For what it is worth, the Celtic Tiger (Ireland) has today announced acceptance of a multi-billion euro bailout.
I hear "Latvia", "Latvia" on this vid.. which implies there is a lot of corruption within the govt. (Jan. 2009). It is my understanding that any political party that has a min of 5% can be elected ... which reminds me of the 1940 election when only one party (uSSr) could be elected (turn up or get shot) ie the russians are still at it.
Not really, no. The chants of "Latvia" was a symbolic sign that the protesters weren't motivated by anti-Latvian sentiment, but rather by willingness to change the current political culture, the political elite and the way the country was managed until then.
Political corruption wasn't one of the main concerns.
Also the 5% barrier has nothing to do with this. The *lack* of this 5% rule was one of the chief reasons why Latvia morphed into an authoritarian dictatorship in the 30's.
@vbyuer ..ok ... that puts quite a different angle on the interpretation. Most vids I've seen seem to be the russians protesting and screaming abuse; and Latvians (& other Baltic countries) showing their solidarity in response. From my distance I have little idea of the internal goings-on within the party's; but that a couple of party's are sympatheic to russia, hence some seemingly strange coalitions occur; and corruption seems to be a big issue. Thanks
This isn't one of those vids. The videos you're thinking of were "pro-something" rallies triggered by various events (like the Russian riots in Estonia), but this one is a genuine riot where all kind of ethnic/national groups took part, including Latvians.
This riot was caused purely by economic problems and it has nothing to do with some of the national issues.
@vbyuer .. I just did another google search on my surname .. another new article appeared ..."Alfred Valdmanis And The Politics of Survival" ,, a book. My father is mentioned in that book...part of Latvian resistance. I haven't read it all yet .. it's a quite long excerpt. I learnt from my mother recently, that during his hiding, he (and others) actually refuged in the basement of the building that was occupied by the gestapo. Who was ever going to look in there?
Well, first of all, I don't think we need any help. We're slowly, but surely climbing out of the ditch made by the Soviet Union.
Also - I don't think you should be making any assumptions about the situation in Latvia just by these videos. This is the only riot we've ever seen in the past 20 years. It's not that bad.
Judging by your Latvian, I'll assume that you're at least a second-generation immigrant in Australia. Do you owe anything to Latvia? I don't think so.
@vbyuer .... I was in Latvia a month ago for 3 weeks (only) Do I owe anytrhing to Latvia? ... the answer is Yes ... it is my heritage. It grieves me very much to see the physical mess that the krievs left behind. The country was once very rich and beautiful ... and now ... it appears very broken. 20 years is no time at all to try and fix it. I hope the new government will stand up against the oligarchs and use the state resources to help Latvia first, not themselves. Dievs sveti Latvija.
The only thing I dislike about the Latvian communities in exile (especially the older Latvian Americans), is that they seem to enjoy whining about how the Latvians in Latvia have screwed up "their" country.
Well, in that case, you're all gladly welcomed to migrate to Latvia and save us poor things from ourselves. Or, if you're not willing to come back, you're equally welcomed to refrain from expressing any judgmental opinions about Latvians in Latvia.
@vbyuer "refrain from expressing any judgmental opinions about Latvians in Latvia." I'm not making judgements ... I'm asking questions. I'll be there in august .. and see what I see. Then maybe .. some judgements .. but I think not .. probably a lot more questions.
@vbyuer dont say latvians because all they were russians they screwed up the country and now we just cant surive it is like for you (if u live in america) 150$ in a month and you have pay for everything food, waterd and ect and u actualy have only 20$ left for food and u have to surive with it a month and you need to work very hard so hold your fucking mouth
@40bcoots yea and thats just becose Lavian language is realy hard to lern but english is one of the moast easiest languages. i know it bcs im latvian two.
KAA VISPAAR VAR SHITAA IZZAGT VALSTI???
labi nedirs, ES nav nepieka vainigi.

But, yes, there are Kremlin-financed pro-Russian parties run almost exclusively by ethnic Russians in Latvia.
And, of course, corruption also exists, but it's a decreasing concern and not one of the major issues.
