First skyscraper went up in Chicago in 1885, all skyscrapers since (however tall they may be) have been a response to this.
Same goes for oil drilling, home electricity, car culture, atomic weapons, and the internet.

The EU is NOT a single country therefore it is NOT a superpower. We still do have the largest economy(though in debt) and we still do have the most advadnced military. This video is flawed, free healthcare doesnt make you a superpower. GLOBAL INFLUENCE DOES! The US currently has well over 700 bases across the world, the biggest SAM defense system and well as a large nuclear stockpile. Saying we're not a superpower as of today is foolish. Post WW2 Russia was a SP and their people lived like shit.

The US is a corporation and as such you are an asset or a liability. You may believe you are a soulvern person but you are not. will america be able to defend itself? yes, in some states anyways. there is an estimated 1 firearm per citizen in the US, most citizens can buy a firarm, though some state and local goverments throw the second ammendment in the trash, and as for the big military, the fact that our military is everywhere actually puts us in more danger, 9/11 happened out of responce of US intervention, i just hope other americans will swollow there pride and think hay, our goverment could be wrong sometimes

Of course i do agree that the US should conserve its strength in the short term, Libya intervention is an extreme folly. I favour long term military goals and investment.

So all this talk of "interdependence" and "war is impossible because of trade" does not have any historical basis. A loss of trade may hurt, but will, seldom cripple, especially as war industry gears up. the only exception is when countries are cut off from vital resources, but they usually find a way, however tenuous to continue the fight.

Look at a chart of the federal budget on google images. Most of our money is being wasted on social security and medicare, which wont amount to any benifit in the long term but i wont get into that.

Above all, everyone has been using English as the global lingua franca for generations now. Cultural, scientific, educational prestige associated with English, as well as the extent of its spread and the global infrastructure for teaching people English, are light-years ahead of Mandarin. If Mandarin wants to replace English, China better be a superpower at least 3 times stronger than the US and stay there for decades at least.

Mandarin has too many regional varieties (which are sometimes very different), and is spoken as a national language only in China and Taiwan. English is spoken all across the world, especially India. And English is easier for Europeans and Latin Americans to learn than Mandarin.

Europe has always been and will always be the real superpower :D biggest importers, exporters, economy etc. Innovation is still strong in Europe look up large hadron collidor. Only thing Europe lacks is a single military but that is not really important at the moment.
