  • Pharmaceutical companies are in it for the money not for us to be heathy and happy!! I have been taking st johns wort which has been very effective for me. Plus no side effects like when I took citalopram. Society is creating depression though with is need to screw the people in favor of greed and power! This of course will collapse and in my opinion the sooner the better!!

  • AD's rule

  • 1) Ive had depression, my view is that the cause of depression is a sick society, not faulty brain chemicals or genetics - they are excuses for abuses. When your basic needs are consistently not met, for whatever reason, you will justifiably get frustrated and pissed off about it. If then youre rational anger is not accepted either (by the people around you) and refused expression then you can end up turning your anger upon yourself.

  • @gurtjobby5 i believe you said very well, i totally agree with you thanks for your comment

  • 2) That is depression, in my opinion; rational anger and frustration that was originally directed toward the outer world thats turned against the self because its not allowed to be expressed outwards.

The reason our species is in such a mess is because our basic biological needs (for love, emotional connection, security, freedom of healthy expression, and understanding, etc) are not being properly met, from birth onwards.

  • 3) And its a vicious circle; children who havent had their needs met usually turn into parents who dont know how to meet the needs of their children and so on. Its been going on for thousands of years and its not going to change by denying whats really going on, and hiding behind chemical imbalance and genetic theories!..

  • The bad food in today's society; all the sugar, fats, salt, etc. that's what's causing so much depression.

  • My Physic wants to feed me pills. I might just smoke some bud, and take photos.

  • I take Wellbutrim, the max is 450mg a day.

I accidentally drank once 750mg because I forgot that I already had taking my pill, it was a stupid mistake on my part.

  • I have mild depression which is quite debilitating at times. But I keep telling my doctor my depression is due to modernity and society. She just nods and then prescribes me more pills. Something is not quite right here.

  • Clinical medical doctors know very little about psychology, and worse psychiatrist don't have very good answers, Hypnotherapy works but most people are sceptical about this form of psychology because of fakes in the wood pile. Go to the NGH (national guild of hypnotists) web site and just call a clinical hypnotherapist near you and talk to them, talking costs nothing.

  • A leading researcher @ Harvard is claiming that depression is probably 30 different

conditions. The same has been said about

    schizophrenia. These illnesses are systemic

and not only confined to the brain. Once

that is accepted you then go beyond the

    boundaries of psychiatry. Neurogenesis has

    replaced Serotonin(Peter Kramer again) as

the new reason why Prozac works so well on 1 in 10 patients. Of coarse you have to trade

ED for smarts. How ironic is that?

  • The United States pharmaceutical crap is something you will never see in Canada because of our health care plan. We pay at MOST $1.00 a pill.

That woman is soooo $%#@ing annoying- why doesn't she let the callers' questions get answered?

  • these comments are fascinating

  • Getting down to a real basic level - when nebulous solutions and answers become complex, are these typically correct? If a particular psychiatric disorder was FACTUALLY proven to exist with either a blood or other such laboratory examination (e.g. lowered serotonin levels), that particular disorder would no longer be relegated to or belong to psychiatric evaluation. It would fall in the realm of biology, physiology or perhaps neurology -- the results would be psychiatrists losing money.

  • LMAO at that last color and the expression on her face, bahahaha

  • A placebo effect + minor stimulation can also make a person think they're really getting better, since the placebo is really strong. This may account for a few seemingly 'changing quickly', or just a complete change in attitude when a ray of hope shines in.

  • Part 3

Men in particular should be advised about the sexual side effects of SSRIs - there is some emerging evidence of penile anesthesia and some suggestion that the sexual side effects may not reverse in all people. Do a search. The Reponsible Parent's Guide to Health Mood-Boosters for all the Family, BLTC and Hedweb have been invaluable to me.

  • Part 1

These guys are mostly right - the Serotonin "imbalance" hypothesis is not well supported in the scientific literature but Serotonin has some role. There is growing evidence that Prozac (Fluoxitine) and perhaps the other SSRIs function by influencing neurogenesis - new brain cell growth and increasing plasticity - new connections and that it is these processes that may contribute to any anti-depressant effect.

    Part 2 follows

  • Part 2

SSRIs purportedly increase synaptic levels of Serotonin. However, a drug that has been available for quite a while in Europe called Stablon purports to be a Serotonin re-uptake enhancer - effectively one would think helping some cells suck up Serotonin from the synaptic cleft -- the opposite action of SSRIs!.

    Part 3 follows

  • A Serotonin Re-uptake Enhancer sounds like it's pretty close to the effect of 2-CB which used to be used by psychiatrists in the early 90s to help them emotionally equate themselves with their patients. Although 2-CB is illegal now and the effects were too powerful and closer to Ecstasy. The best depression treatment would be like a weaker 2-CB without an addictive property.

  • I was on Paxil for 9 months, prescribed to me for shoulder pain! My doctor said I was carrying all of my stress in my shoulders. I was working full time, going to college full time, had an autistic 4 yr old son, and feeling very overwhelmed. About 7 months after I started taking the Paxil, my shoulder got so bad that I went to the ER. It turns out that I have calcific tendonitis, and that is why my shoulders always hurt. While I was on Paxil, I failed 2 courses. I had never failed before.

  • It is all about the money. I have been depressed for over a month now. I am taking zoloft and depakote, because I have bipolar disorder. So far I do not feel any better.

  • I have not heard any scientific proof for their claim. But then again, the level of the "debate" is inferior.

  • The Point these guys were trying to drive home is this- People are not being given correct or enough information to make an informative decision before taking an anti-depressant. This is a responsibility of the Doctor and the pharmaceutical company. Both the Doctor and the pharmaceutical companies are being negligent.

  • It's a complex situation that needs a lot more attention and research but this debate does raise some interesting points about the current situation, but offers no insight in where to go from here, and as such is a disappointment, but I'm glad to of watched it anyway.

  • I've struggled with depression for a good number of years with varying levels of anxiety as well as depression, they are linked in many cases that I'm sure your aware of. But I am no closer to an understanding of how to resolve my situation and am fearful of taking the drugs due to the side effects for one thing and having to come back off them again in the future, which also can cause the depression to elevate.

  • Very interesting the placebo effect. In all the years I've taken antidepressants administered by at least 10 different physicians, and had blood tests, I never once have I had a blood test to specifically check my seratonin levels.
