Aah, a comic book philosopher! (not that that's a bad thing. I still have the first 24 issues of Barry Smith Conans). You should keep making these videos. You have a great knack for comedy and the cerebral. The World needs both!
deserve to be elitist? HOw can you deserve to be elite? In essence everyone is the same. Race and gender become irrelevant. The problem with elitism is that the elitist wants to dominate and exploit the "inferior" ones for the most part. No one is inherently superior. Elitism is just having an exaggerated, dangerously huge ego.
That's an interesting idea. But I tend not to think that only some humans have a soul -- that sounds like a kind of elitism, perhaps genetics. I do think that some people are clearly more evolved than others. I believe we will take the reins from nature, and guide our own evolution. To become Transhuman. Perhaps as we are now to a single cell.
I do sometimes have a mystical streak, pantheism. But with a spectrum... the self-reflection of human awareness the most developed form of matter.
It's all life. I don't believe in dead matter. At a fundamental particle level it all resonates with the essence of life, from which more complicated (and ultimately consciousness) emerged. I don't think consciousness can emerge from human built artificial structures -- because the matter involved has been divorced from it's evolutionary context. It's losts it's essential continuous link with the fundamental vibratory life essence -- due to the fact that it has been cut up and rearranged.
I don't agree. I think consciousness is an emergent property of complex systems; neurons for the human brain. Very likely circuits or neuro nets could achieve the same given enough complexity. Admitedly, it would be a COMPLETELY different type or "species" of intelligence -- as it would have evolved from an entirely separate -- none biological -- sequence.
Matter is "dead," until it achieves consciousness through us -- universe observing itself.
It's been a while since I posted this and since then I've thought about it some more. I also agree with Gnothean -- life will no doubt beget life. But I think it is an important distinction to realise that it is LIFE that will be created. The life essence I see as an evolutionary link of emergent complexity that arises out of the fundamental particles and beyond to the 'essence of particles' -- that ultimately there is no 'solid smallest particle' rather pure energy.
So life will create new forms of life. But it will not be artificial, but true life. I don't think life can emerge from arrangements of circuitry. However the developing science of nano technology is different. I think when sciencists can create custom built cells and micro-organisms from the atom upwards then they are using the standing properties of atoms to artificially evolve new forms of life. It's like building on a foundation that is already in place.. the evolutionary context is crucial.
I'm not sure if I believe in the soul; I do metaphorically, at least. But I think humans and machines may meet eachother half way: the machines' intelligence will become more human, as I mentioned. And people will evolve as they are physically enhanced by biologically engineered new organs; so we may be more machine than human -- what is called Transhuman. I see this as a positive step, as we take control of our own evolution. We'll be more complex, physically and mentally... = Godlike?
I'm really interested in abstract thought as it applies to business situations, particularly the talent of projection and anticipation.
Many new businesses fail because their owners do not possess the crucial skill of anticipation and finding a method for developing this talent could mean the difference between failure and success in most enterprises.
Might consciousness have degrees of engagement which accounts for one mind being open to learning and another not?
Have you looked into NLP, Neuro Linguistic Programming?
Also, Transactional Analysis, created by Eric Berne, deals with the different ego-states which people have: Parent, Adult, and Child. Where they are coming from -- and you, too -- has a big effect on how your ideas are perceived.
We don't know who or what has consciousness or not. Do rocks think with infraconsciousness over aeons and aeons to grasp one moment?
We don't know whether we have a brain or whether it is just a representation within an illusion. We don't know how matter can produce magnetic fields, we just try to describe how it looked when it did it up to now.
We DO know who and what has consciousness. I can find nothing about "infraconsciousness;" If rocks can think, this is a revolutionary theory that would change everything we know -- there is no evidence.
Human consciousness is not completely understood, but we DO know we have a brain.
We DO know how matter produces magnetic fields. Relativity theory calls it electromagnetism. It is true that the Earth's magnetic field is not completely understood, but we essentially understand it.
No you don't even understand the subject. Consciousness is not a scientific problem but a purely philosophical one because you can't measure it. Yes you can measure brain activity. No you can' t measure consciousness. That's why "evidence" is generally out of the question. Philosophy has no evidence.
We don't know whether we have a brain or not because we don't know whether we have a body at all. Or whether a "we" exists. Start again with Descartes.
No, consciousness is BOTH a scientific AND philosphical problem. Philosophically we can't describe consiousness. You made a patently ridiculous claim re rocks -- now you're talking about pantheism, panentheism, panpsychism, or mysticism. I have no problem with that, but be honest about it. The references I found to infraconsciousness relate it to the human unconscious; also to the Qlippoth of the Kabbalah.
IMHO, the "brain in a jar" argument, etc., is silly; all evidence is we have a body.
Amazingly similar viewpoints to mine, although I haven't been as in depth. Perhaps I'll start making videos within this year. Perhaps I'll start without voice or with a cool voice synthesiser and text on a black background...
Hi, then you must be incredibly insightful, too! ^_^ Yes, you should definitely make videos. I'd bought my camera only for still photos, then discovered the movie and sound function -- about the same time I discovered YT. Don't be afraid to show your face and voice, but it's good to slowly test the waters with a simple vid. The synthesized voice and text also sounds cool.
If you want a scary take on AI, rent that movie, early mid 70s. A cult classic. Colossus is a supercomputer built to take control of all of our nukes for self defense. Turns out the Soviet Union has a supercomputer, too, Guardian. Guess what? The two decide to merge, and think THEY can run the planet a lot better than us! Eric Braeden as Professor Corbin, he was in the Titanic movie. Other than the computer having to fill a mountain, still cool.
I think the idea of AI consciousness is awe-inspiring. I'd suggest reading Ray Kurzweil's "The Age of Spiritual Machines." And the writings of Vernor Vinge, an SF writer and college teacher, writes essays.
They call it, "The Singularity" -- when Artificial Intelligence surpasses the human mind. There will be TWO intelligences on this planet.
For a scary/forboding SF take on it, rent the late 60's/early 70's movie, "Colossus: The Forbin Project."
This too has perplexed my mind for quite some time now. If consciousness is a byproduct of the inter connectivity and complexity of the human brain, then this can one day be reproduced. If consciousness is just a complex electrical neural net then what happens when you connect enough computers together? Sometimes i see the inter connectivity of the Internet as the closest model to the human brain and if this is true, can the Internet one day be conscious ?
I think an extremely complex computer could become conscious. It would be a self-awareness completely unlike ours... almost "alien."
In a discussion on Stickam, someone and I brought that up: the internet may eventually become conscious! Think about the vast amount of information, personal communications, thoughts and feelings, that are already flying across it as digital sparks... uh, oh, maybe it already is... Shhhh...! ^_^
I like the comment about re-thinking the concept of "spirit". I can see this working even for the most ardent materialist... something like, "spirit is the complex and abstract relationship between body and environment across time". This individual "relationship" would only be an arbitrary part of all the world's "relationships"....
To be honest, I haven't read the entire massive tome, but parts and discussions on it. It seems like a plausible theory. Terrence McKenna referred to it. And it can connect into schizophrenia.
