Cloris Leachman in The Last Picture Show is the best supporting performance I have ever seen. Seeing her on Mary Tyler Moore show and the sitcoms she did in the 70's and 80's I was in complete awe of her broken and heartbreaking performance as a lonely wife in The Last Picture Show. That final scene is filled with wounded pride, bitter resentment and calm humanity. A GREAT piece of work.

All 5 nominees were very good but Ellen Burstyn won The New York Film Critics Circle Award for the same movie, The Last Picture Show, so Burstyn's performance was excellent. Barbara Harris was great, AnnMargaret too and in the wonderful classic British film "The Go Between" starring Julie Christie and Alan Bates, Margaret Leighton was awesome as J. Chrisite's character's mother. Voters had a hard choice to make this year, great perfromances in a great period for movies, the late60's&early70's.
