Why don't we have some "fun" by you telling the American public where they can get the potassium iodide pills that you think, as America's Family Doctor, that we should all have???
She's a political mouthpiece spewing the most recent expediencies. It's ridiculous. It's nonsense, and worse, it's wrong and drops so much context to be laughable. Why can't you people see this? I've been obese. I was not fit nor healthy. I don't know a single obese person who got fat by eating healthy foods and exercising. Don't kid yourselves!
Yes, let's all listen to the unhealthy and obese doctor about becoming healthier. There's a reason why people are getting more unhealthy then ever before, and not just obesity, but illnesses. Nobody is meant to be obese. Ask yourself the question, what diet has humanity evolved to eat over millions of years, and what am I doing wrong?
I suggest you start with the 6-12 servings of grains the government suggests you eat to stay "healthy."
@LalasBlood You'd be surprised how fit one can become while still falling under the criteria of "obesity." Just because someone's fat doesn't automatically make them unhealthy. We're not meant to be sedentary and eat junk food, but just because those practices can lead to obesity doesn't mean that any and all cases of being fat is bad. There is no single default body size.
I suggest you stop pretending that what she's saying is false just so you can justify criminalizing her for being fat.
@LalasBlood Paleo diet follows human evolution. Govt's BS food pyramid has led to many health problems. Eat: meat (with fat), fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts, water (milk, dairy for those who can tolerate lactose).
@hughtub the most sense written in this comments section. You should be the surgeon general. Then all those cereal companies and corn producers would go bust. As a consequence they wouldn't be able to control our eating habits with cheap grains, addictive sugars and high salt content. Drat.
Dr. Benjamin, I want to thank you. It's so discouraging to hear the same old messages from the medical establishment, and then again from the well-meaning Obamas. The most recent studies show that losing more than 10-15% of your weight (at ANY weight) increases mortality and morbidity. But living large doesn't mean living badly! My worst problem as a fat woman? Not high blood pressure, not diabetes, not heart disease... but chronic cultural misinformation. Keep up the good work!
@klsabin The well meaning obamas? Dont you find it funny how this at woman is telling you it is ok to be at then you have michelle obama telling you how her own kids are fat and need to straighten themselves out? Its more nonsense coming from this regime and denial and ignorance coming from you
@klsabin please provide references for your claim of losing more than 10% body weight "increases mortality and morbidity" because common sense tells me otherwise along with a plethora of research; National Institute of Health is one source that says losing 10% can prevent or delay diseases associated with obesity. Also you might want to reconsider prioritizing what you should worry as a fat woman because chronic cultural misinformation will not kill you...high BP, heart disease, & diabetes will
@entropyfu I guess the SURGEON GENERAL OF THE UNITED STATES should have checked with random yahoos on youtube instead of relying on her medical education and decades of experience.
@entropyfu This is the problem. People like you equate FAT with UNHEALTHY. You need to do some research, because I think the SURGEON GENERAL may be a little more qualified to give their opinion, yes?
@entropyfu Rather it might be a better read to say "We can live a healthy and fit lifestyle at any size or any weight". Unspoken is the natural disappearance of the obesity in that man. Obesity isn't a problem in search of a cure. (But apathy sure is!)
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU Dr. Benjamin for having the courage to say that it's about fitness and healthy decisions and not just jumping on the weight-obsession bandwagon. I bet Michelle Obama isn't too thrilled about this, but then again, who's the one with the medical degree?
Awesome! Thank you, Dr. Benjamin! Health At Every Size is an achievable and reasonable objective. I also love that you noted the importance of having fun with your body, not doing things you hate in the name of exercise. There are so many fun and active things that people can do that there's no reason to torture yourself or do something you don't enjoy.
Wow. This is an important moment in the fat acceptance movement. To have a health professional saying what has been known for years but isn't the popular discourse is amazing.
This is a joke right?

She is saying though that being obese is unhealthy,- and at the end contradicting herself by saying we can all be healthy and fit .......
What she is actually saying is: Hey you obese americans with no willpower to change your life, be happy about yourself!
This is crap!
And she is even overweight herself. lol

"We can be healthy at any size or any weight"....Really? So a 400Lb man can be healthy?
No, sorry. You can't be healthy and obese. Obesity is a symptom of being unhealthy.

@entropyfu Yes, you definitely know more about health and size than the Surgeon General. OK then.
