@richpin06a love ur vids but was referring to you sounding like Raymond from everyone loves Raymond. Don't worry EVERYONE LOVE RAYMOND including me. and no one will ever hear my fucked-up voice on YouTube i don't have as much BALLS as you. Keep up the good work. Sorry for the back-handed compliment.
I wish I had this today. I've spent most of the morning trying to pull my socket and extension out of a deep well in my engine that is way hard to get to!
@pwhite7608 I've done that before, but after using it several times, it gets so loose that the plug falls out under its own weight and I have to use the needle nose to lift the plug out. I think with a tool like this, you wouldn't have to buy another one every time the moon is blue. ;)
@pwhite7608 How is that useless? BTW - I have been using a regular spark plug socket with an extension, but the problem I'm having is that the rubber boot that holds the plug is so tight that when I pull the socket off after installing a plug, the extension pops off and I have to use needle nose to remove it. Seems I wouldn't have that problem with this tool.
completely unnecessary. You undo all the spark plugs with a deep socket, then use an old spark plug boot on the end of a screwdriver for plug extraction.
Hey richpin...just a follow up...I went to AutoZone today and Greatneck has made it shorter, its now 11 1/2 inches instead of the 15 1/2, which was too long. Same item #28004. My old one might suddenly break and get exchanged for the newer version. ;)
harbor freight has a 3/8" drive, deep, long socket for spark plugs that i used on my DOHC. it cost less than $5. I did have to use the 3/8" drive extension, though.
Richpin, thanks for all the wonderful instructional videos! I was looking to see if this tool was available at my local Autozone and they didn't have it. So, I was searching for it on-line and ran across a 6" magnetic... well,
Gear Wrench, 5/8" x 6" Magnetic Swivel Spark Plug Socket [Part No. 80546]
still priced well! I haven't seen one yet to know of its quality, but worth putting out there. Do they still have a rubber lining?
@danceswithbeats follow-up: Saturn's FSM and Haynes Manual both specifically state that you should not use a wobble (swivel) socket, but it was fairly easy to steady it with my left hand resting on the camcover so I don't think it's a big deal. Even in this video, it looks as if the ceramic insulator hit the side of the socket for a moment. Inserting the plug into the socket was a little weird out of the car, but the wells are narrow enough that I didn't even think about it in the car.
Thanks. I got this cuz of your recommendation. Nice tool, low cost. Strong Magnet, good scoring/knurling for starting plug. Amazon for 10.08 w/free shipping cuz I was buying other items. It is long though, 15 1/2 almost too long. KD makes shorter ones but higher cost and only sold as set of 3. Thanks again.
GreatNeck was once a good brand name years ago, now it's made in China junk. Every GreatNeck tool I've ever bought has failed under heavy use, usually requiring a lot of frustration as I have to stop my job and head to town, or worse have to stop my job altogether if it's after hours or on weekends.
You can accomplish the same thing with a Craftsman magnetic spark plug socket, a U-joint, and a extension. Well made, guaranteed forever, plus can be used for many things not just plugs
Thanks for posting this, the Snap-on price was just stupid. Just picked it up last week and it saves the pain of the extension coming off. Not having a spark plug socket(somebody stole it) I have been using an old plug wire to extract and start the plugs
I love all your vids.. i have been fixing a SL2 1999 and your vids have saved me loads of time, just like today, with this cool tool for changing plugs... totally painless and i see the reason to have one...
Do they sell just the socket with the magnetic insert, it's just the size thing, something that can fit inside a small tool box that can be carried around your car for emergencies...
Mac tools make a set of good magnetic sockets(expensive). Craftsman makes magnetic inserts for sockets but they would only be helpfull on removing the plug.
Interesting tool. I like how it has the magnetic piece inside of the socket, instead of the typical rubber gasket. Seems like a much better design.
The only thing that I wouldn't like about this particular tool is that I think the extension piece is a bit too long. If it was about half the size I think it would be a lot better.
i didn't know Raymond was a mechanic.

That silly tool only works for I4 engines... kinda useless for any DOHC engine worth a dam (V6, V8) its way too long LOL

Thank you richpin for all your videos, they have been invaluable to me :) You mention Autozone frequently, are there no O'Reilly's in your area?

@amberlee2225 I do not recall seeing any O'Reillys in central MA

@danceswithbeats They did away with the rubber insert on the magnetic sockets.

they suck anyways they all wore out on all 3 of my plug sockets! lol

I to wish it would have been shorter but for the price you can't complain to much.

@Proverbs1x26refresed Yes, some of the China made stuff is crappy, but the "USA made" stuff is also made in China.

Oh nice, should have got this when i was there for my ranger. Gave up chaning them with an extension.
MADISON608 2 years ago
I don't see what's so handy about it. You could just take a typical spark plug socket and put an extension on it.
MoPar7055 2 years ago
Regular sockets are prone to pulling off the extension when removing after you have tighten the plug.
richpin06a 2 years ago
Ive got one like that, from when I had another dohc, but not w/ a magnet, just a gasket inside, but works great still!
