  • This tune...of all the infinite possibilities of music...it just blows my mind that people r capable of such things. I'd really appreciate u checking out some of my stuff. Maybe leave me some pointers or something. And what r your thoughts on agile 8 strings? ...and how,if possible, could I get lessons from u? Thanks Fred.

  • @UglyScukuggly Cheers, mate. I teach via Skype or Bandhappy, so yes it is possible to have lessons with me. :) As for Agiles, while not exactly high end guitars by any stretch of the imagination, I find them great bang for the buck in the US. :)

  • Favorite 8 string guitar and why...go.

  • @UglyScukuggly Of all my 8's, and they're a quite a few, only 2 I use aren't Jaden Rose guitars. I think that, with 2 fanned fret 8's and 3 Spiders like the one above, it does speak for itself. ;)

  • This song is phenomenal. So sick...and tight! I don't know how you do it Houdini, but I'd love to learn anything and everything I can from you. Lesson videos? ...and whats some good practice material I should check out.

  • @UglyScukuggly Thanks, mate. I teach via Skype and Bandhappy. I may put together a lesson video eventually, but the requests are so diverse it's very hard to do a nice encompassing series.

  • 1:43 soo sooo tasty.

  • Man fred, I really wanna learn the groove at 1:40, one of my favorite things of all time. When I get my 8 string I will try to watch this vid and learn it. so tasty.

  • This is one of the best things ive heard in so long, your fucking sick dude

  • @Reeceninja Well thank you so much, mate! :)

  • @1:41-1:46 ish, are you rolling into slides? if so, that's pretty badass dude. It seems/sounds like it @720p but i could be wrong i guess

  • @80HGuitar I am, yes - I slide from in between thirds and roots in the chords to give a slippery effect of sorts. :)

  • Tuning?

  • @Met749 Standard tuning, i.e. E-B-G-D-A-E-B-F#, low to high of course.

  • @Met749 high to low, i mean. D'oh. Mental note: do not post in between studio takes in the morning. Sorry dude!

  • @FredtheShred Thank you very much! The song is amazing! :)

  • @Met749 Thank you, dude! :)

  • @xom400 Guitar -> cable -> Eleven Rack. That's it. :)

  • how do u record ur guitars ?

  • @xom400 best way is with microphones, usb recording devices only take us so far so best bet is to get say a Shure SM57 great metal microphone used by everyone from Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) or say what they used on Nevermore and dead heart in a dead world.

  • @JYZProductions It is, but with it comes the awareness of how to mic things up, guarantee a proper recording environment and the like. While not 100% there yet, I do feel impulses are a fantastic tool to work with and allow for excellent results (still doesn't replace air moving viciously, of course). :)

  • muito bom mesmo!

gostei mesmo do estilo! almost djent na minha opiniao

  • awesome

  • i hope you do great! this is just amazing!

  • @Miteour17 Thanks, mate!

  • Damn you know some fucking theory:))

  • fuck yeah! i love this song

    great, dude

  • @M1ndful Thanks, man! :)

  • Hearing that chord progression, I was expecting someone to bust out singing "Just a small town girl!" XD

  • I wanna learn this song! Are you in standard 8 string tuning?

  • @RustyR Yes, I am. Thanks for your interest, mate!

  • Great song, great playing. Mind me asking what amp/cab/mic you used in the 11r for that initial lead tone? That tone is awesome!

  • @bishopsade Don't mind at all, dude. Used a Mesa Mark IIC+ model, Graphic EQ engaged, with the gain set low and and TS boosting the preamp, master set high. 87 condenser mic model with a 4x12" using V30's. If you mean the intro, prior to the drums, it's just a dimed plexi with a rat as a booster and the good old Greenback fitted cab, using the 121 mic, off-axis IIRC. Thanks for the kind words. :)

  • @FredtheShred

Aweasome song, excellent tone, i want to buy a mark IIc+ what model should I buy ,because there are some modifications and variants of mark IIc+.

  • @An1m3Watch3r Honestly, unless you are a tone purist, you can use stuff like the Eleven Rack, which do have a Mark IIC+ model in them - that's what I used here, so I could replicate my Mesa amp without exploding my ears recording the playthrough at home. :-P

As for the variations Mesa does, you can pretty much get the same tones transversally, and the most it takes is a few bias / tube tweaks. Just make sure that you get the head version (this amp REALLY likes full bodied cabs) with graphic EQ.

  • aha. thought i wouldnt catch that mistake you made from 1:09-1:40 where you forgot to play the riff another 650 times

  • @80HGuitar Yes! Minimal repetitive is the way! I'll just edit out the rest of the song and loop this riff for 5 minutes! :P

  • Great playing dude

  • Fred, I'm sorry that I'm annoying you the whole day, but I need to ask one of the questions you probably hate and get asked a lot, but how do you make your drumtracks?? You don't play the drums for your tracks here, do you?

  • @swisseragonplayer I "play" the drums on a MIDI keyboard, using EZ drummer loops for some stuff, and I rely on DFH or Metalheads as far as virtual drumkits are concerned. :)

  • @FredtheShred thanks a LOT for the quick answer :D

  • Cool Beard! XD

  • fred, would you be able to make a tab for the riff from 36 seconds onwards? thanks

  • @GibsonGuitarsForLife I never did bother to tab this, mate. I do have an explanation of what I'm doing in part 2 of the clinic I had at Monkeyfest, so do stay tuned for that. :)

  • Good job! Very great!!)

  • Dude, thank god you have started to make more songs now, when i first checked you out couple of years ago you only had that silly Flight of the Bumblebee video on myspace :D

This sounds mighty good, are releasing album anytime soon?

  • @Justasssu A couple years ago I had 2 Ethereal albums out and was touring with the band - I never got why a semi-drunk FotB that I played for shits and giggles at the time got so much attention! Haha! Album should be out in 2 to 3 months, by the way! Thanks for yout interest. :)

  • Very very nice track man.. i love it..

  • Super meeting you again man! We need to talk more!

  • Whoa, you really managed to blend melody and heavy riffage, great tune ! Outstanding talent ...

  • Phenomenal, awesome mix and sweet chorus!

  • you need to tutor me on guitar please D:

  • @rockwizclown I do have lessons via skype, mate but, depending on your current skill level (which I am unaware of), you might consider having a local tutor coaching you, perhaps? :)

  • @FredtheShred I've been playing for 4 years now. 0.o I would love it if we could skype teach lol

  • Heavy instrumental version of Coldplay's "The Scientist"? Haha

  • @bingeandgrab92 Haha! In spite of the not so common embelishments in some chords, this is still the good old minor I - VII - III - VI, which has been around for ages. Another good example of it is Adam Lambert's "What Do You Want From Me". Hahah! :D

  • @FredtheShred Haha ya I've heard a few classical tunes that use a very similar progression. My ear just automatically anticipates hearing the Coldplay tune. Great playing though man!

  • Thanks again for all the kind words - most appreciated. :)

  • Loved that, it's awesome to see someone use the full range of an 8 string.

  • the chin of win impresses again!

    great tune buddy

  • very fucking awesome brutal axe and ton !!!!!!!!! keep rocking!!!

  • so far i haven´t seen anyone using an 8-string in that kind of melodic way. awesome.

  • Really nice guitar (and guitars in the back) and great playing as always! Which V-Picks do you use?

  • @MyxHarnett I use personalized 4.1mm Snakes and medium pointy picks. :)

  • good luck on the gig fred!

  • @TempHolder Cheers, mate! :)

  • Whats that pile of sex behind you?

  • @threex4 Jaden Rose "The Spaltiverse", Jaden Rose S2 7-string #1, Strandberg #6 (all 7's so far) and a '91 Frank Gambale sig. :)

  • Very nice !! good job man !!

  • awesome fred, do you still have the red spider?

  • @chubbymosher700 Of course! That guitar is sacred! It's on my lap being prepared for tonight's gig, in fact! :)

  • SOOO LOOOWW.

    Sounds fucking monstrous man.

  • What. A. Tune!

  • :) epic!

  • I think we have another Tosin rising up. This is absolutely phenomenal, Fred... as usual and as expected from you.

Question: Are the specs on this Spider different from the one you got previously?

  • porn

  • Incredible big man! My favourite of yours fella.

'Where I'll be playing with such monsters as Guthrie Govan, Andy James and ADAM IRONSIDE!!' :p

  • @Adji87 Correction: Guthrie Govan, Andy James and humiliating ADAM IRONSIDE with my shredic powers! :P :P :P I kid, I kid! Thanks, dude! :)

  • @FredtheShred Haha you know its true, thats the worrying thing!

  • Thanks for all the kind words, guys! :)

  • Superfantastic!

  • Impressed with the distinct lack of bottom end flubber, whilst retaining a warmer/rounded top end. Cool guitar indeed :)

  • Just FUCKING loved it

  • God I love that riff.

You know the one i'm talking about

  • Damnit fred, awesome playing and guitar!

  • :O! LOVE every second of it!! remainds me one of my favorite groups! soilwork!!.. thats the way to go fred!! good energy to you from colombia my friend! :)

  • @mrhankey87 Cheers, man! How's your stuff coming along? I want moar!

  • @FredtheShred we're tracking drumz! It's sounding brüt, I'll surely send you something very soon ;)

  • @mrhankey87 Awesome! Here's waiting! :)

  • you're the only person ive heard yet to make an 8 string sound musical, let alone use one to add tuning/layer dynamics to your bridges, choruses, verses, and still track a solo on it without missing a beat (literally). says alot for your talent dude, happy NGD :D

  • @evhgl87 Thanks so much, dude! You're too kind! :)

  • Nice looking axe!! Growly ass tone too. I bet you can grow a really awesome beard. That stubble looks painted on!

  • @broadcast666this haha! My beard is really thick and hard, so it's almost as if I paint my face grey due to the black and white hair in it! :D

  • @FredtheShred HAHA lucky guy. What are you running through? Its got balls but isnt stupid gained out, i like it.

  • @broadcast666this this was just the Eleven Rack, as it was the unit I used to record the track originally ( and I couldn't be arsed to assemble the Axe FX's rack after the gig... haha). :)

  • brill :D

  • Excellent playing Mr fred your track just keep getting better and better awesome indeed
