I don't think it's being naive to say that having Obama in the White House changes the racial dynamics of America, plain and simple. It's basically the fulfillment of that long struggle, and I'm glad I'm alive to have seen it. For the first time in my entire life I can say that I'm not un-proud to be an American. I saw the "mutt" comment but didn't hear anything about a demand for an apology... was there one? There are a lot of people in society who don't get humor, and he might have to occasionally say "I apologize if it offended you" to select groups of people to ward off the torches and pitchforks... on the other hand, benign jokes like that can help humanize him for some who are reluctant to trust him, so he shouldn't waste time over-apologizing; he has too much to do in too little time as it is.

I hoped that the US people vote for Obama, and they did, and I think that was a good thing to do. I hope he brings the USA back on a good course, and that means, a policy which solves conflicts like Afghanistan or Iraq, stabilizies the wasted economy and tightens the bonds between the US and Europe. Personally I can not see how making a humorous comment about ones self can be construed as disrespectful. And really do not think there was a need for an apology. It is not the humor that is in question but more having to do with a person's position and where/when the comment is made. You would not want a teacher to make jokes about a kid's mama. Time & place mean more than we give credence.

I agree with you and I was surprised that he did it at a press conferrence. I like it but I wish it had been on one of those interview shows, like Barbara Walters or Ophra, Larry King, not in an important press conference but this is was a rather stupid question to ask in a press conferrence "what kind of dog are you buying?" although to be fair the Reagan comment came out of a very legit question.
