I never play with a guitar pick, I hate picks, but I just keep wondering how John at 3:34 is like "tadaa here's a guitar pick!". Where was he holding that? Between his fingers while fingerpicking?? Can anybody with a bit of guitar knowledge answer this to me?

it could be for a number of reasons tobias, being a live performer myself, you cant hear yourself sometimes or maybe he had a cold or sore throat. he keeps in tune pretty well in my opinion . . .he just sings it differently and uses different inflections than usual. but i've found with john mayer, the worse he sings the better his playing is!
its actually not that hard bud. if you move your body with the music your hands just take over with the rhythm of your body and you can focus on your singing. not blatant obviously just a subtle jam with what your doing like he does. thats why stage presence is important not only in terms of a visual performance but a complete musical performance. you have to be in to it to really play a song anyway.

When you think of songs as just a collection of notes, it kind of demotes the song in my mind :/. just a thought.
but another thing for you to consder:
there is a gray area when it comes to "emulating", as oppossed to taking chord progressions similar to someone elses, that create a certain mood, and then passing it off as your own. That's when it could be called plaigarism. (i.e. "dazed and confused" by led zep). I've had someone "emulate" my song note 4 note b4, and add their own lyrics.

math can't be compared to music. Do you even know what base 10 refers to? To say that nothing in music is ripped off is very naive of you. Do you know that Led Zeppelin didn't actually write "Dazed and Confused"? They STOLE it from another artist. Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" is under scrutiny for sounding nearly exactly like a song by Joe Satriani. Even if a copying of a style, even an accidental copying of a song, is done, it's still just that: ripping off.

Thats NOT ripping off. "Omg, I used the chords C, F, G, Im ripping him off", no. Music is a slow creative evolution.
And yes, base 10 refers to the digits used, i.e. 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 are used in base 10. Base 2 (binary) would be 0,1. This was meant as a hyperbolic statement to try and show the absurdity of "nicking a riff" being a negative thing. Its not stealing!

Songs can be stolen. if anyone else disagrees with me, i'l shut up. vocally, the singer for coldplay has the same vocal tone as Dave Matthews. someone said john mayer sounded like dave matthews, and i said i didn't think so.
AND met me explain something else: the order of C, F, and G chords, how they are played, when they are played, determine how unique a song is. there are many songs that use only those chords, but they are arranged differently, and the songs sound completely different.

Again, my idea with chords 1, 4 and 5 (lets not be scale biased here) was meant as an hyperbolic example, not truth, to show the absurdity of anything copyrighting or owning any combination of tones played.
I think the issue we're arguing with (and dont shut up, this is interesting mate! Keep the counters coming!) is more a matter of semantics. Stolen, has negative connotations, whereas paying homage to or "taking inspiration from" is a more postiive way of expressing the "same" idea.

I didn't mean that stole it from him. moreover, that he has his same style of vocals,
almost to the point that you could switch the frontment of coldplay and Dave matthews band,
and have the two bands still sound the same. When It's that close of an emulation, I tend to think that it does have a slight negative connotation.
What I think is really funny, is that we aren't arguing bout John mayer!! :P

sort of. yeah depth, how accents are placed on certain words. just listen to a song by DMB, then listen to a Coldplay song. the vocal tones are similar

Either John didn't warm-up well or he must have something messing with his vocal cords.
Also consider that this might be in the middle of his tour and he could be over tired.

No, he actually recently admitted in an interview that his vocal style was honed by failing to sound like other artists [Oh, could it be Dave Matthews?] Then he does an imitation of Dave Matthews. It's on You Tube.

Every singer has honed their own vocal style by failing to sound like other artists, it is almost impossible to have your own singing voice if you dont try to cop someone else first. I bet you Dave Matthews wanted to sound like someone else back in the day but realized he couldn't and he developed his own style, , John definitely has his own style. I can distinguish the two from one another. I have seen both videos you are referring to. [the one of John imitating Dave was supposed to be fun.]

well I've given lots of live performances as well and of course you can have a bad day, or a sore throat like you said, but I don't see why that's an excuse to sing out of tone like john does sometimes, no disrespect or anything, he's amazing...

No it isnt an excuse . . .I guess we'll never know why. it personally doesnt bother me. its just in tune enough for someone just listening not to notice. but you an I tobiassegura, we cant tell because thats what we've been trained to do. but i guess when you make the bucks like he does, you can whatever your little heart desires, right? I really like the way he ends it.

It's strange to see how he sometimes sings incredible, and sometimes really terrible! I personally don't understand this, because if you can sing there is no reason to be so out of tone...

it could be for a number of reasons tobias, being a live performer myself, you cant hear yourself sometimes or maybe he had a cold or sore throat. he keeps in tune pretty well in my opinion . . .he just sings it differently and uses different inflections than usual. but i've found with john mayer, the worse he sings the better his playing is!

its actually not that hard bud. if you move your body with the music your hands just take over with the rhythm of your body and you can focus on your singing. not blatant obviously just a subtle jam with what your doing like he does. thats why stage presence is important not only in terms of a visual performance but a complete musical performance. you have to be in to it to really play a song anyway.
