By the way, very nice job on the pond and the Koi look great. I live in Hawaii and am on the process of building a Koi pond as well. Hopefully mine comes out looking as great as yours.
To all of the people out there that are leaving comments like "put turtles in the pond" or "is this without a UV filter" watch all of the videos on this filter build, he states that he has two red eared turtles and that he has a UV filter under the fake rock. If the world would pay just a little bit of attention we would all be better off.
Looks great! Nice job. One improvment I'd make is on your filter (garbage can) Put a bulkhead fitting on the side near the bottom and put a valve on the outside. Now you can open the valve and clean the sludge out of the bottom...kind of like a backwash.
make a smaller filter on top to trap the crap. first it will stop all that crap in your main filter it will save on the bigger filter service other than that its working fine
You are gona think I'm nuts but for even better water quality add a 1.5 cubic foot per min. air pump’s air to the bottom of the can through a 10 inch diameter air stone and put the bacterial media back in after a good cleaning of course.
Try it, you will be amazed then experiment with bacterial media, one of the best media I’ve found so far is plastic water bottle caps I give them a tumble in a concrete mixer with some sharp rocks and sand to add surface area. They work great .
The best way to use the plastic water bottle caps is in a moving bed filter and your set-up is ready to add air and media and a screen to keep the media out of the outlet.
Then you would have water more clear than glass.
The best part is .YOU NEVER HAVE TO CLEAN IT “EVER”
It does such a good job no solids are left after the process runs I have a large mech filter upstream from the moving bed filter and it now requires 1/4 the cleaning necessary before the moving bed filter install.
@mitsukai89 Hey bro I live in Canada and we have plastic water, soda, juice ect.... bottles It's the caps off these bottles that I'm talking about. If you look up Moving Bed Filter you will see the general idea.
To be fair an inexpensive product exists in the EU that kicks ass (Kaldnes K1) use it.
I'm planning to make and post some pond vids once the ice thaws its 850 mm thick at the present so its gona be a while.
I have the exact same bio-filter as yours. What I'd really like to know is, how much of that amazing clarity is UV affect? I'd love to see a month long trial w/o UV to see it's influence.
@WaroPhobe --I running a very similar filter. I am not using bio-ribbon though. And for the first month no uv light. After 4 days the pond was very clear. But then the sun took over and began to create more algae. The pond went to a green color. However, the heavy particulates are gone. I recently did some plumbing work and cleaned out 2 inches of much from the bottom of my filter that is only 7 weeks old. I have installed my uv light and it made a big change.
Good job. I have one like this but much smaller. I use a pad off of a floor buffer for my filter. To clean it I just pull it out and wash it with a water hose. My pond stays crystal clear just like yours.
very good, might i suggest putting the uv on the other side of the pond filter outlet, the uv will work better, and not get as much "dirty" water through it. it may get the pond even clearer being at that stage, since you have two outlets already, it would be easy to install it that way.
sick pond i was expecting a tiny crappy one
