The pattern you see at the end is a warning tune to let you know that the roll is at its end and if you keep playing will start to tear. But as its an electric player , it will sense the holes at each end and will automatically reroll.
The pump in these pianola's are called steamboat pumps and have 6 lobes (sorta like a V6 motor). The pump you see in the clip is the correct pump and set up.Latter on they did go to a smaller 4 lobe set up.I have a player identical to this one and Duo-art rolls (especially classical music) play just beautifully.I dont have a video camera to make a clip but will see if i can get a friend to do the clip for me so i can post on here.
Yes. The pump probably is turning too fast. The motor is not one designed for the piano, but a substitute replacement. I believe that the air pressure is high - the piano plays with excessive force and volume. I, however, have insufficient knowledge on this.
This is a great clip showing the wonders of music of yesteryear. These sort of players in good condition go for top prices now.I have just a normal pumper player but will like to add a reproducing one to my collection.
Looks like a Steinway Duo-Art haunts this piano! Nice shots of the player action, though that sped-up camera trickery at the end was pretty whacked out... I really must say that the Steamboat pump is even quieter than I expected it to be... a testament to fine design! redraven13, if you want a player piano, Duo-Art or otherwise, you would do best to check Ebay and the Mechanical Music Exchange, which always have player pianos for sale, sometimes for the hauling away!

Nice Piano. You seem to be a good filmmaker. It's cool how you can show almost every nook and cranny of the piano.

Isn't the pump turning really fast? I don't know for sure because I never really saw one, only rotarypumps, but seems to me its pretty fast.
Would love to see a Duo-Art roll played on this piano to hear how the expression unit does....
