  • To answer @jetbluensw's question, AirNZ do not apply overweight charges per kilo domestically. You are allowed up to 25kg per bag, after that you can not have more kg in a bag. You must use another bag, costs for which go up gradually in price. So...

    1st - free, 2nd- NZ$15, 3rd - NZ$50, 4th+ $150.

Since to put it on the belt you need a tag, and to get extra tags you have to pay, it seems to work pretty well. Plus, as cranky says, there is behind the scenes work too.

  • Would this be feasible in the US?

  • It could, in theory.

Though with increased security, perhaps not.

All it would take is for one Airline to give it a go though, I think.

  • How does Air NZ assess checked bag fees, then? Or do they have them?

  • Good question - everyone gets at least one bag for free. If you have to pay for excess, then you can do that at the kiosk.

  • @crankyflier But how do they weigh the bags and then apply overweight charges?

  • There are a bunch of scales around the check in area, so if you're being honest, you can weigh the bag and then pay with the kiosk. If you try to beat the system, they'll catch you by weighing it behind the scenes. They'll call your name and make you pay for the excess bag if they see it.
