i swear, every time i see a video of more than one featured soloist on the same instrument, there is always a youtube argument about who "won" or who was better. Do you kids even listen to jazz? wtf is this? Not a cutting competition, i know that for sure.
@OfficialJamesVincent good catch, although this is really just a medley of Now's the Time/Straight No Chaser. They switch to the second tune at 1:28, into the new blues key of F, I believe.
Oh, and all respect to the old masters, but what Eastwood MEANT to say at the end was that it was a universe BETTER than Flip Phillips and Illinois Jacquet did it. Ah, well. It is all down to taste, after all....
Niehaus' arrangement on this is killin'. Also, I think the "duel" is great- two of my favorite of the 'younger' jazz cats around at the moment and they both impress greatly for very different reasons...
I like that, a world class band, and world class soloist and the directors all like "ok guys three bars, two bars....one and a two and a three and a four"
First, that this isn't really a competition or a battle in anyway, just a really well prepared jam session. There isn't a "better" player, it is all subject to personal preference.
That being said, MY personal preference was in Redman's solos. I say this simply because Carter has raw power, he's bluesy, and has a great command of his sound, but Redman has an incredibly lyrical take of this song and he seems to be dancing circles around the changes.
@LorentzYeung I mean't that although Carter isn't ignoring the changes, he uses more traditional conceptions of the changes like roots, fifths, blues scales, etc. It seems to me like Redman has got a hold of the tonal centers of the changes well enough to "break through the glass ceiling" parsay. I just mean, that while carter's solo was great, Redman explored the flow of the changes and had a lot of movement conceptually around the changes, like playing over the changes, or blending in to them.
I'm pretty sure that Redman plays on on a balanced action but what does carter play on?

great concert,,,,I always wondered if rappers sit around jamming at home 24/7 driving their spouses crazy like instrumentalists do?

I have to agree with many on several points:
First, that this isn't really a competition or a battle in anyway, just a really well prepared jam session. There isn't a "better" player, it is all subject to personal preference.
That being said, MY personal preference was in Redman's solos. I say this simply because Carter has raw power, he's bluesy, and has a great command of his sound, but Redman has an incredibly lyrical take of this song and he seems to be dancing circles around the changes.
