Check out the Skip James version..... and Skip's "I'm So Glad". Very cool of Cream to give him the credit he deserved, which helped pay for his hospital care before he died....
Nice version. The singe captures some of the "hair raising falsetto" of Skip James's original (qv), and the guitar is very respectful to the song as well, not turning it into a riff-slanging piece, but for the most part just supporting the vocal, and providing bridges between verses. The guitar is actually more restrained than you would think, watching the video--because the production highlights it much more than what the band is actually playing. Well it is the Trucks band.
@CroatAndNettles . The SJ version is the original and SJ was incredible. I listen to both versions regularly.
This arrangement is very good, especially for an entire band, the vocals do make the song. I am not sure what to make of "indifferent guitar".It is not hard to imagine SJ and DT playing together. If you just plain don't like DT, well ok.
@Gallagherfreak100 I really have a hard time seing the AC style in Derek's playing. AC didn't slide, used capo high up on the board, and tuned his guitar in an Open F-minor , F-C-F-Ab-C-F or an Open D-minor tuning
These are the most amazing musicians, second generation. Imagine growing up with the Allman Brothers Band. Derek then turns around and marries the very best new blues singer, Susan Tedeschi, Wow oh wow, Can't wait for their kids to grow up...This is a great band for someone like me who has listened to what is now classic rock all my life. Hell, you get burnt. This is music for any blues fanatic such as myself!!!
Totally brilliant. Saw Derek backing Eric Clapton a few years ago. Eric also had Robert Cray with him, and Doyal Bramhall II. Their joint rendition of Motherless Children was afuckingmazing, and I will remember it all my life.
i kind of agree with you, bluesman, but seriously, if you don't have anything better to do with your time than argue on youtube with a bunch of people you'll never meet, that's pretty sad
r u guys even talkin about THE music or are you a bunch of self indulged cyber critics? if you don't like it leave it the fuk alone don't start typing like you stuff your fat faces..imo or maybe its just me...NOT!
its ok... thebluesguy just can't handle truck's awesome skills. he is not wrong to say that derek trucks is not his thing but to say that he has minimal talent is retarded and makes it clear that he has a small member. at least the rest of us know quality when we hear it. let him stew in the pot he has put himself in. everyone wins
Since you think that Trucks' only claim to fame is that he inherited it, I'd have to guess that the real issue is that you're just a bitter No Talent Bum (your words, not mine) who doesn't have what it takes to rise above the hordes of amature players. Bluesman? I've seen your videos... you can't even play the blues!
Your criticism seems to have no basis in reality - Derek has great tone, great technique, and most important plays with real SOUL. That's what music is all about. Anyone with a little talent and enough time can play fast, but the guys who's playing just reaches down inside always get my respect.
about your comment that Trucks is only an immitator and not an originator... years ago I was critical of players I labeled as "Hendrix clones" - Robin Trower, Frank Marino, SRV, ect. Fortunately, I came to my senses, and even spent many hours learning to play their music. and I now know that each was great in his own way, and really carried forward a great playing style. The same is certainly true here - I hope that he and others carry this great style for generations.
Where there is some one with balls to play music there will always be haters. I am on the fence with this band but just seeing some of these comments by people sitting on there ass complaining is too much.
@thejoeb1 Im just a back porch bluesman,I know Im not hot shit..ive seen a lot of blues players..trucks is not much of one,as i said hes OK,a minimal talent. People who think he is great are prople who have never seen the greats, even the allmans who "were" great are only a shadow of their former selves. Hes an imitator not an originator..just like Haynes, but Haynes is a bit better.
@skitheport How about Johnny Winter..to start, and Hey..trucks came to my area this weekend, didnt draw flies, matter of fact they put out a fake "Claptons gonna be there" rumor to boost pathetic sales.BTW..the singer sucks too,hes like blues imitaion.
@Nangus01 It's actually best not to argue who is best, because that's not what it is about, and its not what they are trying to do. You are missing the point of the original intent of the music.
@TheBluesguy62154 wat are u even saying? first off, trucks sounds nothing like dickie betts, other than that they both play an SG nd are/were in ABB. Second, are u dissing dickie betts? that would be very idiotic.. Thirdly, by NO stretch of the imagination is this "awful." ANYONE who knows the blues, even if they dont like trucks' style, would label this awful unless they are a hater or a complete retard. Your either trying to stir up shit for fun, not listening to the music, or u have no soul.
absolutely amazing!! i'm going to see him and susan tedeschi open up for Jeff Beck in 3 weeks!! what an amazing artist! If you haven't seen it already everyone should check out the video of him playing Layla in 1993 when he only 14!!! It blows my mind when ever i hear him!!

@bloodthirstyworks i reckon if Skip James came back from the dead he'd be giving trucks et al mad props for doing such an insane job of his song.
Trucks = tone squared, and James would be more qualified than most to appreciate that.

I've seen the current ABB twice in the last couple years and Derek fits right in. You antis can go fire up your Henry Rollins band shit.
