  • I never play with a guitar pick, I hate picks, but I just keep wondering how John at 3:34 is like "tadaa here's a guitar pick!". Where was he holding that? Between his fingers while fingerpicking?? Can anybody with a bit of guitar knowledge answer this to me?

  • @Ccbroo ya he sometimes keeps one held under his index finger and hes still able to fingerpick but when he wants he can pull the pick out and just like u said "tadaa"

  • I've come to a conclusion. Alot of the people that praise John Mayer don't know much about guitar technique.. he's not very technical. Even the way his playing is structured is not that advanced. He's an alright player though.. he doesnt suck. It's back up guitar players who are better who dont get as much press tho. He sounds the same on pretty much every song also.. what ever happened to diversity, dynamics, phrasing.. etc

  • Nah it's his signature model in sunburst, but it looks very similar to the SRV strat. One clue is that you can see that the tremolo on Mayer's guitar is the regular right handed form, wheras SRV's is actually a lefty block.

  • @mindaflame7 You obviously don't understand how music is made. The other guitarists are playing subtle lines while JM plays the main riff. It all comes together to form a whole and complete piece of sound

  • I think it's you who "Obviously" doesn't understand. What i mean is, Three guitars are WAY too redundant in such a simple song as this one. ONE guitarist alone was more than enough to pull this off, and i'm sure everyone who enjoys payers such as Mayer would rather see/hear HIM play the songs, instead of using two other "safety nets". Stevie played WAY more complicated music on his own, o did Hendrix, so does Erick Johnson, and NO "subtle lines" seem to be missing from their live performances.

  • Learn it by ear! This song is really really simple, it'll honestly take 5 minutes to learn by ear. It'll help you in the long run.

  • honest to god, fuck tabs.. really, fuck em. Learn everything you can by ear. It won't work in the beginnen, it really won't, but after a few songs you'll get better at it. If you really push yourself, you'll eventually be able to play along with song after you've listened once or twice.

    there is a gray area when it comes to "emulating", as oppossed to taking chord progressions similar to someone elses, that create a certain mood, and then passing it off as your own. That's when it could be called plaigarism. (i.e. "dazed and confused" by led zep). I've had someone "emulate" my song note 4 note b4, and add their own lyrics.

Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" is under scrutiny for sounding nearly exactly like a song by Joe Satriani. Even if a copying of a style, even an accidental copying of a song, is done, it's still just that: ripping off.

    AND met me explain something else: the order of C, F, and G chords, how they are played, when they are played, determine how unique a song is. there are many songs that use only those chords, but they are arranged differently, and the songs sound completely different.

    Again, my idea with chords 1, 4 and 5 (lets not be scale biased here) was meant as an hyperbolic example, not truth, to show the absurdity of anything copyrighting or owning any combination of tones played.

    I think the issue we're arguing with (and dont shut up, this is interesting mate! Keep the counters coming!) is more a matter of semantics. Stolen, has negative connotations, whereas paying homage to or "taking inspiration from" is a more postiive way of expressing the "same" idea.

  • Every singer has honed their own vocal style by failing to sound like other artists, it is almost impossible to have your own singing voice if you dont try to cop someone else first. I bet you Dave Matthews wanted to sound like someone else back in the day but realized he couldn't and he developed his own style, , John definitely has his own style. I can distinguish the two from one another. I have seen both videos you are referring to. [the one of John imitating Dave was supposed to be fun.]

  • it could be for a number of reasons tobias, being a live performer myself, you cant hear yourself sometimes or maybe he had a cold or sore throat. he keeps in tune pretty well in my opinion . . .he just sings it differently and uses different inflections than usual. but i've found with john mayer, the worse he sings the better his playing is!

  • its actually not that hard bud. if you move your body with the music your hands just take over with the rhythm of your body and you can focus on your singing. not blatant obviously just a subtle jam with what your doing like he does. thats why stage presence is important not only in terms of a visual performance but a complete musical performance. you have to be in to it to really play a song anyway.
