in order to get the original megatron body he would have to travel back in time but in the process he would disrupt the fabric of time, optimus' body was already on cybertron and it was probably one of the most powerful transformer body at the time so it would be the best thing to use physically and mentally just to piss prime off for the hell of it

when beast wars started they got sent back in time because they were following megatron's ship

so they landed on prehistoric earth.

when they came back to cybertron, megatron fell off their ship when they were going back to the future and he ended up on cybertron long before they came so thats how he took over.

Quality? People few the original cartoon the best because they grew up with it, really it's quality is the worst. It's has the largest number of plot holes and continuity errors be far, although part of that came from it being the longest series.
