I lived in Seattle for 3 years, 3 of the best years of my life; hard but worth it. I know most Seattlites hate grunge and the association with grunge (and I know this isn't grunge per se) but Eddie Vedder's voice brings me back home every time I hear it and makes me want to go back all the more. Thank you for posting this with all of the information too, it's facinating. Just had to get that off my chest.
@mayandjaydee We never hear about Dick Proenneke like we do McCandless. Proenneke achieved the Alaskan wilderness thing 30 years before McCandless tried it. Proenneke lived it with love of nature, mental/physical toughness, skill and even donated his cabin to the national parks for people to visit and learn more about his naturalist spirit. I can admire McCandless' idealism and love of nature but he was delusional and foolhardy.
Yesterday was my first time watching Into The Wild... i knew about this song before... but was this Eddies cover of this song before or made during that movie
Uploader: In the book the writer doesn't think Chris died by a poisonious plant. He said Chris lived on the wild potato for 2 months and consumed the seed successfully for 3 weeks straight previously - he had become familiar with it. He surmises - that Chris died by a lethal fungus that grows on forage in soggy climates. It rained hard for days - Chris goes out to forage in it He stores the seeds in a used ziploc bag - a perfect enviroment for Swainsonine.
This is a cover song. This was a song written by the band "Indio"
Eddie took this song and made it his own. The hairs on my arms stand up when I listen to this song. Eddie connects to this song and knocks it out of the park.
If Justin Beiber was to walk past me, i wouldnt even stop to piss on him if he was on fire. But if Eddie Vedder was to walk past me, people might mistake me for a screaming 8 year old girl......

@MakeNine32 I'm fairly certain it takes quite a few more than that to perform the basic acts of eating and breathing, so I'm going to go ahead and answer yes to your question. I would type more but, with you pin pointing how limited my intellect must be due to your shrewd analysis of a two sentence paragraph, I'm afraid I may drool all over myself or lick the nearest window uncontrollably. Therefore, I'm going to sit here and play with this rock and hope it doesn't overstimulate me.
@colchilibeck Love the original, but how good is this? What a soundtrack. Never ever will this leave my thoughts, Chris is my hero, in a funny kind of way. Wish i had the courage, or as some people say, foolishness. Even so idmire his conviction.
@colchilibeck i didnt know until now. but then again, all music is a cover of the 50's blues that spawned the evolution of the production of sound. so just because it's "obviously" a cover, doesn't mean a cover can't be entirely unique.
this book, this movie, this sound track changed my life. im not alone in my wishes and dreams and im not crazy after all. God bless you Alexander Supertramp. you saved my life.
i truly respect chris and he and i are a lot a like i spent 5 years hitchhiking canada and have spent 3 months in the wild aka no mans land ultimate freedom i made some travel videos check em out on my page
People need to respect others like Chris McCandless. The guy had enough balls to flip off materialistic society and live life the way he wanted to. People should learn from this, take life for what it really is.
Environmentalists and animal rights people argue over animal rights and their natural habitats. They say that theres no need anymore to hunt and fish because of the access we have now for food and shelter. But do they ever think about our natural habitat and environment. I don't really think so. God didn't intend for us to live with buisnesnes and economics and power. I think thats why Chris did what he did. Not only to escape the clutches of society, but to live the way God wanted us to.
@ActionRealmStudios i think your missing the entire point of what environmentalists believe in and are trying to do and people who campaign for animal rights. They are the ones who think about our environment and our 'natural habitat', thats what they are trying to do, for us to start caring about it and not drain our resources. I mean how can you even say that, that the environmentalists don't care about the environment... it's kinda in the name.
as was mentioned in the film, Chris didn't believe in God. As the old man in Arizona said: "You don't believe in God. You believe in a higher power and don't mind calling it God from time to time."
Chris was no member of a corrupt, business-minded orginization such as christianity (or any religion for that matter).
I think it's freaking hilarious that in our modern-day advanced society people still genuinely believe the entire universe was created by some omnipotent being, when logics make the idea even more proposterous than a fish climbing the Mt. Everest. The sheer amount of naïvity displayed by believers every single day is a testament to the fact that this so-called God is not perfect at all. Keep it up though, watching FamilyTV really makes me feel good about myself! Amen.
@guitarnublet In your comment, you come off as ignorant and smugly self-superior as any hardcore religious type I've ever talked to. Don't break your arm patting yourself on the back there champ.
@sphe1101 He WAS underprepared-no compass, map or backup plan for food, and not educated enuf about the environm he was trying to survive in as it changed on him. He had close calls before but always rec'd help from others. This time his luck ran out. How tragic to make a mistake that ends your life. Inspiring but sad.
Absolutely great song, but have to say it, as for the movie Chris being as smart and well educated (havard worthy) went into the environment totally unprepared and under-educated. Brought on his own fate.
Christopher Mcandless wasn't a hero but a pioneer of nature beauty and of primitive human living, side by side with nature. leaving the growing society behind to live like our ancestors
@gurubah I wouldn't go that far......he definitely did not live primitively. He often relied on human tools (ie knife, fishing gear) and on human kindness (like his many hitched rides) to be able to live out his dream. No, Chris McCandless was no primitive man, but rather an adventurer who set out to live his own life, free from the restraints of society that he perceived held American people back from their own potential. Hope this helped! :D
@thewho97: I agree. As much as I can't argue that McCandless was a bit of a dumbass, I totally admire him. He dreamed of living a simpler life, without the restraints and limitations of everyday life, and he did it. Granted, he probably should have done more research first... but hell, whaddya gonna do. He lived his dream, and yeah, it killed him... but you bet your ass he died a happy and fulfilled man.
@Tigerpuffer He certainly didn't have a ton of common sense, but he wasn't a dumbass. He was inspired and empowered by authors like Tolstoy, Thoreau, and Jack London, which are pretty hard to read, and graduated with high grades from Emory University. He was well-read in politics and philosophy......just not a great woodsman, though he did a good job considering how long he survived in Alaska with almost no supplies. But yes, he lived a more fulfilling life than most people do.
@thewho97: Dumbass in a figurative Brooklyn way ;) He was a truly inspired individual, and to have the thought process he did, in going against society and living out his dream. The fact that he was able to not only dream his dream, but fulfill it, is truly inspiring. I take my hat off to him.
@thewho97: Boo yah! The people that criticize him are those who will never get off their ass and live their dream. The people that follow him are those who will somee day achieve great things. I can only imagine McCandless' thoughts as he sat in the back of a box car, or stood in the bathroom of a crappy motel bathroom, with no idea of what tomorrow will bring...
Lol, no way! I like this music, I am big Eddie Vedder fan, but I couldn't help but notice all the funny comments about this guy, Chris Mcandless and I wanted to state my opinion. I studied his life and did not find anything inspirational about his life at all. And I really don't think it's wrong of me to state that
i think he was and is a hero in my opinion if people still look up to him and still talk about him then he is just as much a hero whether he saved anyone or not
Christopher Mcandless was not a hero, he was not even close. He was just a man that wanted to live his life to the fullest. He was no veteran from a war or a man who saved twelve children from a building thus he does not qualify to be a hero. However this does not mean we can't lead our lives by his example.
I've read many statements from different types of people, coming from deep in the NorthWest, regarding Chris as reckless.......but no matter, I can't help but love him, virtually unknown, and believe in his perspective. And thank you Eddie Vedder, voice of my early adolescents (even tho I'm female, heehee), for providing such a beautiful and important soundtrack for such an incredible story.
I have to agree with you. I can relate to this young man's earnest desire to 'find truth and meaning' in his life. We all should do the same as we each have our own individual purpose on earth. His was to leave this story to inspire us. <3
FOR EVERY GREAT INDIVIDUAL STORY THAT MAKES IT TO PRESS OR FILM, THERE ARE A MILLION UNTOLD STORIES OF GREATNESS. THERE ARE PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD LIVING INCREDIBLE, BUT ORDINARY LIFES. I THINK WE SOMETIMES CONFUSE TALENT WITH GREATNESS - FOR ME, AND THIS TRUELY IS A PERSONEL OPINION, GREATNESS IS NOT ONLY ABOUT MAKING A DIFFERENCE, BUT MAKING A DEFINATE, DEFINABLE AND LASTING DIFFERENCE FOR THE BETTER OF OTHERS. THERE IS GREATNESS IN MOST PEOPLE, BUT WE JUST DONT LIKE TELLING EACH OTHER.
Just one note: Thank God for people like your mother... I understand this must be hard on you, her family, but to think of the work she's doing... If only the rest of us were a bit more like her...
@sahlamari Thankyou very much. I'll pass that on to her! You probably know it's still sort of a warzone over their; very dangerous for a foreign woman, and yes, very stressful for all of us. She works for a Christian American organization called Mercy, a hospital ship. I'll be on Skype to her later and pass on your kind words. Perhaps a lot of these folks don't have kids, as I do, so don't appreciate how awful it must have been for the McCandless family. Kind words, thankyou :-)
@655Robert What's great about starving to death in the wilderness and putting your family through hell? I guess we're not reading from the same page; metaphorically speaking.
@655Robert I am sorry, I didn't quite understand your reply... What question were you referring to? A sheep? With all due respect my friend, I'm not a sheep if that's what you're insinuating. Books? Life, I meant. Maybe growing up poor I have different values, different philosophies.... I have my opinion, and respect yours. But please don't judge me for agreeing with others and not entirely with you. I have travelled the world, and try to look from all angles. Peace mate
@655Robert Great men still need knowledge to survive like that! I understand his contempt for what he saw as "empty materialism" in society, even though I'm very much working class. I'm sure it wasn't his plan to die like that... Sorry, I don't really see any positive message in what he did. Luck kept him alive that long, it was very, very foolish, and selfish. He's dead and his parents are still suffering
@655Robert And yes, books are awesome too, obviously that's how I learned to be literate, but experience and knowledge are required to survive like that. I know in my heart when I say it's a fact. I have in fact seen this very thing many times here. The end result is usually the same. Death. Which is never what they're looking for. We could talk about his ideals and philosophies for ever, but it was indeed his lack of knowledge/experience that cost him the ultimate price. That is my point.
This is great song...never saw the movie...have heard great things tho...but the my interpretation of the song is comparing a human relationship to a Godly one...like...in a way...he's saying that his woman in some kind of way is a religion to him...with lots of references to the bible...I think we've all been guilty of "worshiping" others n away...anyways...love love this song...n eddies voice reminds me of cash...
@Token528 I can kinda see what you mean but not quite dude. Too many songs/artists/albums ect to be note for note 100 percent unique a creative. Every song by anyone sounds like, a little if anything, a song from someone else. But again, I can see what you mean.
im glad i actually watched the film before coming onto this vid since you actualy tell everyone what happens at the end!!! great song though. one of my favourites on the by eddie although every single one is great!! =]
This is a beautiful soundtrack. I've seen the film at least six times. But if you truly want to get a clearer understanding of Christopher Johnson McCandless I suggest you read the book "Into The Wild" by Jon Krakauer.
This song reminds me of this time that I donated my life savings and got all mad at my parents for buying me this new car. So I started trampin it across the US and eventually made it to Alaska. I ended up starving to death and It was a real eye-opening experience for me. Would have never done if it it wasn't for Eddie Vedder though.
i think the government sux.i dont wanna be told how to live.what makes them think they can rule us?there not special.most of them were born into money and dont even know what a real days work is.if it was up to me id cap em all and live on my own mountain with everybody cool lol.but great song, eddie works wonders with words haha
Then who gets cussed out because the roads are full of potholes, no one gets social security or medicare or medicaid or any refunds on their income taxes or schools, or free emergency room service, etc. etc. Try paying it all yourself.
@ceb2633 I have and when I needed the services of social security for my disabilities, they turened me down several times over the past few years. as far as potholes goes they are filled in by your county tax dollars not federal. The feds don''t give a shit about you or me anymore. Wake up America and arm yourselfs for the reveloution that is around the corner.
listen to this in the country while camping. its just insane

Lol, no way! I like this music, I am big Eddie Vedder fan, but I couldn't help but notice all the funny comments about this guy, Chris Mcandless and I wanted to state my opinion. I studied his life and did not find anything inspirational about his life at all. And I really don't think it's wrong of me to state that

i think he was and is a hero in my opinion if people still look up to him and still talk about him then he is just as much a hero whether he saved anyone or not
bigcoopdaddy 1 year ago
Christopher Mcandless was not a hero, he was not even close. He was just a man that wanted to live his life to the fullest. He was no veteran from a war or a man who saved twelve children from a building thus he does not qualify to be a hero. However this does not mean we can't lead our lives by his example.
stevieman38 1 year ago
Christopher McCandless was not a hero. He did not save anybody

@leahgoins76
you don't have to save anybody to be an inspiration, besides i see you made an account just to bitch on Vadder songs

@francisdenw

If only the rest of us were a bit more like her...
sahlamari 1 year ago

@aussieblackfella1 If you have to ask that question you'll never know.
its cool to be a sheep.
655Robert 1 year ago
@655Robert I am sorry, I didn't quite understand your reply... What question were you referring to? A sheep? With all due respect my friend, I'm not a sheep if that's what you're insinuating. Books? Life, I meant. Maybe growing up poor I have different values, different philosophies.... I have my opinion, and respect yours. But please don't judge me for agreeing with others and not entirely with you. I have travelled the world, and try to look from all angles. Peace mate
aussieblackfella1 1 year ago
@655Robert Great men still need knowledge to survive like that! I understand his contempt for what he saw as "empty materialism" in society, even though I'm very much working class. I'm sure it wasn't his plan to die like that... Sorry, I don't really see any positive message in what he did. Luck kept him alive that long, it was very, very foolish, and selfish. He's dead and his parents are still suffering
aussieblackfella1 1 year ago
@aussieblackfella1 i agree to an extent books are nice i think he really didnt know what he wanted. i know he knew what he didnt want
655Robert 1 year ago
