For exp, horses that fight the bit don't want to be held back, ears pricked, basically you can tell by body language.

She was a 3 yr old. And no they are improving the safety of horses. Surfaces such as polytrack and synthetic are way safer than dirt, that's why it's been replaced at some tracks(less breakdowns.) Tbs are breed to run. Have been for many many years.

Lastly, not all owners, trainers etc.. are in it for the $. For most people it's a way of life.

This is so sad. These horses are bred with running in their heart. The lashing that you see occurs only in training & race-day. Horses like this love to run. Take Seabiscuit for example. Jockey Red Pollard and Seabiscuit had such a strong bond and love for the sport that when it was time to run faster, Pollard merely whispered "Time to go," and Seabiscuit ran because that's what he loved. Many horses today mirror this behavior and horses, jockeys, and trainers genuinely love their horses.
