@MotownMagic 1959 I must admit, not having grown up here, I had never heard of Carolyn Crawford, but I too just got the "Cellar Full of Motown" CD and as soon as I got to her track, I immediately took to the music, recognizing it as solid MOTOWN all the way...What an unmistakable hook!...Thanks
She evevtually ended up at Philadelphia International, but I don't believe they did much with here either...I have a promo single on here, that I can't remember the title of right now, and I don't want to dig it out...She was first signed to Motown at an early age, but for some reason, not a lot of effort was put into promoting her career...Weird, and a big waste, based on how great this track it...I LOVE THIS ONE!!!
I first heard this on the Cellarful Of Motown CD set...it contains many clunkers, but this Carolyn Crawford side is a stand-out winner! I think her vocal got mixed down a bit too low, making it hard to hear at times. But that's my only gripe. It's one of my favorites. Thanks for posting.
Sad, sad, that Motown passed on Carolyn for she was a talent to be reckon with. By this time Motown was all into the Temps, The Four Tops, and truly the Supremes, Berry Gordy had his hands full. These groups were kicking out hits so that's all Berry wanted. Carolyn along with many others were over looked.
I've always been a fan of Carolyn ever since I first heard "My Smile Is Just A Frown Turned Upside Down" back in the 60's :-) it is as you say a great pity that all those other artists weren't promoted as much, maybe they didn't have enough resources in those days to promote them, I don't know the answer sadly :-( JOHN
What was Motown thinking passing this one over...not only does the song have an immediate "hook" but Carolyn delivers the goods all the way through...definitely would have been a big hit!
youtube sucks for taking "when someone's good to you" and "my smile is just a frown" by Carolyn of the line...(who the heck is TRULY SMITH?..ridiculous)
This is so good that you have this CD as they were going to release another compilation from Motown's vaults, but decided to abandon it?? have you heard Carolyn's track "My Smile Is Just A Frown Turned Upside Down" from 1964 that too is superb :-) Thanks for your comment. JOHN
YES - I have it on the "Hitsville USA 1959-1971" CD set - it sounds awesome - I could tell right away that it was a Smokey Robinson composition - its also a shame that such fine talent really went unnoticed at Motown - while Berry Gordy was grooming The Supremes for superstardom, a lot of Motown stars really got ignored and looked over - what a shame-
Yes, Smokey was a brilliant writer and producer wasn't he? I have Hitsville USA on a compilation LP from when I bought it in 1965!! and also an EP (extended play) of the same name from the same time, that I show in my videos on here, they are UK copies too! Almost all my Motown tracks are from original 45 rpm singles though. JOHN
MotownMagic can you PLEASE post "When Someone's Good To You"..."My Smile Is Just A Frown" would be nice too...Carolyn's two best songs...every time somebody posts them they get taken down..a shame...PLEASE help me out here MotownMagic...I need you
I am shocked that so many of us feel the same way about this amazing record! I listen to it almost daily and I never tire of it...BTW this was wriiten and produced by the amazing SMOKEY ROBINSON! Its so Smokey....
It's true what I've said before that Motown grows on you doesn't it? I too have always played this and never tire of any of them! Still MAGIC after all these years, :-)
Can anyone tell me who wrote and produced this beautiful song that sounds like it was recorded on the same day and in the same place Mary Wells' recorded "HONEY BOY" (check out HONEY BOY)
Carolyn did it again. "My frown" and this song has a good feel appeal to it. Both should have been MONSTER HITS! I believe Motown was "so powerful" that the other record companies were crying for air time! As a result songs like this went by the wayside.Motown was doin' it harder than I ever thought!
Yes, this is certainly a hit in my opinion, did you know that Jr Walker used to play in the background with the "Funk Bros" on all these brilliant records, too? You can hear that saxophone on many a Motown single!
This track was released, but only on a 2002 compilation entitled 'Cellar full of Motown'. It should have been a single as in my opinion is a classic and one of the best Motown tracks ever. It is, however, like many other classics that never saw the light of day. The marketing departments at Motown have a lot to answer for.
Yeah...and to think it almost happened to Marvin Gaye's "I heard It Through The Grapevine AND "What's Goin' On"...hoiw different music history would have been if Berry Gordy had gotten his way on those two
yes, yes, yes if your responsible for the recordings on this site please play "keep me" by liz lands with the tempts doing backround. how did you get copies of those rare recordings motown? keep them over the years? I would love to own some of them myself.
If you read my comments on the other singles, you'll see that I used to be a DJ, that's how I have so many good 45's, you've got me, I don't have "Keep Me" by Liz Lands (Gordy 7030-March 1964) that's a very rare 45. She only recorded 3 singles on Gordy Label for Motown. Everybody would help on each others records at Motown, I think that's what some of the magic was, do you agree?
Really? A DJ,you're sitting on a goldmine. I'm a 43 yo. from philly, motown has always been present here as long as I can remember, but alot of the b-sides and rare singles aren't played here. You should take butterball's (our oldies dj here) place, he plays to much disco for me, but anyway I do believe there is some kind of magic that comes along with most of the music that came from motown. "if you won't mind, I'm gonna stay in touch with ya! -Steev-
Yes Steev, these are rarely heard these days, even here in Brighton, UK, and I was a DJ back in the 70's so Motown in the 60's was really my time, and your from Philly, so that's another favourite record company of mine "Philadelphia International" you are welcome to stay in touch too, glad you like to hear them all, and everyone.
I have Keep Me on 45, i posted a vid of Midnight Johnny a while back, i found my copy for like 8 bucks at a swap meet in Pasadena California a long time ago
Sadly these recordings are very hard to find nowadays, but just imagine the many dozens of forgotten tracks that Motown never released although of course I love all the well-known tracks too, I've tried to restrain from putting too many well-known ones on here, as I think the forgotten ones should be heard again, just one more time, do you agree?
I'm what you'll consider a young motown fan, at the age of 43 I believe this era in music by far out shines any other in my opinion, also it's hard to imagine that a recording such as "until you came along" has not hit ahe music air waves here in phily like so many others have. Yes, Chris Clark was a good singer too! I'm thinking of adding the excellent Chris Clark version of the track "Do I Love You" (the old Frank Wilson classic from 1966) which was made the next year in 1967 VIP 25034 but never released!!
You are very observant "rhythmsearch" as this indeed an unreleased track, and just think of all those other recordings still in "The Pit" at Motown, is it not "Motown Magic" such happy times!
Carolyn Crawford should have been one of Motown's biggest stars, but instead her tracks are lost in obscurity smh...
