This tune...of all the infinite possibilities of music...it just blows my mind that people r capable of such things. I'd really appreciate u checking out some of my stuff. Maybe leave me some pointers or something. And what r your thoughts on agile 8 strings? ...and how,if possible, could I get lessons from u? Thanks Fred.
@UglyScukuggly Cheers, mate. I teach via Skype or Bandhappy, so yes it is possible to have lessons with me. :) As for Agiles, while not exactly high end guitars by any stretch of the imagination, I find them great bang for the buck in the US. :)
@UglyScukuggly Of all my 8's, and they're a quite a few, only 2 I use aren't Jaden Rose guitars. I think that, with 2 fanned fret 8's and 3 Spiders like the one above, it does speak for itself. ;)
This song is phenomenal. So sick...and tight! I don't know how you do it Houdini, but I'd love to learn anything and everything I can from you. Lesson videos? ...and whats some good practice material I should check out.
@UglyScukuggly Thanks, mate. I teach via Skype and Bandhappy. I may put together a lesson video eventually, but the requests are so diverse it's very hard to do a nice encompassing series.
Man fred, I really wanna learn the groove at 1:40, one of my favorite things of all time. When I get my 8 string I will try to watch this vid and learn it. so tasty.
@xom400 best way is with microphones, usb recording devices only take us so far so best bet is to get say a Shure SM57 great metal microphone used by everyone from Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) or say what they used on Nevermore and dead heart in a dead world.
@JYZProductions It is, but with it comes the awareness of how to mic things up, guarantee a proper recording environment and the like. While not 100% there yet, I do feel impulses are a fantastic tool to work with and allow for excellent results (still doesn't replace air moving viciously, of course). :)
@bishopsade Don't mind at all, dude. Used a Mesa Mark IIC+ model, Graphic EQ engaged, with the gain set low and and TS boosting the preamp, master set high. 87 condenser mic model with a 4x12" using V30's. If you mean the intro, prior to the drums, it's just a dimed plexi with a rat as a booster and the good old Greenback fitted cab, using the 121 mic, off-axis IIRC. Thanks for the kind words. :)
@An1m3Watch3r Honestly, unless you are a tone purist, you can use stuff like the Eleven Rack, which do have a Mark IIC+ model in them - that's what I used here, so I could replicate my Mesa amp without exploding my ears recording the playthrough at home. :-P
As for the variations Mesa does, you can pretty much get the same tones transversally, and the most it takes is a few bias / tube tweaks. Just make sure that you get the head version (this amp REALLY likes full bodied cabs) with graphic EQ.
Fred, I'm sorry that I'm annoying you the whole day, but I need to ask one of the questions you probably hate and get asked a lot, but how do you make your drumtracks?? You don't play the drums for your tracks here, do you?
@swisseragonplayer I "play" the drums on a MIDI keyboard, using EZ drummer loops for some stuff, and I rely on DFH or Metalheads as far as virtual drumkits are concerned. :)
@GibsonGuitarsForLife I never did bother to tab this, mate. I do have an explanation of what I'm doing in part 2 of the clinic I had at Monkeyfest, so do stay tuned for that. :)
Dude, thank god you have started to make more songs now, when i first checked you out couple of years ago you only had that silly Flight of the Bumblebee video on myspace :D
This sounds mighty good, are releasing album anytime soon?
@Justasssu A couple years ago I had 2 Ethereal albums out and was touring with the band - I never got why a semi-drunk FotB that I played for shits and giggles at the time got so much attention! Haha! Album should be out in 2 to 3 months, by the way! Thanks for yout interest. :)
@rockwizclown I do have lessons via skype, mate but, depending on your current skill level (which I am unaware of), you might consider having a local tutor coaching you, perhaps? :)
@bingeandgrab92 Haha! In spite of the not so common embelishments in some chords, this is still the good old minor I - VII - III - VI, which has been around for ages. Another good example of it is Adam Lambert's "What Do You Want From Me". Hahah! :D
@FredtheShred Haha ya I've heard a few classical tunes that use a very similar progression. My ear just automatically anticipates hearing the Coldplay tune. Great playing though man!
:O! LOVE every second of it!! remainds me one of my favorite groups! soilwork!!.. thats the way to go fred!! good energy to you from colombia my friend! :)
you're the only person ive heard yet to make an 8 string sound musical, let alone use one to add tuning/layer dynamics to your bridges, choruses, verses, and still track a solo on it without missing a beat (literally). says alot for your talent dude, happy NGD :D
@broadcast666this this was just the Eleven Rack, as it was the unit I used to record the track originally ( and I couldn't be arsed to assemble the Axe FX's rack after the gig... haha). :)
