You know I reckon Cloris Leachman deserved it for actually smiling and happy and not taking the Oscar thing so seriously like the other two nominees, the older nominees are always so tense lol.
One of the best-deserved Oscars the Academy has ever awarded. The closing scene of The Last Picture Show is in a class of it's own. Absolutely heart-rending.
Yes, Cloris Leachman was indeed Miss America from Iowa about 20 years before winning this Academy Award in 1972 at age 46. I'm sorry, but Raquel Welch can't hold a candle to her beauty (and brains and talent) even though she was 14 years younger!
@00s00m What are you kidding me? Raquel Welch in 1972 was the hottest Sex Symbol in the world. Look at Welch's high cheek bones, and sexy body. Leachman is cute but please don't compare her to La Welch.
Did you folks see our fav. Cloris Leachman pole dancing in this parody video mokumentary go to gogranny.co and see. I think Cloris can play any role and has great talent
@marcusbondi it was Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein.. its' Gene Hackman on this video giving the award..he is a great actor too..Poseidon and other great movies..
@bjw999999 Actually, Gene Hackman was in Young Frankenstein too. Do you remember the scene when Frankenstein escapes the castle and goes to the blind man's house? Well Hackman was the blind man. Just one small scene but he was brilliant in it nonetheless.
@granolagirl8819 Yep, Cloris was a Beauty. That is part of the reason I love YouTube cuz younger ppl can see that we older ppl were young and beautiful once too LOL!! Cloris and Betty White ROCK!!!
It's still a big toss-up for me between Leachman and Burstyn. It seems to change every time I watch The Last Picture Show. Currently, I'd give it to Burstyn.
Those who've known Cloris solely as a comedienne should watch her performance as the lonely, frustrated smalltown housewife in "The Last Picture Show".
Cloris Leachman in The Last Picture Show is the best supporting performance I have ever seen. Seeing her on Mary Tyler Moore show and the sitcoms she did in the 70's and 80's I was in complete awe of her broken and heartbreaking performance as a lonely wife in The Last Picture Show. That final scene is filled with wounded pride, bitter resentment and calm humanity. A GREAT piece of work.
I barely heard of any of those movies in the Oscars, but I think Cloris was AWESOME as Nurse Diesel in Mel Brook's "High Anxiety". Those who are late do not get fruit cup!
But, hey, on that Comedy Central Roast, she just about said what I was thinking: Somebody hit me so I can see stars. The Dean Martin Roasts had some bona fide legends. Why can't the people from this generation get together and salute a collegue the same way?
!5-16 years in from her appearanlce in "Kiss Me Deadly" and looking good.
i really love cloris leachman and this performance but ellen burstyn should've won. she sketched out this entire woman's life in a matter of a few scenes, the true definition of a supporting actress.
All 5 nominees were very good but Ellen Burstyn won The New York Film Critics Circle Award for the same movie, The Last Picture Show, so Burstyn's performance was excellent. Barbara Harris was great, AnnMargaret too and in the wonderful classic British film "The Go Between" starring Julie Christie and Alan Bates, Margaret Leighton was awesome as J. Chrisite's character's mother. Voters had a hard choice to make this year, great perfromances in a great period for movies, the late60's&early70's.
I had the privelege of meeting Cloris this past fall. She shot a movie in my hometown. All I can say is what an amazing person! So funny and full of life. Kudos Cloris! Hope you get another Oscar someday. If you are a fan of Cloris, check her out in The Fields.
Lord, hard to believe that was 38 years ago. Cloris looked so natural and pretty. And how wonderful (or at least significantly better) Oscar-acceptance speeches were. Whereas today, people feel like they have to stand and rattle off a laundry list of thank-yous (Halle Berry thanking her lawyer—twice!) Cloris could barely think of the three. I need to watch The Last Picture Show.
It's like, Cloris Leachman was 46 years old in 1972! But she was still incredible handsome! Wow! I don't think they do beautyful woman like this anymore!
With 25 years old women are doing plastic, on the lips, or tits, or everyrewhere else! And not getting good, just make it worst!
Holy Crap, as much as these ladies can act, they sure didn't hide their freaked out emotions here. I suppose I'm glad Cloris won because she is funny as hell in everything she does.
That's the Cloris Leachman I remember. She looks like the pretty, stereotypical flower child of the 60's minus the stoned glaze in her eyes. I never knew she ever won an Oscar though. According to Wikipedia she would have been 45 years old at the time of this award.
The remarkably well preserved Miss Welch wasn't much of an actress but daaaaaaaaang, what a absolutely gorgeous woman! She's like 70 yrs old now yet she almost still looks like she did in this clip way back in 1972.
Wanna watch a really, really great movie? Rent "The Last Picture Show." Not just for Cloris Leachman, but also for Jeff Bridges, Sybil Shepard, and Timothy Bottoms. So great!
She had such a pretty smile. Beautiful teeth and her hair looked nice long. I have been going back and watching her on old MTM shows--her talent was underrated on that show.
Why have the stopped saying the winner is. I am so sick of this the oscar for outstanding achievement in a performance in a supporting role go to - instead of just winner for best supporting actress.
mainly her dialog in the kitchen with Timothy Bottoms...her insecurity. She's an amazing actor and Brando thought of her as one of the best from the Actors Studio.
When Sandra Bullock gets it next time 'round, i'll be thinking about this clip. Cloris facial resemblance & simple, self-deprecating demeanor will have been a prophecy.
It's funny, she looks better there than she did in Mary Tyler Moore. It seems that they always downplayed her looks and of course you all remember her in the Mel Brooks film High Anxiety.
