  • I wish they'd remake this using people closer to the descriptions in the book and have Ralph be straight, would be so much more satisying. Chamberlain was technically brilliant, he always is, but having a man who really loves women would be more interesting.

  • @TheSkylur44

What kind of freaky priest does that! LOL. He could have just told her off! Gee Whiz. Then again, he didnt; resist Meggie unbuttoning his shirt. Makes me wonder, he was a flirt. Yes it's weird seeing the romance scenes knowing he prefers men, but in interviews he comes across as having enjoyed kissing Rachel Ward. LOL those scenes were hot! Maybe he is a little bi?

  • @cherrypop1771 Not to confuse you, I meant tell Mary off. Maybe she has had younger men before, Money talks. Look at the bimbos who sleep with men 40 or 50 years older than them . Hello hugh hefner!

  • @cherrypop1771 Maybe, but I really would love to see this remade and including the time before they moved to Aus, I love particularly the very beginning of the book and Meggie's birthday and Agnes, her doll, and the Italian girl she made friends with in school and the head lice, etc; they cut that whole part out. Maybe someday they will remake it.

  • @TheSkylur44

I wouldn't mind seeing that either. I doubt it will get remade. It would be cool if Rachael agreed to play the mom.

  • @cherrypop1771 I agree, what a shame they remake everything else but not this. *sigh*

  • @TheSkylur44 If a straight actor with less talent than the "technically brilliant Chamberlain" had played Ralph, would it have been "more interesting"? Are you saying that gay actors can't convincingly play straight roles when so many straight actors do the reverse? Good acting is always good acting. By the way, are you aware that Barbara Stanwyck was at least bisexual if not a lesbian. Doesn't seem to have interfered one bit with her playing randy old Mary Carson with such gusto!

  • @yardgoods Having a striaght actor playhing the role of a straght man would, of course, be much more interesting and believable. As good as Chamberlain was, he could not be entirely convincing. And yes, thank you for the bulletin but I am aware of Ms. Stanwyck's gender ambivalence. And yes, that is exactly what I am saying. DIsagree? Your prerogative as it is mine to have my own opinion. Have a nice day.

  • @TheSkylur44 Belated reply to your snotty response to my initial comment: Barbara Stanwyck's "gender ambivalence"? She wasn't a transsexual -- she was a woman who went to bed with men and other women. This did not effect her playing straight roles convincingly. Yes, we can agree to disagree. Everyone is entitled to her/his opinions. But some of us apparently have major issues which should be challenged when they are stated in an public forum such as YouTube. Now you have a nice day.

  • @yardgoods "

Snotty?" I DEEPLY apologize if that is what you thought, what you mistook for "snotty" was, in fact, sarcasm.I also never stated at any time that Ms. Stanwyck was transsexual, that is your term, not mine. And I understand her gender "ambivalence" did not AFFECT (not EFFECT) her ability to "play straight roles convincingly." As to "major issues" that is your "issue" my dear friend. Try a little more intelligence and far less hubris. Hvae a nice day.

  • @TheSkylur44 A disingenuous apology about sarcasm and a nasty remark about intelligence and hubris. Such passive/aggressiveness. I didn't say you called BS a transsexual, that was me being sarcastic. Gender ambivalence is related to transsexuals, not bi and gay men and women. The latter know what they want (or don't want) -- there's no ambiguity involved. I repeat that Chamberlain is/Stanwyck was a good actor. Their sexuality had no AFFECT on the roles they played in The Thornbirds.

  • @yardgoods Glad you got out your dictionary this time! As to your opinion, that is your opinion, as I stated, both are technically brillaint and you are the one who brought up Ms. Stanwyck, but again, both are good actors, obviously. MY opinion is that if they remake this movie I hope they cast a heterosexual actor to play Ralph. Get it now or is it too much information coming in all at once?

  • @TheSkylur44 If they remake The Thornbirds, why don't you see about getting a bit part playing a gender ambivalent dingo?

  • @yardgoods LOL; only if you apply for the part of the wild BOAR, or should I say BORE? You are so pathetic. What a loser.

  • So long before Meggie grew up, he was sexually frustrated. That blonde at the carnival probably wanted to sleep with him.

  • That was brazen to undress on a front porch like that! I guess it symbolizes him as a very sexual person beyond his vocation as a priest! To bad those horny maids did not see him .

  • @cherrypop1771 He did that on purpose to taunt Mary, after all, she taunted him 99 percent of the time.

  • OMG, did they show him nude on TV, I don't recall this scene. I bet the censors had a field day with this one. I was surprised he was pushing 50 when he made this film, I would have guessed early 40's at least. He ages well.

  • I know that is not real life and it's about romance, but ...... Why would a priest took off his clothes on the porch ... and then act so naturally when Mary came up closer and caressed him? .... hahahahaha :D

  • LOL I always thought she was taking a look at his (....), my opinion still hasn't changed...

  • That little girl Maggie looks and talks just like my little niece. Adorable!

  • The old lady rubbing up on the buck naked priest. Now that is one hellish way to treat a priest. You just don't do that to a priest! Shame on that old lady. The ladies just don't leave the priest alone. Even at my church. That is a shame on those so called catholic ladies. It is a cardinal sin!

  • @UnitedKorean O come on, this is fiction, its romance, its not real.

  • friedrichsalzmann@ Doesn't he. I thought he was in his early 30s. Can't blame Mary for loving the most beautiful man I've ever seen.

  • He was 49 at that time. He looks much younger

  • @friedrichsalzmann Wow, some people who are 35 look older then him at 49.

  • @ 5:26 poor little Meggie looks so terrified :(

  • 1:41-3:40 he's absolutely Gorgeous.

6:00-6:49 All through the movie their love is so strong, when she was little.. sweet and endearing, and grew into the most touching beautiful romance I've ever seen! It made me realize I've never loved someone in that way that i thought I did! The music gave this series a perfect mood, 'Meggie's theme' when he see's her grown up is so beautiful, the harmony, melody its expresses their feelings for each other without any words.

  • @tp4ever1950s Yes Maggy's love for Father Ralph and Ralph's love for her is very, very strong. But i think it is possible in true life to love someone in that way since childhood.Even if you don't have sex with him.It is just possible.I never loved someone in that way neither or perhaps so,but the person died when i was a teen.It was a teacher I had at primary school and i adored her.I also adored a religious lady but she died a cancer a few years ago and i cried all my tears out.So maybe...

  • I don't find Mary evil, just a lonely old woman whose life is near the end and hopelessly in love with Ralph knowing she can never have him.

  • @fisteberg That is true.

  • @TheSkylur44

meggie never really had him either.

  • @vbabe11111 she had him much more than Mary did and the only person who had him at all.

  • @TheSkylur44

Yeah she had him and how!!

  • @vbabe11111

She had him sexually and emotionally, but he was not committed to her. His main love was the church. Man tease!

  • @TheSkylur44 But it's not love in my opinion.IT's lust that's all.Mary only wants to have sex with the priest,a pure fantasy very ridicule for her age.She couldn't lubricate i guess. She just finds Ralph beautiful and is very frustrated as an old lady but it's nothing like love.It is lust and possession.

  • @fisteberg What difference does that make? :Love. lust, whatever, it is a sense of loss and despair for her.

  • I watched a clip of Richard Chamberlain being interviewed many years after the thorn birds, apparently (If memory serves me right) He was completely nude in the porch scene and barbara stanwyk actually mussed up her line because of it. It was funny because Chamberlain said his first thought at this was: "Oh...turned her on a bit!" LOL! :-D

  • @Aprann Which line did she mess up? The very first one she says when Barbara see's him?

  • @Aprann Never mind, I know what you're talking about(:

  • @Aprann: Actually Barbara was quite a dish in her prime.

  • @rayva1 I've heard of that but have yet to see her work...she did win an oscar though, correct? If so, I can see why! :-)

  • 5:19-5:26.... the same thing Meggie says, when she's an adult woman and Luckes wife...

Whatever she goes through; theres always an access between her and Ralph.

9:27...oh my god! :) She doesnt know, what she says...cute greenness! xD

  • @ballettgirl09

That was pretty brazen to tell Ralph loudly that she still loved him and wished he was Justine's dad. Poor Ralph, he's trying to be a devoted friend and she continues to lust for him. I wonder what the doctors and her friends thought if they heard them?
