@xMika03 The motion jpeg format is actually just a series of jpg images, very different from the more traditional video encoding method which the avchd lite format uses. The filesize of the mjpeg format is determined by the compression of those images.
@xMika03 Also the bitrate is another important factor. Example: if you record 1 minute of video with this camera in 720p avchd lite format (h264/avc) which uses a bitrate for the video part around 14.5 mbps, the filesize is around 100mb. But if you record 1 minute with a canon ixus camera in 720p (h264/avc), the bitrate is higher (less compressed) at around 22.9 mbps for the video part, resulting in a filesize around 170 mb.
@xMika03 Oh and another thing. The sound part of the mjpeg stream/file is not compressed, while it is in the avchd lite format. This will also influence the file size.
@xMika03 I highly recommend that you search for and download the free program called mediainfo (just google it). With this program you can rightclick those video clips in explorer and select mediainfo which will present you with detailed info about how the clips are compressed.
With mjpeg, each picture is self packed. That means that you may get in picture 10 some details that the compactor has skiped in picture 9. This makes the films look more detailed but also less "stable" when you film a steady scene with some big thing moving in a corner. Comparing resolution or frame rates with a youtube sample is also tricky (films somehow are downsampled). Great job anyway !
This camera uses an autofocus technique called contrast detection while you record video clips. It's silent, but slow and not always perfect but depends on the subject and light conditions. Most other cameras does not support autofocus after recording has started at all, so it is certanly better than nothing.
AVC is become the new format standard for digital HD video image capturing. Most video editors support AVC formatting. I only hope that this "AVCHD lite" is in the standard format, not some lame crap version of the AVC professional standard.
i bought this camera. it is amazing! increadible video! increadible picture quality..... I think AVCHD Is better than MJPEG.... it is 720p. 60fps.... MJPEG is 30fps
Choosing MJPEG for this clip was just for the sake of testing it. I wouldn't know if it offers better quality. But there is certainly a difference in the filesize. 1 min of MJPEG is 234MB and 1 min of AVCHD Lite is 114MB.
is this footage hand held or was a tripod used?

@xMika03 You might wanna search for more detailed information via google or look both formats up in wikipedia to read more about them.

Just bought this camera, and took motion jpeg, but it will not open with the panasonic photo fun studio 3.0 Hd version, what am I doing wrong??
Ive also tried my Pinnacle program and it will not work either.

I was wondering why it looked so bad compared to other vids. You can upload to youtube using AVCHD. It looks so much better than this.
Anyway, I ordered this camera even though I bought a new camera one year ago. I love the 720P, in stereo. Fits my needs.

Why Mjpeg? Does it offer better detail? S few AVCHD videos i ve seen have really thick edges for 720p.

Thanks for the answer.
From what i ve seen mjpeg are a bit more detailed!

I agree with that...

Actually, in AVCHD "L" mode it works out to only 1MB/sec. One minute equals about 60MB.
