Actually if you think about it, the old school Sonic games were on rails. Sonic wasn't in 3-D yet so he couldn't fall off the sides of the course. He could only fall off by things directly in front of him. That is why these games are being made like that. They are practically 2-D elements in a 3-D game.

It's technically not on rails because Sonic doesn't move unless you move him forward with the control stick. So basically think of it this way "Press up to become on rails". Not really much better than just plain on rails in my opinion.
