  • yes, it's missing some sections from the published version, but it's exactly the way Basie recorded it on the Chairman of the Board record.

  • this is missing a whole section

  • Great job my middle school jazz band is playing this and with me as a lead trumpet this helps a lot thank you!!! :D

  • I noticed that the saxophones all seemed really absorbed in the song. In my opinion, as a tenor sax player myself, the more absorbed in the song you are, the better you sound. Some people might say you need to stay alert so that you know what the director is doing, but I honestly think that feeling the music is also just as important as looking at the director. Excellent job you guys, it sounded amazing

  • Hmm! Sounds amazing. I looked this up since we are playing it my highschool and I play tenor. I needed to see if I was getting the part right. It's a very interesting piece. This jazz band is very small compared to the one I am in, but they still manage to bring out the full flavor of the piece. It sounds amazing! Great job guys, keep it up!

  • Good stuff. The first half sounded like it was grinding to a halt at times, but it picked up later.

  • Interesting sax row at tenor, tenor, alto, alto, bari. What does that do for the ensemble? Great rendition folks. That bone solo is killer.

  • Absolute stellar performance! Being a jazz musician and bandleader myself, I can appreciate standing in front of a group of amazing musicians and hearing things "gel" and everyone's in the pocket. I must comment on the irrelevant negative remarks: The world has no place for "jazz elitists," who feel the need to show off their own false sense of superiority by criticizing the musicianship of others; it only makes you look like assholes. Kudos to the band!!!

  • Nice job, I liked your rendition.

  • THE BEST NON-BASIE VERSION YET. GREAT JOB GUYS.

    RANDY

  • great job guys.

  • alot of shit-talking amatures on here... any artists out there who are confident enough in their own knowledge and ability to simply say good job? i see a couple.

  • @MrJesawyer true that

  • I like johnny One Notes Trombone Solo....come on man....put some stank and grease on that shit...

  • I liked the trombone part !! Very nice

  • anyone know where i can order this arrangement of Blues in hoss flat please tell me!!

  • 13th staple - The tempo we took it at is the original tempo recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra. Of course with most of Basie's music it will swing at any tempo, but i tend to go with the original.

  • o ok that would makes sense. our jazz band took it at 84

  • i just played this song for a jazz festival and i thought that the tempo should be alot slower than this

  • Saw this band at the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival (Chicago, couple of years ago). They ruled... The trumpet solo was awesome. Probably the best college band at the festival.

  • I disliked the soloists, and The interpretation of the trumpets on the plunger part was... yeah.... But everything else is tight. Yeah, my Jazz Band is playin it this year. Lead Alto :)

  • actually it makes sense use plunger mute. it emphasis how free it is

  • @helenjun5970 But they cracked into the mute... lol

  • i love dis song. i play piano on this song in my middle school jazzband.

  • Were playing this in my jazz band. oh and BTW NIUSax28 your crazy...they nailed this song.

  • @Nate98371 Sorry. I guess I'm just used to good jazz bands. The soloists in this video need a lot of work. This band just doesn't have the Basie Style down.

  • ur so picky lol the world isnt always a competiton

  • We're playing this in my highschool jazz band aswell. I'm alto saxophone. :D

  • great job!

  • It's not a Big Swing tune. It's a shuffle. Which is naturally more aggressive.

  • awesome. love the trumpet. ya im the jazz pianist and we're playing this

  • you guys do your job well

  • i love the part from 1:46 - 2:30

  • we are playing it in our high school jazz band class, jazz piano here

  • thats amazing i happen to be playing this in a middle school jazz band. i play the flute

  • In a MIDDLE school band? gee....

  • flute in jazz band? (look at me replying to a 9 month old comment xD)

  • wow

  • Great band -- great sound. Fantastic trumpet solo..

  • I agree. Its amazing what you can do with a plunger.
