I have had the good fortune to know 2 Pits in my life, both of whom were lap dogs. Mind you, they weighed 40 to 50 lbs, but were lap dogs nonetheless. A great dog given an undeserved lousy reputation from bad owners.

Punish the humans not the dogs. Most dog bites are from smaller breeds, which seem more aggresive. For example, some uppity lady with 2 smaller dogs gave me a dirty look at petsmart w/ my pit mix, but the funny thing was, both her dogs were on their hind legs on her leash trying to come at my dog, who cowered!! Seems like that happens more w/small dogs. The only bad thing about my dog is that he makes it so damn hard to get outta bed when he's snuggling with me. THEY'RE THE BEST CUDDLERS!!!!!!
Well the breed was originally bread for fighting but over time and nice people the dog developed two sides "nice side" and "bad side" people who are mean to the dog get the "bad side" people who are nice to the dog get the "nice side" Simple!!!
@ianandcharlesfoo pit bulls were originally BRED for herding and taking down bulls for butchers and bears for hunters. When this died out, THEN they were further developed into a fighting dog. There is no "bad side". The dog has been bred for hundreds of years to please people. If the owner trains the dog to be violent and hostile- the dog will do that TO PLEASE THE OWNER. They were ALWAYS bred to be a people dog. ORIGINALLY, any pit that showed aggression towards humans was immediately culled.

many pities have been bread for aggression, that is a fact i can't deny. but that isn't true for the majority. i happen to work at a vet where we get a large amount of strays that come through, and i can tell you from experience that there ARE dangerous pits that were born violent because of intended breeding. BUT. the majority of dogs coming through, even as strays, are the sweetest i've ever met. one in particular came in emaciated, clearly abused, and filthy. she is the best dog i've ever had

My mother has a Pit-bull named Lola and a Black Lab named Presley. They are the funniest pair of dogs you will ever see. This vid is true, most pit bulls are good, but they seem to forget that there are bad pit bulls out there. That is why dogmen culled the undisirables, to keep the pit bull good. They didn't want to produce human aggressive dogs.

We got him when he was 2 months old and we didn't know he was a pitbull because the SPCA said it was a bulldog mix. The vet told us that he was a pitbull and my parents wanted to take him back. I fought about this for awhile because I loved my dog. They thought he was going to hurt me. Let's just say I ended up winning and keeping my puppy :) He's now 4 years old <3

Too bad there are so many ignorant people out there breeding these dogs, which are being outlawed increasingly. Hopefully they will do the right thing and have their dogs fixed and learn proper handling techniques, so their image can be improved, and they can once again be accepted into society at large.

True. Pitbulls are great dogs but due to bad owners and breeders they get a bad repuation and are feared. I had a Pitbull named Lala and she was the SWEETEST dog you could ever see around. She never urinated inside the house no matter what and the only people she growled at were those that were theating. Sadly we had to give her away because we had to move to the states
Yo! I hate people who stereo-type this breed. it's all in how they're raised & they're known 2b PROTECTOR'S OF THE CHILDREN THEY LIVE WITH. I was at a friends house & he has a daughter who was 4 years old at the time & the pitbull was 5 years old & has known the daughter since she was born... so to the Pit, it's her baby! I was wrestling with the master & I tackled him down too close 2 his daughter & the Pitbull felt that I was a threat 2 the daughter, so she bit my leg & I had a scar for 2 yrs.
So, basically what I'm saying is... ANY DOG will bite when they feel threatened... it's in a DOGS NATURE !!! Not just a PITBULL !!! These dogs aren't dumb or stupid. As a matter of fact, 90% of dogs are dumb if u wanna look at it that way! They all have a brain the size of a peanut. Any dog can be trained properly, the less aggression the dog sees in their environment, the less violent ANY DOG will react when they feel threatened... but as u all know... Your position on this subject does have some validity, however, be reasonable. These dogs are extremely dangerous and potentially deadly if in the wrong hands. Instead of chiding society, which you perceive as intolerant and cruel, why not target your indignation on the dirty scum who breed these dogs to kill.
Any dog can be dangerous when trained to kill like you say... not just breeding Pits to kill... they are the most protective guard dogs of their own family... if you read the story on how I was bit by a pitbull, he had every reason to bite me, and was never trained to be violent... she just looked at this little girl as if it were her own... Pits are awesome... and I'll say it again... any dog can be trained to kill.

My point is that many pitbull owners blame society for an "unfair" and "intolerant" perception of the dog as a killer, when they as owners do everything to reinforce that image with the big steel chain and padlock around the neck, making the dog look as fearsome and aggressive as possible. If the argument is that pits are loving family dogs, then stop presenting this image of the pit as a gladiator. You can't have it both ways.

It's not the dog itself that it's aggressive, it's assholes that train the dog to be aggressive. In a perfect world almost all dogs would be friendly if they were trained right. I love all dogs, big or small, good looking or ugly!

A dog should never be chained, this just makes them crazy and mean. If a person is going to own a dog that is potentually dangeous they should have the proper type of contaimnment for the animal. i for one would never try and ban any dog, but a person should have the intellegence and common sense to own one!

@123leta my male pit saved me from being mauled by a stray that came into our yard. imagine this... the dog attacked my pit and my pit pinned him to the ground by the throat but when i told him to stop he did and the stray ran away unharmed but scared

I'm 12 and I just got chased down by a pitbull. It tried to knock me down by jumping on my back but luckily I didn't fall and I managed to get home. And no it wasn't "playing", it was barking and growling and it charged me for no reason. pitbulls are so sweet aren't they!?!

If the dog was close enough to jump on you and didn't bite you it didn't want to bite you. Alot of pits make some pretty weird sounds when playing or upset. I always joke that mine's part wookie because he sounds like chewbacca when he wants something. A dog that chases you down and jumps on you without biting you wasn't attacking you.
@ImTheOnlyIsaacHere --When my little brother was 8, he was attacked by a doberman. All we were doing was walking. The doberman attacked him from behind without any provocation. I don't hate all doberman's because of it, but I will admit I am afraid of most as most I have met have been vicious. Then again...so were their owners. No specific breed is a killer. No creature is born a killer, only made one and usually by the Man. A chiuaua can easily be turned into a "killer" dog. The Reason that humans picked this race amongst others is because of their strength in terms of muscle, their tension to work hard and the loyalty towards theis pack leader.

I think the whole hating pitbulls thing is partly rooted in racism. Who do most people think of when they think of a pit bull's owner? A drug dealer? A gang member? A black person of any kind? Thats what the media makes them out to be, and so people turn their racism into breedism.

@candihu I absolutely love pit bulls, they are all that you described yours to be. I am not saying that all pit bull owners are black, a gang member, or a drug dealer; I was only saying that people have that image of a PB owner ingrained in them from the media. I own a German Shepherd and, being a white female like yourself, can control him with no trouble at all. My dad who is considerably larger and stronger than I am has trouble controlling him, when all I do is say one word and he follows.

and its because when she was a puppy, she would get hyper and smack her tail against everything when she was wagging her tail. it would cut open, heal, cut open again, heal, and so on. it kept getting infected and it got so bad that the vet had to cut it.

I have had the good fortune to know 2 Pits in my life, both of whom were lap dogs. Mind you, they weighed 40 to 50 lbs, but were lap dogs nonetheless. A great dog given an undeserved lousy reputation from bad owners.

Punish the humans not the dogs. Most dog bites are from smaller breeds, which seem more aggresive. For example, some uppity lady with 2 smaller dogs gave me a dirty look at petsmart w/ my pit mix, but the funny thing was, both her dogs were on their hind legs on her leash trying to come at my dog, who cowered!! Seems like that happens more w/small dogs. The only bad thing about my dog is that he makes it so damn hard to get outta bed when he's snuggling with me. THEY'RE THE BEST CUDDLERS!!!!!!

@ianandcharlesfoo pit bulls were originally BRED for herding and taking down bulls for butchers and bears for hunters. When this died out, THEN they were further developed into a fighting dog. There is no "bad side". The dog has been bred for hundreds of years to please people. If the owner trains the dog to be violent and hostile- the dog will do that TO PLEASE THE OWNER. They were ALWAYS bred to be a people dog. ORIGINALLY, any pit that showed aggression towards humans was immediately culled.

many pities have been bread for aggression, that is a fact i can't deny. but that isn't true for the majority. i happen to work at a vet where we get a large amount of strays that come through, and i can tell you from experience that there ARE dangerous pits that were born violent because of intended breeding. BUT. the majority of dogs coming through, even as strays, are the sweetest i've ever met. one in particular came in emaciated, clearly abused, and filthy. she is the best dog i've ever had

I hate how everyone just thinks this breed is dangerous. Pitbulls are the best dogs out there. I remember when I got my Pitty. We got him when he was 2 months old and we didn't know he was a pitbull because the SPCA said it was a bulldog mix. The vet told us that he was a pitbull and my parents wanted to take him back. I fought about this for awhile because I loved my dog. They thought he was going to hurt me. Let's just say I ended up winning and keeping my puppy :) He's now 4 years old <3

My point is that many pitbull owners blame society for an "unfair" and "intolerant" perception of the dog as a killer, when they as owners do everything to reinforce that image with the big steel chain and padlock around the neck, making the dog look as fearsome and aggressive as possible. If the argument is that pits are loving family dogs, then stop presenting this image of the pit as a gladiator. You can't have it both ways.

If the dog was close enough to jump on you and didn't bite you it didn't want to bite you. Alot of pits make some pretty weird sounds when playing or upset. I always joke that mine's part wookie because he sounds like chewbacca when he wants something. A dog that chases you down and jumps on you without biting you wasn't attacking you.

@ImTheOnlyIsaacHere --When my little brother was 8, he was attacked by a doberman. All we were doing was walking. The doberman attacked him from behind without any provocation. I don't hate all doberman's because of it, but I will admit I am afraid of most as most I have met have been vicious. Then again...so were their owners. Do not hate the dog for what the owner teaches them.

@darkanddevious Dogs are not killing machines. They have instincts. They defend themselves. You go hurt a dog it might attack back. "might", cuz they have kind hearts too.
No specific breed is a killer. No creature is born a killer, only made one and usually by the Man. A chiuaua can easily be turned into a "killer" dog. The Reason that humans picked this race amongst others is because of their strength in terms of muscle, their tension to work hard and the loyalty towards theis pack leader.

@powerstrokenation88 ummmm check your resources. pit bulls were originally used for "bull baiting" in a pen or "pit" (hence the name pit bull) they were used to hang on to the bull and bring it down and have many times saved people from an attacking bull. check out law dogs usa dot org. you need to learn more about the breed before you spout off things like this. comments like this show ignorance on the subject of this breed

I think the whole hating pitbulls thing is partly rooted in racism. Who do most people think of when they think of a pit bull's owner? A drug dealer? A gang member? A black person of any kind? Thats what the media makes them out to be, and so people turn their racism into breedism.
If people of one race kill more people, should we ban a whole race? Or should we blame their parents for not raising them right?
Only problem is, people have control over thier actions, dog's don't.

@WanderMono i am a proud pit bull owner. i am so proud of my dogs beause they have wonderful temperments, are sweet, sill, inquisitive, and just so loyal and loving. i am a white female 5'4" and weigh 115 lbs. but you are right most media portrays pit bulls being owned by nefarious people. it's sad too because there are many pit bulls who are owned by responsible people like me and yet the media never hears about the responsible owners

@candihu I absolutely love pit bulls, they are all that you described yours to be. I am not saying that all pit bull owners are black, a gang member, or a drug dealer; I was only saying that people have that image of a PB owner ingrained in them from the media. I own a German Shepherd and, being a white female like yourself, can control him with no trouble at all. My dad who is considerably larger and stronger than I am has trouble controlling him, when all I do is say one word and he follows.

@WanderMono i have owned many different breeds of dogs and some putts as well. i have found pit bulls to be the most misunderstood breed out there. i know what you mean about steroetypes too. the media is a circus trying to blame every dog bite on pits when most people can't even accurately identify a real pit bull. lol i rescued a rott once and if not for me they would have put her down b/c she was abused and wouldn't listen to anyone but me. glad to knwo thers make good owners as well

and its because when she was a puppy, she would get hyper and smack her tail against everything when she was wagging her tail. it would cut open, heal, cut open again, heal, and so on. it kept getting infected and it got so bad that the vet had to cut it.

we only chain her up because we have an open yard and if we just let her go, she would run away. it doesnt hurt her or anything. its on a line between two trees that gives her plenty of space to run around :P

Don't BUY one..SAVE one..go check out your local Shelter / Rescue / Humane Society...they have a LOT of purebred APBTs and APBT mixes that would make WONDERFUL pets!!

@spc1124 i have one that i have had since a pup and one that i rescued. the female i rescued was in horrible shape she was starving and when i brought her home i learned she is great with cats too. now she weighs 93 lbs (she is HUGE) but not fat she is solid muscle but then i only feed her the best dog food. i have 2 very loving and loyal dogs and i believe that they would give their lives to protect me and my family if someone broke in
