Greely's growls kick ass, better than most Thrash vocalists.

However Iced Earth's later albums are power metal and wouldn't sound right with a good vocalist.

It's just the style, good vocalists and Thrash don't sound right together. =P

No one is disputing Ripper's singing ability, we're disputing if he is the right "voice" for IE.  He isn't. He doesn't have the aggression which is a common theme in many of IE's tracks.
