I tried this method and waited 15 minutes but the shadow ended up pointing more North than East. I waited another five minutes and still no east. I can't see how the shadow would point east unless the sun was west of the stick. Even with the other stick method a start and finish point are marked to indicated W and E the shadow doesnt point the direction the tip of the shadow moves west to east because the sun moves east to west. I believe there is a flaw in your method.
no, that's the shadow stick method, this is called the shadowless method since you start with no shadow, this is quicker then the shadow method, but is a little less accurate.
at the speed he's doing it, it's basically a reference of the area between SW and NW , it'll get you to the shore or to a large city, but not accurate enough to use on a map.
no, since number one, this is a crude way to find direction, and it's only good to tell general direction, like between North west and South west, but not due West unless you work on it for an hour and measure it every 15 minutes or so.
solar clocks are more permanently placed so they are accurate, you'd need to work on it for a while.
Could I obtain the same results by simply placing the stick in the sand (not pointing toward the sun). Mark it's begin point and then let about 20 - 30min. elapse, and then mark the point of the shadow again? Wouldn't the starting mark be West and the end shadow mark East? Thanks - and thanks for posting. I am hoping to learn more about the basics of navigation and survival.
Oeer missus. Titter ye not. T'is quite a good idea -providing the fucking Sun is visible in the sky! What does one day if the Sun is not visible in the sky? Answer that genius boy! Oh I know! I HAND YOU THE COMPASS I TOLD YOU I HAD LOST! Ok....no need to get nasty. Can't you take a joke?
I showed my children how to make their own compass with a crewel needle scratched on a magnet, then laying that needle on a floating bit of cork or foam -I used a bottle cap at the time- in a free-floating dish of water. ^_^

This is not a reliable method because the results are different depending whether it is morning, afternoon, time of the year, and latitude.

Depending if its morning or the afternoon..or you will be walking to the oposit direction ! LOL

this will be opposite in the southern hemisphere
flamedrag18 2 years ago
i thought you figure out the North first when the shadow is the shortest in the noon!

I dont get it prasant, how did you know that was East?
Ssshahin 2 years ago
cause the sun is always moving to the west, so the shadow will move in the opposite direction, east.
but this only works in the northern hemisphere, you need to reverse the north and south when in the southern hemisphere.

does this work in the afternoon/southern hemiphere/if you can't accurately measure 15 minutes (no watch) etc etc?

Good video. Also, if the sun is past overhead (ie. in the "west" part of the sky), the shadow will then start to point east.

Hello there,
Thank you, this was fun. ^_^
I showed my children how to make their own compass with a crewel needle scratched on a magnet, then laying that needle on a floating bit of cork or foam -I used a bottle cap at the time- in a free-floating dish of water. ^_^
