you missed the fact that another big reason windows gained market share was because early on Apple had failed to conform to well established standards

To further what Stealmind said, Apple rode on their successes of them niche marketplace. But Wozniak and Sculley said later in future interviews that Apple depended to highly on remaining just a niche and Apple almost went away forever as a result.
