I am getting a 125gallon from a friend and it has a crack in the glass. I am thinking buying a piece of Plexiglas and and using silicon to cover the crack. The Plexiglas will be much larger than the crack. Do you think it will work?
I bought Green Scribbled Discus from a local breeder for ten dollars a piece. They are about 2 inches each and eat anything. I found the guy on craigslist in florence Kentucky.
Awsome, im getting a 5ft ank, about 140 gal, im gonna have 6-8 discus plus otos or bristlenoses and a herd of corys, lol + a big school of cardnals. That is the food im going to get! What else do you feed them besides that, is that food + mysis shrimp + brine shrimp + bloodworms ok?
lol @ cory's, I tend to feed a mix, mostly flake, with supplemental "treats" once in a while- if it's live, just make sure its fresh and from a good, "clean" source- go for frozen if you are unsure.
I might use live brine shrimp but i will stay away from the live worms as i dont want to risk it especially with such gorgeous and valluable fish. Im just gonna use frozen and pellets. Have you ever tried hikari's discus food? Is it better than this one?
All thoes foods are great but i have had discus for many years and for that time i have fed them on flake and beef heart. basically if you buy a cows heart from your local butcher, cut off all the good flesh, cut away all the tough grissle of the arteries and veins. put the flesh in a blender untill it is well pulped. put it into a shallow tin, level it into a thin layer, freeze it and you can then give it them. they love it. Just be sure not to put too much in, only enough so they eat it all.
they don't get to large, and I would introduce the discus first, so they get accostomed to the tank alone, and establish territories, and feel comfortable. Then introduce them slowly- a huge shoal could crash your tank if it is not that mature. So 6-8 at a time, until you have your desired number. Good Luck! Just ask if you have any questions ;)
It could definitely work. What type of tetras do you plan on using? I recommend cardinals, but there are others that love the high temps as well. Just be sure
plants, driftwood, etc. Water changes every week or so. Water: 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 10-20 ppm of nitrates, 6.7 ph, med hardness, and the tank is 86 degrees. I feed Tetramin pellets (as seen in the film). Feel free to ask any questions at all.
It is a 125 gallon tank with an XP3 filter, 2 300 watt heaters, One luft air pump with 4" diffuser, A 9 watt UV light sterilizer, one double bulb normal output flourescent light fixture, one 4 bulb compact flourescent light fixture, 8 or ten bags of eco-complete with flourite (If I do it again, I would only use eco- complete, and only 6-8 bags ;),
really did u try the pellets or the flake because i have and 75 gallon tank with parrot chilids and a 55 gallon tank with humphead chilids and they love the flake omega one stuff and i throw in some blood worms and krill here and there for snack. But i got a 72 gallon tank and i'm planning to discus in it so do u have any pointers.
Pellets- I will pick some of the flakes up, and see if they like 'em ;)
Hmm... as for pointers- keep only discus, use plants, use a large filter, not too much flow, do WATER CHANGES, and stock lightly. Oh, and keep @ 83-86* F. See the other comments for more tips.. HTH ;)
i ues 2 feed mine with krill and bloodworms but started buying tecso fish chicken and prawns, then i freeze it,and cut it up in lumps, look how big mine r,they love it its cheaper and lasts much longer, try it
hey i dunno what this is called or what it is but i have this white slimey stuff that sticks everwhere in my fish tank and two of my angels died my amazon didnt make it but i got a new one thats doing really good without the leaf zone but this white stuff isnt going away its been in my tank since before i commented yu 6 days ago n it get really cauhgt up in my filter,n driftwood do yu know what this is? if so can yu tell me how to get rid of it? its driving me crazy >;[
i think its either ick or fungus it killed 2 of my oscars and almost killed another ...but i bought some medicine from my local fish store...you might want to get it takien care of as soon as you can...
Is it stringy? I have some in a 5 gallon guppy tank that I have been manually removing. It showed up 2 weeks ago, and killed off half of the guppies. I'd imagine it's some sort of fungus. ask the crew at
wetwebmedia com they should be able to help us out.
Glad to hear the new sword plant is doing well. Did you introduce it the same time you got the slimey stuff? It may be the source of it. You should always clean plants before adding them to the tank
oh ok.. n i bought my sword like 3 days ago so no it isnt the soure but i had driftwood that was covered n tht stuff so i took that out and im soaking them for a while but the driftwood isnt the source either n yeah sometimes it gets stringy :/ but not on the glass no my plants.. thnks Gvt44 n what med. did yu get bigdoglildog1??
Buy a good substrate, do water changes, and have at least 2-3 watts per gallon of flourescent or compact flourescent lighting. Discus can be found online (aquabid . com, Jackwattley . com, etc... just google discus) They can also be found at your LFS :)
oh cus i have a amazon sword and it isnt doing so good i think its cus of the gravel eh yeah all i have is gravel is that why its dying? i use fertilzer and good light [i think] but thanks for the other advice :]
Probably not.. I have my two largest amazon swords (a 26 gallon) in regular gravel... with only 20 watts of light too, lol. (Very slow growth) What type of fish do you have with it? What type of fertilizer?
oh well i got 3 angelfish n 5 giant danios [imma bout to gie em away]n two small female guppies [i know crappy tank] [its a 28 G bowfront by the way] n im using Leaf Zone but it makes my water yellow n nasty but im not planning to buy disccus yet i still need more experience :/
Well, giant danios have been know to bother plants... so that may be a reason, but I would do 2 x 1/3 water changes within a few days of each other, and stop using the leaf zone for a month, and see how they do. Good Luck!
Psychic... I have a few mbuna as well, and discus are definitely slower, lol. They can definitely be fast if they want though... I have seen them cross the entire tank in less than the blink of an eye!
With discus and plants, you'd want to use CO2. A bristlenose plec of various strains would be the only ones to keep in there.
The first thing why your plants are dyeing is probably because theres a lack of nutrients in the water such as iron,CO2 etc. Addng liquid plant food helps if you cant have access to CO2. I use it in my half planted tank and have had great results. Because of the amount of fish in there they produce a heap of waste which the plants eat so they never really die.
While you can dose and inject CO2, it isn't really necessary to grow plants. With CO2 and dosing, your plants will grow faster, and brighter, but you have to pay for C02, constantly watch it, and whether you go automatic with selinoids, ph controllers, etc or
I used to dose, but the discus didn't like it too much, and with a 125 gallon tank, I was using it by the gallon-$! I don't believe keeping discus and plecos is a good idea.
While bristles are one of the more peaceful species, it is still a pleco, and loves to suck the mucus off the side of the discus. I suggest buying easy to grow plants (vallisneria, amazon swords, java moss/fern, crypts, onion plants, etc) , get a light that delivers 2 watts per gallon or more, and do those water changes! HTH!
i have a 55 gallon discus fish tank with seven discus and one pleco, but i dont kno y the plants in my tank do not survive like urs, ur plants are very nice. But i just need tips on how to sucessfully have a planted discus tank. Thanks
How large is your pleco? What type/ how much lighting do you have? What type of substrate? What type of plants are you attempting to grow? What are your water parameters? With those answers I can better help you :)
I havent got a video no.But i have got a slide show video that i made using various images of discus i found I could send it to you? or you could look on my channel its in amongst my other vids.
If you are refering to the substrate, it is eco-complete mixed with flourite- if I had to do it over though, I would just use the eco-complete, as the flourite makes too much dust int eh water column.
They sure are! I used to use an iron fertilizer, but the discus seemed to be acting oddly when I would dose it, so I stopped. I shoot for a very slow growing tank, with prunings once a month. I do have a large PC flourescent fixture, and everything thrives under that.
Just have to watch the algae. Although I almost bought a co2 unit, I chose not to, because of the pH swings (not good for the "kings of the aquarium") It can be done, but with discus, it should be electronically controlled with a selonoid valve.
Thanks! Although discus can be kept alone or with other fish, they really are best kept alone, and enjoy the company of their own species. Gourami's tend to be a little on the aggressive side when it comes to food, so the discus (which are very shy eaters) may not get enough to eat. How big is the tank? How long have you had these three fish together? What are your tank parameters? (Nitrate, temp, pH, hardness) With more information, I can better answer your question. Good Luck!
Congrats! Yes, it is important to do them regularly, otherwise Nitrates build very quickly, as they are pretty dirty fish. Post a vid of yours and send me a message... I'd like to see them.
Nice tank, and your fish look real healthy. I just started keeping discus, and am adjusting to the more frequent water changes. I had some challenges in the beginning though!
Depends on the size, but usually $30- $60 each. Get them in a group (6- 8 fish) and make sure you have enough room for them to grow. Finally, make sure you have the time and resources for them; although they are very picky and are one of the more difficult type of fish to care for, they are well worth it in my opinion- just be sure to plan ahead and research!!!
It's a mix of eco- complete and flourite. I would skip out on the flourite though- it made a lot of red dust in the water (for 2 months). I have a 55 gallon with just eco- complete, and the plants grow very well. For advice- just ask away!

Haha, because I thought it looks cool- and I thought they were necessary for some reason-now I am leaning towards tanks without them.

Discus are about the most passive/non aggressive cichlid and usually are best suited to be paired up with small tetras, cories and plecos.

If you are refering to the substrate, it is eco-complete mixed with flourite- if I had to do it over though, I would just use the eco-complete, as the flourite makes too much dust int eh water column.

Just have to watch the algae. Although I almost bought a co2 unit, I chose not to, because of the pH swings (not good for the "kings of the aquarium") It can be done, but with discus, it should be electronically controlled with a selonoid valve.
