  • 'Er sein sie, versicht die hude.'

  • I've studied German and for some reason I always thought the headman was saying 'Here he is, minus a head!'

  • jeg er skiikkkelig forbaannaa

  • 0:18

  • Zulu

  • I hate to tell you but besides the few words shouted in German, most of the chant is taken straight from the movie Zulu. And though it may be a rip off its done to great effect. Look up the youtube video "Zulu War Chants" and go to about 1:03. Same chant just re-mastered.

  • God, when you hear them in the woods. Goosebumps, I don't know why, but it just sends chills down my spine. The movie is very well done

  • When this film first came out I was only 9, I'm 21 now and that Barbarian yelling still sends chills down my spine.

  • the guy tht shouts is a scotsman in real life.

  • I always hated that bearded fuck yelling like a tool, now I hate him even more

  • Why cant I find the first 10 minutes of Gladiator any where on youtube.... Its the best part of the film.... If anyone has it, PLEASE UPLOAD IT.

  • @5thcenturyad It's a little thing called copyright laws...

  • @DeathlyDavid That was the first thought that crossed my mind, but then I thought: its 12 years old, this is youtube, Im not asking to see the whole film here.... just 10 minutes.

  • @DeathlyDavid OMG, fuck youtube and their copyright laws. Upload what ever you want and if they pull it, so it again. They can't do shit but ban you and all you do is sign up again.

  • @arthurkitchen I know! But there are a lot of people (myself included) that have a lot of memories with my channel and a lot of Favorited videos. I don't really wanna lose it .

  • Dose anyone know why I cant find the first 10 minutes of Gladiator any where on youtube?... Its the best part of the film.... If anyone has it, please please upload it.

  • @19Lae95 but germanic people dont spoke norwegian xD

  • @KyuubiNaruto82 I know, but remember. This is an American movie, and most Americans doesn't German or Norwegian.

  • @19Lae95

    That wasn't always the case.

  • @KyuubiNaruto82 norwegians are germanic according to the people who started calling everyone east of the Rhine to the Vistula and north Germani. It's a Roman name

  • zuluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • Germania was never conquerd it was in germania 3 Romans legions where walking in to their doom. It was the Germanic people who had conquerd whole europa.

Too bad there isnt a good movie About the Germanic tribes these days!

  • @gwergrherhq I made a video a couple of days ago called "Tribute To Arminius" If you like ancient Germans, click my username and have a look.

  • @gwergrherhq They are lot's of movies about Vikings etc, and they are Germanic tribes, but mostly called "Scandinavian tribes" instead.

  • Germans are so Proud !!!

  • Fucking assholes trying to translate a language that even experts don't know.'Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde' - this is what the Germanic leader shouts which means something along the lines of 'you contemptable dogs'. The whole scene is a reenactment of a Roman soldiers account of before and after a battle with a Germanic tribe and the exact translation is impossible to know as it hasn't been spoken in over a thousand years and very little was ever written down.

  • Haha great battle scene but the one thing that always annoyed me was the barbarians using ZULU war chants!! Did Ridley Scott really think he could get away with that?!!!

  • @BlackSabbathmad it isn't a Zulu chant.

  • @TrianosDellas /watch?v=nG3N5E1epAI

  • @ac3b1s iv'e seen a smililar comparison before, I would suggest to you that youtube videos are not where to educate yourself.

  • @TrianosDellas Its not about educate myself, i just think that Ridley Scott did a homage to one of his favorite "Zulu" movies. At last there was no germanic language because the german tribes was in the roman times never united and each tribe had is own dialect. There history is even never written down by themself, there are just roman sources but something that is way more important to me why the germans looks like caveman in this?

  • @ac3b1s it's pretty accurate how the Germanics are depicted in this scene, the problem is the public think cavemen looked like this.

  • @TrianosDellas Haha, what the hell are you on about? Ridley Scott himself has admitted that he loved Zulu and re-used the warcries in that movie. It's hilarious how pseudo-linguists here try to pretend to know that it's some ancient German war cry,

  • @DrCroccer Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde is Germanic numb nuts, the rest i couldnt tell you, i have heard that although used in the film, it isnt an actual zulu chant.

  • @TrianosDellas No shit, I was talking about the chanting the background which all the pseudo-experts declaring to be ''Unser Sieg'' or some bollocks like that, which is from Zulu. Without a doubt.

  • @DrCroccer you've watched a Ridley Scott interview and now you know ancient lingustics, give me a break, the translations I gave are 100% accurate, I couldn't give a fuck less where Ridley Scott got his inspiration from. I've seen Zulu a hundred times and without doubt he got the idea from there, calling someone a psuedo linguist does not discount the point.

  • @DrCroccer are you argueing that the chant is also in Zulu, which is clear for anyone to see, if you've seen Zulu that is. I don't get what your point is.

  • Would've been better if he screamed like Wilhelm...

  • "chinguen a su madre todos!"

  • theyactually speak french

  • This is exactly what I was looking for when I searched Gladiator Opening Battle scene

  • Makes the fact that the primary theme of the Nazi regime was Roman Paganism all the more ironic.

  • zulu chant

  • The shout/chanting was taken from the movie Rorkes Drift, I believe.

  • HE SAID IN GERMAN: "YOU WANT SOME HEAD?"

  • they said no

  • I don't know why they're speaking Modern High German when its ancestor (old High German) wouldn't even have existed yet. It would be like expecting these Romans to speak Italian instead of Latin. Very bizarre and ultimately historically inaccurate.

  • @theshitaIker he's not speaking high german. it just sounds a bit like "you are damn hounds" but it could be something else. afterall the actor is trying to sound like a german(ic) and it sounds good engougth to me in terms of historical corectness because the regiseur didn't need to be worried about the number of viewers with profound knowledge of diffrent german tribs dialects, right?

  • @swunt10

This is modern Hochdeutsch. I live in Germany and speak German, I should know.

  • @theshitaIker thats not high german. und ich bin echter deutscher. also lass mal gut sein mit den belehrungen.

  • lol so these are like ancient nazis?

  • @fightinside1 No. Are Germanic people. Who nowadays are the: English, Dutch, Germans, Scandinavians.

  • this old german is barely translatable, this aint no fucking german

  • Great film, but the war cry is a bit rip of the 1964 movie Zulu. As they sound exactly the same.

  • the second one sounds like "Ihr seid verfickte Hunde" = "You are fucking dogs" ^^

  • All Blacks vs Romans

  • GERMANS

Y U NO LET NEGOTIATORS ALIVE

  • This is actually African not Germanic. Ridley Scott took it from the film 'Zulu' he says so on the commentary

  • @TheInformalstyle The chanting is, the taunts aren't.

  • @TheInformalstyle

Only the yelling in the background is "African".

  • The warriors shown here spoke Proto-Germanic.

  • @DestroyerOfSense000 Yeah, indeed. Thanks for correcting me.

  • @SteinbrecherBack Gotta love people on Youtube who get emotional over some triviality. Why would it be ''Unsa Sik'' (it doesn't remotely sound like it, but whatever), in some Old German language, when the German guy clearly speaks in modern German? There are two videos about the subject actually. One titled ''War chants in 'Zulu' and 'Gladiator' '' and another one titled ''uSuthu nei film "Zulu" e " Il Gladiatore" '' (more in depth). The wiki of Zulu confirms the use of samples by Scott.

  • 1) "Du bist der Hund!" -" You are the dog!"

    2) "Das sind verfluchte Hunde!" - "those are damned dogs!"

    3) (crowd yells) "Unser Sieg -Ja!" - "Our victory - yes!"

  • @GurnySlunzok "ihr seid hunde" (you are dogs!) Ihr seid verfluchte hunde! (You are damned dogs!)

  • Actually he shouts "Ihr seid verfluchte hunde" which means you are damned dogs!

  • I think he said "hey! the horseman forgot his head!"... he was just trying to help :|

  • ulster no surrender!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • We needed no magic potion like Asterix. We defeated the Romans with our natural Power.

  • Okay, every German that claims to understand a germanic dialect.. a language that was spoken before German and english were even invented or devepoled is simply an idiot. No one here understands it.. it is propably made up by the filmmmakers. So let it go, freaks! Great movie though.

  • Jai ar shcikkeliii' forbanna..!

  • Comment removed

  • They tried to speak a ancient german language probably.

  • i am german

as the body of the negotiator was sent back...he said "Du bist der Hohn!"

which mean´s ... "You are the mockery!" Which show´s there contempt - no negotiation!

then he exclaimed a battle shout...which sounds like: "Der Sieg wird uns gehören!" in a dialect

    - Victory will be ours!

the army also shout the hole time: "Unser Sieg, unser Sieg!" in a dialect

    - our victory, our victory

the last i can understand sounds like norwegian: "jeg er skikkelig forbanna" it means "im so pissed"

  • @necob lol you talk crap :D

The background chant is a hommage of the Movie Zulu, Zulus are a african tribe and there is nothing of Unser Sieg....

The beginning is some middle german mixed with jibberish...if they would be accurate the would have to speak a proto or indo germanic language, its like one of the first germanic languages but there a no knownage about this time because germanic tribes cound´t write.. the only facts about them are roman sources..

  • @necob:

    he say hund =dog.

    not hohn.

"du bist der hund"="you are the/a dog."

  • @necob

WAAAAS? Der sagt gar nichts. Spiel dich doch nicht so auf! Altgermanische Dialekte wirst Du doch wohl kaum beherrschen!

  • @necob Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde

  • @necob That's funny! Because in the film Zulu, which was made in 1964, the Zulu's have the exact same war chant and they are definitely not German... Watch 'Zulu War Chants' about a minute in, then you will see that this film stole it.

  • @killamanz Very true. I'm a huge fan of "Zulu", and I recognized their war chant when I first saw this film. Well spotted.

  • @necob First: He shouts "Du bist der Hund" (You're the dog).

Second: He didn't pronounce well at all; the script read "Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde!" (You're damned dogs).

Third: ONE guy shouts "Unser Sieg" (our victory), the others respond with "JA!" (Yes... guess you knew that one :p); and it's not dialect at all, dude... What gave you that bloody idea?! o.O

  • @SteinbrecherBack Actually that ''Unser Sieg'' part is wrong as well. It's a zulu war chant from the movie Zulu, there's a video on Youtube which points that out. The guys actually shout ''uSuthu!''.

  • @DrCroccer @DrCroccer [sarcasm] Yes, that explains perfectly well why the vowels are u, a and i ("Unser Sieg" spoken aloud "unsa sik"). Why didn't anyone think of it that they gave some imaginary Germanic figure a Zulu word to shout... it's so OBVIOUS! [/sarcasm]

Also, what is this mysterious video that caught the makers saying it is what you claim it is?

  • @necob thats the biggest BS i ever heard lol

there is not one f.cking german word in the whole movie.

Einbildung ist aber auch ne Bildung! Man man man...

  • @necob You're wrong. What he said was... "Ihr seid verflüchte Hunde!"

  • @necob How many Germanic languages do you speak?

  • @necob

  • @necob haha its gibberish and the war chant of the germans is a Zulu Chat a african triebe

    /watch?v=nG3N5E1epAI :D

  • @necob I think he say's "Hund" and not "Hohn", meaning dog. So, "You're the dog."

  • @necob

It sounds too ''presently''. Slovenliness of producers - we know ancient Goths language and other old germanic dialects.

  • 12.000 yay xD

    <---gladiator fan sub me ;)

  • lol thanks for posting this, I was really wondering what movie that soundbite was from.

  • There really aren't enough movies like Gladiator, Thor, Kingdom of Heaven and Braveheart. They need to make more.

  • @Elmaln Braveheart, Kingdom of Gayness, and Thor all sucked. Gladiator is better then all of those.

  • @Colton5 I thought they were fairly good, but I agree that Gladiator was the best.

  • The background "Germans" are infact Zulus believe it or not... The soundtrack is a direct lift from the "Zulu" film...

  • Idsidyafulha auuuuujjjddnaaaa!!!!! --->for me, sounds like that.

  • lol pretty cool that someone actually uploaded this particular shot :D

That yell... for some reason, is so damn cool! No idea what he's saying but it sounds cool :P

  • germans at this time yell loud and aggressive to fear the enemy.

they do it because it works.

  • "Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde!" Recht hat er!

  • chips2150 is right.

It doesn't sound like ''Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde'' but like "Es sind verfluchte Hunde!"

  • Hiel Hitler? lolololol

  • The last yell is actually "Jeg er skikkelig forbanna" meaning "I'm very angry/super pissed" in english :P

  • @thheNO that sounds north germanic^^ norwegianlike. How much languages do these guys speak?^^

  • @GrauenausderTiefe: It's actually modern Norwegian :P

Seems like someone googled swearwords to this movie :D

  • It sounds like THOSE NIGGAS FUCKED MY HOOD MAN! Then I watched this clip.

  • To me (i'm german) he is actually saying "Es sind verfluchte Hunde!", which is correct. It's a simple impersonal remark stating that the (or all) romans are "damned dogs".

  • @chips2150 In the begining he yells ''do bista huuuuun'' Which resembles the Frisian ''Do bist een houn'' Or German ''Du bist ein Hund'' I love this fist scene. My ancestors in action;). To bad they get their asses kicked by little Italian dudes..

  • the most epic start to a battle ever

  • TYT army is too strong..

  • IM so happy germanic own the italian fagots .Im latin myself but ,just because those italian scums own in year 300 my peopl.

  • Ihr seid verfluchte hunde!!

  • Haha i got the TYT app and it has the soundboard with this on it hahaha

  • Please upload the entire scene.

  • @PhilipDK5800 ''It is acceptable, agreed?''

  • it`s a very flawed german, roughly translated, he`s saying: "you are the dog" in reference to the way romans depicted barbarians, and then again: "you are damned dogs"

just in case you want to know.

  • @picutocu89

How would you say this in modern day German? I'm curious.

  • @regelemihai It is modern German. It's incorrect (I think), because he says ''Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde'', instead of ''Ihr sind verfluchte Hunde''. The former is the affirmative (command).

  • @DrCroccer

    Interesting. Danke schon :)

  • Comment removed

  • @DrCroccer it's old German, not modern German. he says 'ir sit verfluchte Hunde' (meaning as noted before = 'you are cursed dogs'). the actor slightly mispronounces the 'u' which clearly identifies him as an English speaker, they virtually always make that mistake when trying to speak German. (pronouncing 'u' as 'ü' instead of 'oo')

  • @picutocu89

How would you say this in modern day German? I'm curious.

  • Love it!
