@EyeMdone No jet packs or rockets are used. What does it is the flaps, extended so far that it gets behind the engine exhaust and directs the thrust downward creating additional lift.
@EyeMdone Yet this video, and many others, show it being done. I've seen this take-off at various air shows in SoCal over the last 4 years. Same pilot btw, Lt. Col. Timothy Harris out of March ARB. It's a demonstration of what it could do if it had to, not something a part of normal operations.
They designed the C-17 to carry cargo up to 10,000 tons, what they didntknow, was that they created a monster that could almost manuver like a fighter jet

@bsaponas Wrong my friend. The airplane is designed to take off on runways 3,500 foot long WITH cargo and still be able to climb at a high rate. I was a crew member on that demonstration.
C-17 demonstrating one reason why she is the world's best airlifter! This is one truly awesome airplane,.. not to mention a very beautiful aircraft at that.
