  • thanks for this, I played this morning and got some great shots. Sometimes simple is best. I did have a hard time getting the focus just right and still need some work on it but had fun. Thanks again

  • Great tips!!!

  • Clicked Subscribed. Looking forward to your new videos. :)

  • My Bed, Now.

  • Happy to find you here. I like your videos so much guy. Thanks.

  • Easily one of the greatest channels I've come across. Thanks so much.

  • What lens did you use ?

  • great..thanks for sharing man...

  • Just had great time spending 2 hrs. with my 8 yr. old daughter taking pictures of waters drops. Her creative mind was at work by giving me different things for the backdrop, adding magnets in the water...time well spent... Thanks Gavin!

  • Great tips!!!! Can you add more bokeh to the back of the water drops?

  • thanks for sharing the tips! i made a few water drop shots with my olympus e-pl1 and they came out great! here they are-- josecphoto.blogspot.com

  • Hei. Thank for sharing

  • Thank you very much for the professional and clear review! I can't wait trying this out on my own camera, even though my camera is not as professional as yours.

  • WE got the SAME camera :D

  • hello gavin i noticed that you pictures were flashing black from the light, is this from over exposure and do i need to worry about it.only its quite annooying when im trying to show people pics on my camera. im a begginer by the way, and you make everything so easy to understand so thanks for that

  • Thanks a lot man I just took good shots with your technique! Even with no external flash!

  • Mate, I'm impressed with your tutorial!! Regards, Mario.

  • maybe this guy isn't a genius but he has taken his time and effort to show us what is needed to creat a perfect picture.

Thanks for your video's and the time you take to make them, has tought the amature photogragher(me) quite a lot

  • Love it!

  • Great video, what shutter speed would you recommend?

  • thanks, ive learned so much from this video

  • i just did it, I dont have the off camera flash but I made do and I got some pretty cool shots

  • very informative, mate.

  • I feel that i should have to pay something to you for your extremely helpful video. I would like to know what would you recommend to me to sort out my problems with my ebay listing images. My problem is I always have my item photos kind of dark. When I take my images during the daylight they seem ok but I hate to take pictures at night. I just don't get detail but less detailed darker images. Thanks for tips in your video.

  • @iddqds I might be of help here. It is important to purchase a 100 watt Halogen Spotlight when having issues with still life photography indoors or at night. I use my bulb on a desk lamp because I cannot afford all the fancy equipment. The bulb costs somewhere around 7 to 9 dollars at Home depot. This light will allow you to use a rather fast shutter speed without sacrificing ISO or aperture which will result in low quality images. It worked for me and I hope this will help you!

  • @iddqds I experimented to try and figure out why your images are too dark. I concluded that you need more lightning. You will also need vellum to bounce light back into the room making it even brighter. In this video the man is rather bright, he has excellent lighting in his studio allowing him to raise the shutter speed for sharp water drops and keeping his aperture only at 8. Get as much outdoor lightning as you can! Until then try to stick with still images so you can put lower shutter speed.

  • This man would make an excellent teacher. He's lovely and makes you want to listen to him.

  • what kinda lens were you using. reason i ask this is because i have a 18-55 but i wasnt sure if i needed a macro lens

  • damn.. i dont have a tower

  • This is one hoopy frood. He certainly knows where HIS towel is!.

  • this video is not good at all. it's not even acceptable!! know why?

    cuz it's fucking amazing ;D

  • will i need a macro lens for this?

  • Yea I agree, this guy has his act together, keep up the good work.

  • Fucking genius.

  • what you think is the best camera what you can get???or your favourite camera???thank you

  • I tried it and had great results. :)

  • meh, ive done this with my d3000 and use my sink as the whole shebang experiment, and it worked pretty damn well lol. Though ima try this with much more experience at hand. pretty cool vid tho!

  • hope no one will use condom instead of plastic for the water :)

  • Hi Gavin,

just wanted to knw if we can get this with an on-camera flash? how different would it be and why u have suggested off camera flash?

  • @maroonwork It's obvious. Considering the position of the camera, with built-in flash, you'll light up everything (from the front objects like the drop, to the background) with equal amount of sharp light. The pics will look flat. With the off-camera flash, you have the control to point the light only at the background, which will blur it and reflect it backwards to the drop, thus creating these nice light effects and contrast in the shape of the drops. The pics have depth and layers of light.

  • @maroonwork If you put a piece of paper in front of the flash you can dissipate its light and prevent "hard" lights. The more thick the paper, more dissipated light.

  • All props to this guy so far ive never met another nice photographer and also one willing to help others this guy is a genius and a top bloke good stuff thanks for all the videos mate :)

  • crazy how a little drop of water has such an amazing ...uh, beauty.

  • wow... nice trick

  • Actually, the nice thing here is that you have a photographer with a nice personality, humble, that knows his craft and is willing to share... That is very hard to find.

  • this guy is a genius

  • If I don't have an external flash, would it work if I just had a bright light constantly shining on the paper?

  • 29 people got tired of getting covered in water droplets ? ;) Great tutorial. Looking forward to trying this myself ! Many thanks !

  • What kind of lens should be used for this?

  • your videos are GREAT THANK YOU FOR THE TUTORIALS you are a talented photographer!

  • how far is the camera from the water drop?

    thank you!

  • Superb, just subscribed to his tube, Im off with my camera now.

  • Incredible! Thanks for the tips. I am going to try it.

  • I love the tutorial... What kind of lens would you recommend for this kind of thing? I do have a limited budget...

  • this is an amazing tutorial, i watched a couple of other videos of people who have obviously tried to copy you but none compare to this ! my set up was very much a poor persons setup using a lucazade bottle with a tiny hole in it for the water and a ready meal container for the water to land in, GREAT VID ! :)

  • Great tips! Check out my photography website WAJPhotography

  • Another superb tutorial Gavin, thank you very much, I have tried your lighting set up and of course it works fine, instead of using a plastic bag for the water drops, I used an eye dropper and found I could control the water drops better this way..

keep up the good work sir and thanks again.

  • This is a really great video. I have always loved at home experiments with basic lighting and found items and the results you get here are just fantastic. Thank you so much for making videos like this, it's really encouraging.

  • Can you use non strobe light (always on lighting)?

  • Do you recon you could achieve the same, or a similar, effect by just steadily back-lighting the tray? i.e. Shining a small desk lamp on the paper? I only ask because I don't have an off camera flash.

  • Great,easy to follow,thanks A+++

  • ได้เทคนิคแล้วว Stop Action Thank You!

  • i've been shooting feather drops for a little bit and wanted to try this for a while now. Fantastic tutorial!

  • Just started shooting water. Great tuttorial. I've had more luck with rain though alot cheaper. Thanks for the wisdom.

  • very useful tutorial, thank you. Out of interest, what lens did you use?

  • THANKS LOADS !

  • I'm so exited to try this:D

  • 2 words,"HATS OFF!"...this guy is a bloody genius!

  • @esaskhan95 One word... respect :D

  • @esaskhan95 Hats off to the guy for making a video, but why is he a genius? It's not like he's doing anything that many people before him haven't done for many years!

  • @kw757 He is a genius because of his ability to break it down to a simple short video that contains all the information that one requires.

  • i find it so easy to find my way around the camera when he explains, so for me as a beginner its great. i aint got a flash gun yet so can i do this buy using an out door light shining onto the paper

  • Great video. I've never thought about taking pics of water until this.

  • Oh the towel is your best friend that's telling me somthing.

  • Man ur are the best . Thanks alot for sharing this info . U cant find lots of good people today tht shares info

  • You're the perfect photographer. You have a superb technique but, most of all, a GREAT MIND, with beautiful ideas!

Also you have, in spite of your cleverness, the humility to share and teach your knowledge.

    Congratulations!

  • FOr the record, I love your utorials Gavin. But I just tried this exact same setup using just my camera flash and my pictures turned out great without the off camera flash. Great tutorials though and keep em coming :).

  • can i do this with my 18-55 lens or you use any particular one

  • Any chance of the cheap flash gun link (anyone)?

  • How can 28 people dislike this video? it's perfect!! You're amazing Gavin!

  • I bought my Macro lens yesterday. Thank you for the clear direction. You are a very good instructor.

  • Now that's photography!!! Thank you Mr. Gavin!

  • I just had a shoot using this tutorial and it worked great! I spray painted a piece of paper black and blue to use as the color filter and it turned out well. Thanks so much gavin!

  • Excellent tutorial, thank you very much for sharing!

  • wait, whats a "byro" pen???

  • wowwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Super Tips 1a

  • I think the shutter should be a lower then your true sync speed because these remote triggers are radio and do not always transmit as fast as they claim. with a setup this close, you could use a TTL cable and set the flash to high speed synch, to get a really sharp splash. Alternatively, If you work in a dark room you could drop the flash power to it's lowest setting and get the fastest pulse also creating a very sharp image.

  • Thanks for this! You might have mentioned it, but what would be an appropriate shutter speed?

  • You have wonderful videos. What do you do with your photos? Do you sell calenders or something?

  • Hi mate, thanks for the upload. Did this and ended up with some beautiful pics. Experimenting is the key. I actually layed an aqua coloured plastic cover from a folder onto the bottom of the baking tray and used a flash which gave me a magical look. It really was just experimenting with different things but this vid gave me the basic setup which I didn't know............thanks again!

  • No CLS :)

  • So good! Just did this.

  • best vid ever very helpfull:)

  • Just like the practical way you show these tricks.

  • Thanks for this.

I've tried it myself, and it worked pretty well

    Thanks very much.

  • who wouldve thought david mitchell is also a photographer!

  • great video thanks alot i was wondering how to do this. and now i know where to get a cheap unit to make my flash wireless, i was going to get a crappy hotshoe cord for the same price until i saw this

  • thanks i'm going to try this .

  • nice work, very profecional!!!!!

  • ive done that with Canon SX130is, made me very happy since it is a slow point and shoot

  • @TheRanrey that used to be my primary camera. unfortunately, things like the shutter speed, noise etc was a bit frustrating to work with. now, i use the 600d. best decision of my life :)

  • @nonsoville

Yea, im kinda wanting to move to a DSLR now, and im thinking of telling my mom to buy either a Canon 5d Mk II or Nikon D700 as a gift since I'm only 15 and jobless XD

  • @TheRanrey i see, it's worth the jump.

  • @TheRanrey Oh really?? Thats great! Now I really cant wait to get mine in 2 days..i was wondering if it could do this:))

  • @wcnprincess

    yes!

in just takes practice to get the timing right, usually press the shutter button if the drop is halfway there and make sure you use flash and the right place where to focus.

  • i don't see you use that flash when taking those picture. or i just don't see it because it's already bright?

  • beautiful!

  • Brilliant video,I'll have to have a go at this. Thanks.

  • Hi Gavin can I use any digital camera like Kodak M1073 for my shots I'm going garden camera shooting on friday should be fun you make things so easy. I did my first attempt at mirror box yesterday and rain effect thank you smuch

  • is that a canon 7d?

  • @SuperWario094 No.

There's no live view Button or Movie Mode.

And the Button layout Is Different.

The 7D was released several months after this video was made.

    It's more than Likely a <50D.

  • @SuperWario094 Nope, Canon EOS 7D was announced in September, this is from May.

  • @SuperWario094 i think its a 1000D

  • @erenb96 its a 40d

  • @erenb96 correction its a 7d

  • @SuperWario094 Super... thats not the 7D.

  • Thanks Gavin, I'm so much more confident with my photography now thanks to your videos.

  • i love the clear, concise way you tutor.

  • Some of my water splashes and collisions can be viewed if you gogle mike dickeson flickr.

  • would i be able to do something similar with a fujifilm s1900/?

  • post my damn comment!

  • hi sorry would you answer one question?

you are using a flashlight but

you can either have the roomlight on or of?

or does the light of the room affects?

  • @Maureenitz his shutter speed is 1/250 and his ISO I am sure is also very low, at that setting your ambient light (room light) insignificant.

  • this is very helpful! When taking the actual photo though... I guess its just timing?

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to create this awesome tutorial!!!

  • that was awesome

  • woow

  • What lens did you use? I believe that is the 5D mk II.

  • What kind of lens are you using? macro?
