  • My high school Symphonic band played this also in 1982. We went to some state concert to play and we would of won except we were unknowingy disqualfiied because a intern put the same percussionist on stage to play that also was in the Concert band. I loved and have not heard it in years.

  • I think you over did it at some points and too loud when it should be quiet and it being loud caused some bad intonation problems and it doesnt make the crec. have the big impacts that it needs. and its kinda fast lol i cant really feel the emotion but its still a very good job.

  • Thank you so much for posting this . My highschool band played this 30 years ago and I have not heard it since. I just spent the past 6 minutes with goosebumps and tears streaming down my face. Thank you.

BTW, I played contra bass clarinet back in the day.

  • What an amazing comment. Thank you for sharing this.

  • No, thank you for posting your concert. I had been looking for this piece for years but had long ago forgotten the composer and had consigned it to the dustbin of my memory. This brought that memory flooding forward, making a powerful piece of music even more powerful. I am grateful for your gift.

  • Hello people: there are violins in this "band"...

  • bloody hell you guys have a contrabass clarinet? WANT

  • Wow this is a really really fast version of this. I've never heard it played at this tempo. Its kind of cool though.

  • It's a prayer. Are the bass drum and tympani even playing on this piece? They are the heartbeat.

  • yes, the timpani and bass drum were playing in this video. Unfortunately the camera didnt pick it up so well

  • me gusta mucho. our band is playing the exact same song for our spring concert next tuesday. when we first started learning this peice, our director actually played this video ot the whole band to see what it sounded like.. must say its a very intense peice. wish the sound quality would of been better...but non the less...i like it!

  • Wow, he played our video?! I'm so honoured to hear that, haha. I could have sent you a better quality video as well. Oh well, thanks a lot, and good luck!

  • its okay, this was was fine. if i can ill try to post the video of us playing the song at our concert.

everytime we play this song in class i swear it gives me goosebumps...especialy right at the big chord at 4:22 even though we play it like tripple forte and a lil bit longer than you guys. im so stoked to play it.

  • Are the notes throughout the song supposed to "clash" like they do

  • Of course. This is an incredibly dissonant piece.

  • Okay. makes sence

  • Just finished playing this at state.

    A powerful piece indeed.

  • What key is this piece in? It is a very awesome piece.

  • Cm/CM

  • Cool. I figured it was in a minor key of sorts.

  • Yep, and tonic major at the end.

  • I know a lot about music but what is a tonic major?

  • It's simply the same tonic note (e.g. C in this case), but in major key. For example, this piece is in C minor for a lot of the piece, but then ends in the key of C major (the tonic major of C minor).

  • we are playing this piece in band!

im playing the flute part. and even though it isnt that interesting as a part it sounds GREAT together. i love the sound of it! its so spooky and sad like.

  • I sight read this when I was a Senior in high school. Sadly, we didn't get to play it. I've been looking for a recording ever since. I played percussion in high school, and I got to read the timpani part for this ... and despite it being pretty much one note the entire time... I was shaking when we were done playing through it. Such a powerful part in such a gorgeous and sad song.

  • There is a recording of this on Toyko Kosei's "Lincolnshire Posy" album. I highly suggest you get it for the best of wind band works.

  • Not a bad performance. My HS band played this composition my freshman year (won't say how long ago that was). We slowed it down to about 80% of yur tempo, with notes to the adjudicators.

I'd really like to see this done by a corps from about 3:25 to the end, with all non-bass non-timp percussion switching to a horn, and about half the guard doing the same. The volume would be awesome.

  • I'm part of the THSS Band, still am. I can be seen in 4:10 with glasses. Best Damn band THSS has ever had.

  • W. Francis McBeth is the composer.

  • Our Wind Symphony just took this song up. Wow, it's amazing. I never thought I'd enjoy playing a piece at less than 60 BPM.

  • It's an amazing piece.

  • nice job... our school's symphonic band played this this year, and let me tell ya, its definitely not an easy task

  • No, definitely not. This piece is deceptively hard. Thanks for the comment.
