any good teams except Ferrari, but there he was the 2nd driver and tried to help other drivers to achieve the wins :(
for me salo was like panis, not the speed of a world champion, but he almost never made an error, very down to earth, great technically and a perfect gentlemen, there are 'great' drivers, excatly the opposite
Mika deserved so much more from F1. Toyota were way out of order to get rid of him after just one season, after all the testing and work he did for them before they started F1 in 2002.
this is a really well put together tribute to one of the most likable F1 drivers ever what a legend. Glad to say i met him on many ocassions he was a really nice down to earth guy. He should have been given a greater chance to drive for a top team in his carreer and although it was good he drove for ferrari it wasnt enough really. Would have won that race if it wasnt for bloody Irvine!!
It's sad Mika Salo only got to drive a competitive F1 car for 6 races in Ferrari in 1999. He would have won in Hockenheim 1999 if team orders were not to let Irvine win.

Getting 5th in Monaco '97 in the Tyrrell was a strong drive too, especially as he went the entire race without pitting and a damaged front wing.
