And although Pinson was a cynical hypocrite and an avaricious social climber, it's possible he may have been besotted with her initially, but clearly not as much as he told her. She does also ignore that nice librarian who would have been devoted to her... in my experience being in love is a total mystery, how on earth do people get together at all???
