Well, upon looking at it the other day, I noticed it had messages where you'd usually see serial numbers. Side One says Dumb Angel, Side Two says For Carl + Dennis, Side Three says Look, Listen, Vibrate, and Side Four says For Chuck + Larry. Its around the run-out grooves engraved in the record. If anyone else knew that, please let me know. If I'm the only one, I got dibs

@OropherThranduil Ha ha! I know what you mean! Pink Floyd's sets are just over the top and WAY poorly packaged. So many complaints on Amazon about the packaging. THIS BOX SET on the other hand is TOPS! (Except some people ended up getting warped vinyl in the box).
yeah, who needs 5 mixes on dvd AND blu ray of the same material, and i mean it#s not like you at least have mono and stereo mix like with some smile tracks.

FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS THE BOX SET, be sure to keep that track listing page that's attached to the back of the box! Just trim the bottom with a pair of scissors and stick it IN the box set because, believe me, you're gonna need it brother when you start listening to this thing!

@jakethesnake10000 it comes with so much stuff, its one of the most beautiful albums i've ever heard. and all the stuff it comes with is really priceless for me. it's really going to depend on how much you like their music and how interested you are in this story and what went into making this. inmy honest opinion. if they had released the first 19 songs of the first disk as the album 45 years ago, i have no doubt they would have topped anything up til that time, and truly changed music forever
@libertyhopeful18 i absolutely love brian wilson, i've been a massive fan for 5 or 6 years now. i was just asking as i've got dozens of bootlegs of the smile sessions, some better than others, and i was wondering if there is anything completely "new" on this release. i will be buying it eventually, regardless, because this is definitely essential, but if there is something i haven't heard then i need it right away. and i've heard quite a bit
@jakethesnake10000 i think they said that there's stuff that's never been heard. the CD's have a total of 144 tracks and its everything from saxophone takes on heroes and villains to vocal practice on wonderful. but like i said, they have said that there's stuff that never been heard. i honestly just had to have it and the packaging was a very big (at least 25% of the) reason why i got it all. i couldn't say if you definitely have or havent heard this all. but my guess is probably not.
@NEWGUY562 O.K., let me run this down for you. The album was NEVER finished and the track order was NEVER finalized. This 2011 "SMiLE" is going to follow the same track order as Brian's 2004 version of "SMiLE" because that's the only one that is COMPLETED. On this 2011 version, there will be a few songs that will not have any vocals (just a few, not many) because Brian and the band never got around to recording them. The first disc will be "SMiLE" as close to as finished as possible.
@MattHatter thanx 4 help :)..so how many songs are gonna be without vocals? i'm already so used 2 bwps so this is gonna be a bit different and not as complete but i'll deal with it.
@NEWGUY562 I'm not sure, but I'm guessing "Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock)," "Look (Song For Children)," and "I Love To Say DaDa" are all without vocals. Or at least without main verses. That's all I can guess off the top of my head.

@NEWGUY562 Oh yes. Brian's got promos up here on You Tube signing the very expensive "light up" boxes (those run about $600-$700). Regular 5-disc box set goes for about $130-$140 on Amazon.

I heard that on the Smile recordings they made comedy segments between tracks. Do these exist? Are they on there? Also, I heard a "clockwork" segment of Heroes of Villains somewhere before. Does that exist as a part of Smile?
You guys know what really sounds good on this new release? "I'm In Great Shape" has been re-sequenced to be a part of the album's first movement, preceding "Barnyard." The intense reverberation of the piano at the end of "I'm In Great Shape" perfectly sets up for the intro to "Barnyard." Much more so than how it precedes "I Wanna Be Around" on the '04 version. So it's "I'm In Great Shape / Barnyard / The Old Master Painter (You Are My Sunshine)" on the 2011 release.

They'll probably release a 5-CD box set without the double LP and the two 45s. This box set is gonna be for the real fanatics, and chances are, the real fanatics probably own record players and LPs.
@Vincecouk I agree fully with your - three other box sets I've been after have suffered the same fate: The Who Quadrophenia and Live at Leeds, and David Bowie's Station to Station. What happened to simply CD Box sets as opposed to these crazy sets with LPS that crank up the value.

@Vincecouk Cos you cant please EVERYONE all the time. They will always omit something that people will be unhappy with as well, so its better to have more than less, generally speaking. I personally, like to have vinyl AS WELL as they cds. Better to get more variety of product as value as they would probably charge the same without the vinyl for all the other stuff
Looks like I will be buying the 2 CD version. The box set is far too expensive at a price of £125.00 or just less than this. They should have released all the tracks on CD only at a cost of say £80.00 at the most and released the vinyl separate for the audiophile junkies. If King Crimson can have their first album release on 5 CD's plus a DVD for £43.00 plus postage, why cannot Capital or whoever owns the music do the same for this release?
Is this just the sessions? Not the complete arrangements from the 2004 Smile, only with the old recordings? If not, hasn't this been available for years? I mean, the purple chich version sounds fantastic, mostly.

@sirpaisley Yep, Brian DEFINITELY wanted the album to be in mono (though with the progressions made in the studio by '67, a stereo mix would have sounded fantastic for this album too and I think EVERYBODY agrees the chorus of "Cabin Essence" would be a great example).
This is very poorly done. There is a video of a box set, but the link takes you to a special page that does not include the box, but only an autographed light-up box, which sells for $700. This actual box set is selling on Amazon for $170.

Albums released on Capitol Records from 1965 to about 1967 usually had the sleeve heading "New Improved Full Dimensional Stereo." Now it looks like that's what it says on the top of the 2-LP set included in this box set. But I thought the album was going to be monaural only? Mmmmm.

T-2358. WE all know it should be ST-2358. Let's hope it's in stereo. But the last I heard Capitol cannot make G.V. in stereo. The backing track is available in stereo, but Bruce Johnston said in the late 70's Capitol did some house cleaning and suddenly the vocal tape disappeared. this is The Beach Boys Smile, that Brian Wilson version was basically just Brian and his touring band doing a solo cd.....wasnt the Long Lost Smile cd that fans were still wanting...so for me as a fan this will be the first true release of this classic

The 700 dollars price would be justified if it was an original copy of a SMiLE vinyl lp from 1967 which had actually been pressed, but methinks that Capitol is profiteering. Call me cynical...!

1. The recent reconstruction that you can find here under "Smile sessions teaser". That's the "completed album" version.
2. Heroes and Villains part 1 single mix (supposed to be the Good Vibrations box set version)
3. Heroes and Villains part 2 single mix (Based off 1967 notes).
4. Heroes and Villains stereo version (Slightly different from one as time is different).
5. Heroes and Villains sections (stereo version).

@Vincecouk Cos you cant please EVERYONE all the time. They will always omit something that people will be unhappy with as well, so its better to have more than less, generally speaking. I personally, like to have vinyl AS WELL as they cds. Better to get more variety of product as value as they would probably charge the same without the vinyl for all the other stuff

Looks like I will be buying the 2 CD version. The box set is far too expensive at a price of £125.00 or just less than this. They should have released all the tracks on CD only at a cost of say £80.00 at the most and released the vinyl separate for the audiophile junkies. If King Crimson can have their first album release on 5 CD's plus a DVD for £43.00 plus postage, why cannot Capital or whoever owns the music do the same for this release?

Is this just the sessions? Not the complete arrangements from the 2004 Smile, only with the old recordings? If not, hasn't this been available for years? I mean, the purple chich version sounds fantastic, mostly.

@sirpaisley Yep, Brian DEFINITELY wanted the album to be in mono (though with the progressions made in the studio by '67, a stereo mix would have sounded fantastic for this album too and I think EVERYBODY agrees the chorus of "Cabin Essence" would be a great example).

This is very poorly done. There is a video of a box set, but the link takes you to a special page that does not include the box, but only an autographed light-up box, which sells for $700. This actual box set is selling on Amazon for $170.
They need to fix this, as people will be misled.

Albums released on Capitol Records from 1965 to about 1967 usually had the sleeve heading "New Improved Full Dimensional Stereo." Now it looks like that's what it says on the top of the 2-LP set included in this box set. But I thought the album was going to be monaural only? Mmmmm.

@MattHatter Here is a real blogger. It says Full Dimensional Stereo, but the catalog number on the sleeve is
T-2358. WE all know it should be ST-2358. Let's hope it's in stereo. But the last I heard Capitol cannot make G.V. in stereo. The backing track is available in stereo, but Bruce Johnston said in the late 70's Capitol did some house cleaning and suddenly the vocal tape disappeared. this is The Beach Boys Smile, that Brian Wilson version was basically just Brian and his touring band doing a solo cd.....wasnt the Long Lost Smile cd that fans were still wanting...so for me as a fan this will be the first true release of this classic

The 700 dollars price would be justified if it was an original copy of a SMiLE vinyl lp from 1967 which had actually been pressed, but methinks that Capitol is profiteering. Call me cynical...!

All I'm seeing are 4 versions on my phone. Surely there's got to be a more affordable option between $100 & $700. I don't need light up boxes, but I want the 5 CD's. The extras look cool, but remember the MUSIC is the focus and why we're even interested.
