I understand the argument to get out of debt. But, I believe its more important to use debt (if available) to prepare for whats coming. If the SHTF paying back unsecured debt will not be all that important. I've spent $20K of credit to prepare. I figure the few thousand in interest payment I will have to make until I'm squre with the bank is worth the peace of mind I have right now.
I agree guys. You can't eat silver, but I believe we must also look at the economic collapse, and beyond it. What's to come after this collapse? I would still say invest in silver and gold because once the dust settles, something else is going to emerge that we might not like.
The economic is going down when it comes to big corporation business. Look all the sign that things are getting worse. The government making broking promise that they can't keep.
Don't trust metals, how about don't trust Denninger's insight on this topic. Its funny how he can't acknowledge that gold has served as money for thousands of years, especially during tough times.
Theres a few things you can trust. A well maintained firearm, dry ammo, and your food stockpile. I advise people to invest in that before they invest in anything else.
Human beings can last 3 months without hope, 3 weeks without food, 3 days without water, 3 minutes without air. Make sure you never run out of these things.
Also be able to be mobile, be in shape, have a Go bag, have MREs, water purifier, ect. The more you do, the more water and food you consume. Plan accordingly.
I agree, guns first. If push comes to shove you have to protect yourself above all else. The people who have food and gold will just get robbed unless they have a gun.

Well, they are going to have to borrow it again when the next big wave of adjustable rate mortgages reset. According to the ABA, the peak of resets is in 2010. Then you have all the states and municipals needing a bail out soon, Then you have the commercial real estate market problem. Demcad is telling the truth. You might want to clean your rose colored glasses.
Hey That's the same list that K. Deninger put out in a post on his forum. Market Ticker just a few days ago. It's a good list to follow if you have the money and resources to achieve it. If like me you only work part time, and can barely pay the current bills, then not much you can do. I have one weapon, and when TSHTF i'll use my training to move up from there.
Gold and Silver will always have value. But they should be 20% of your 20% that you're putting aside in the form of food stores, ammo, tools, soaps, deodorants, tin foil (not for hats), water purifier tablets, iodine tablets or liquid iodine, at least 1 year's worth of food, solar panels, solar charge controller, inverter, batteries, medicine, get a vacuum sealer right now and start sealing everything including your medicine and make sure that they're sealed with oxygen absorbers, oh, and guns.
I wonder wouldn't be wiser to save your money and invest in food, protection and things that you need to survive a crisis instead of paying off your debt? Like credit card debt and mortgages, if your mortgage is more than your home is worth of course. What good is a 700 credit score while you and yours are starving?
Yeah, just pay the minimum payments. Screw the Banks, they screwed us. They caused this downfall. The financial industry has exploded since the mid 1980's. "The largest ponzi scheme in history."
How could they have 1,000 trillion dollars of derivatives on their books. No one can even count that high. The banks invented this toxic crap and have gambling with our checking account and stock portfolio money for years. And, we all got royaly screwed.
I could use more options on number 10 and will work on that. I trust a few people but I want more.
My bank provides overdraft protection and I really like the online bill pay. 5 years ago I couldn't find a credit union that could match the services I get at my bank. I'll check again next week (during vacation).
It is partially true that gold and silver MIGHT not be useful in the beginning of an absolute collapse. After the first few days, weeks, or months an economic system of barter or trade will invariably crop up, no matter how bad the disaster, and gold and silver will be valuable then. But your food stores and other preps are supposed to help you through the transition. And don't limit yourself to gold & silver. Buy other barterable items like bullets, tools, even things like toilet paper.
7) CONTD - Learn to can what you grow. Purchase a pressure canner for your home in the Quart size. Learn to butcher and eat your chickens & rabbits. 8) Start building relationships and networks of support now, so that when things get bad youll have a social structure to fall back on and places to go where youll be welcome. ETC
5) Purchase camping supplies and survival items with water, fire, and shelter being your primary concerns. 6) Purchase large amounts of first aid equipment, including OTC medications of all types, and surgical tools. Make several portable first aid bags for your home & cars. 7) Learn to grow your own food without a lot of external inputs. Chickens or rabbits make good meat and leave fertilizer behind. Potatoes, Tomatoes, and Onions should be a first priority in terms of survival gardens.
1) Educate yourself Economics, Organic Farming, Natural Medicine, Outdoor Survival, and Self-Reliance in as many areas as possible. 2) Make Plans Plans to shelter in your home, plans to shelter in a secondary place, plans to shelter outdoors in a bugout situation. 3) Pay off all debts & start spending less than you make so that you can save 1 years worth of living expenses. 4) Change dollars to silver, gold, 1 to 2 years of food, barterable items (bullets, liquor, tools, etc..).
Gold and silver will be worthless when people are starving. Furthermore if the dollar falls totally no one in America will have enough goods to trade to be able to meet the demand. You will be better off stocking life saving and life sustaining items. i.e. food, water, medicine. Also plan for the worst case scenario you might have to grab your belongings and leave your home so tent sand camping equipment will might come in handy too.
Well, since I don't agree with the entirety of his list, it doesn't make sense for me to tell you what I've done and haven't done. Maybe I'll do a video giving you my top 10 things to do to survive economic collapse. Or maybe I'll give it in a text post too. Good video though.
It's a good broadly based list. Just amend it to your specific situation. I think No. 10 is the most important. If you don't have allies, then the rest does not matter. Whether we like it or not, we are in this together.
If the dollar collapses, what good will a big savings account be? I have enough to take care of most things that come up like if I need to do preventive maintainance on my car. It is comforting to have family I know I can count on in a pinch.
i have 1,3,5,6,8,9 ........as far as metals go , yes you cant eat metal coins but you sure as hell can barter with them , so that metal comment was quite ignorant on his part ! great video !!
I just lost my job so I will be into my savings pretty soon :o(
We can't carry weapons in the UK so it looks like its down to the garden tools should it come to that - I think I would prefer to befriend my neighbors than fend them off with a garden rake though!
There are a couple of things missing from the list:
11) start growing some food and stocking up on non-perishables.
12) prepare yourself mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally.
I agree with pwhitt0826, Mentally on track is #1. While the rest are in panic you will have a calm head and will be able to adjust to the problem. Just make sure you have a plan, because no plan is a plan to FAIL!
I would say the #1 thing to do is to prepare yourself mentally - that change is inevitable. Getting out of debt seems unreasonable for many - myself included- as how many of us own our home? How many can pay it off? How many can sell it?
Ya, it's pay as you go, until you get to health care, where the deficit can increase by trillions if necessary... Treasury bond rates are soaring and demand is falling. The dollar is dropping and oil prices, (which will quench any pretend recovery created by the warmer weather and stimulus plans), is rising.
Exports? Well they're down for a third month in a row. But who needs exports? Why actually make anything when you can consume your own limbs? Chrysler to Italy. GM to China. What the hell?
Good News! I just saw on CNBC that the recession is almost over. There was a headline on their website, :Dow Will Reach 12,000 By September: Strategist:" Im glad the economy is doing So much better. (sarcasm)
Russia is dumping the dollar, with China soon to follow. Make no mistake, this is the end for the USD. Get out of it while it's still worth something! SILVER AND GOLD! 1 Done 2 Easier said than done :( 3 See 2 4 See 2 5 Done 6 Done 7 Done 8 Highly disagree! Silver IS money. 9 Hmmm, good idea. 10 Many of my friends are asleep :( Good list but I can't agree to 8. I've seen no evidence to support the idea that silver and gold are bad ideas.
I'm still leery of more than 10 per cent. of the portfolio being in precious metals, but I'm very old-fashioned. I do agree, the dollar, the USD, is nowheresville. Did you hear about the big U.S. insurance company buying so much gold?
Yeah, big companies and governments are flush with precious metals, while the average person is holding worthless paper or electronic "investment". Worse than that, the average person doesn't even see it as a problem.
I've thought about buying a massive crossbow as that is about the upper limit of legal weaponry in Britain. I'd have to keep that a secret from the wife as she'll hit the roof. : )
I guess we can count on family for people to trust. Even if they are a pain in the arse. Blood is thicker than water and all that.
Outside family, I think I can only count on one friend, but I reckon most friends will help you out to a certain extent.
Having money reserves up to 2 years is way beyond me. I guess if there is a collapse like in Argentina, any money in your bank dissappears anyway. Thats why gold and silver coins at home are useful.
I've got 4 silver Britannia coins, 2 gold sovereigns and a 1kilo bar of silver. Not sure how long that'd feed my wife and I though.
Dmitry Orlov recommends buying tools as a means of having a trade and surviving in economic collapse. I guess I can do mechanics and repair stuff on my lathe.
as for number 5 what are we suppose to do put our money under the bed? This is happenening faster now and may not slow again. Sounds like you have 10 covered to me, if you have the slightest bit of doubt in a person go with the intuition.
what id like to know is where the hell is paul volker during all this? I thought he was part of the administration, we need to raise interest rates, unless what we all know is true, Obama is a nationaist modern day hitler. time for a bunker report lol
Lynchian - You are right and that is the basic flaw in many of these SHTF videos. If you are in debt, hyper-inflation, and all that "Wiemar Republic" stuff works to your advantage. The banks and debt holders would lose big time in that scenario. Most consumers who have debt would effectively see their debts reduced. That includes your fixed rate car payments and your 30 year mortgage. Only people with money in the bank worry about inflation eroding their spending power.
I like that protect yourself stuff. With it u can keep & get things. Also, re:flu, there is never a cure ppl! It always mutates in each person. No way to control a bio weapon unless u created it.
Friends must be like minded to yourself. Frankly, u probably won't have many, but few good are best.I think physical/mental wellness is hi on list of musts. must have community wit like interests.
Reg You better find a support group up there You might be on your own otherwise and I hate to think of what might happen. You are a good guy and people can do strange things when they get angry and desperate and take it out on other people. Take care buddy
I think having 6 mths $ is conservative rite now. We must get that 2nd job to save. Also, metal is high on list. Banks, insurance cos., countries are buying now. What does it mean? Get some! Thx Reg.
hummm... I wish we could over here in the Netherlands.. :P But we're not even allowed to hit the burglar that's coming to rob your house. You can even get sued for assault if you decide to hit/hurt him..
And interest rates could be rising quite soon. Just look at the yields for treasuries, they have gone up so much..
I don't know if the same is in for my country, but that sure wouldn't do me much good.
I don't trust anyone either. My husband is my best friend and trust him to a point. A man will hurt you, but Jesus will protect and love forever. No one will survive this collapse without adding Jesus to the #1 spot on the list. I can promise everyone that!
I agree Your going to need Jesus more than ever... the reason why we are going through this economic collapse is becuz this nation has forgot God and this is God judgment on this nation
This list is very similar from The Market Ticker. In regards to #8, I just purchased some metals not too long ago to preserve wealth. How can I not count on precious metals where it can preserve some wealth, up to the point of selling or exchaning metals for food, transportation, etc.? If hyperinflation occurs, at least the metal coins can come in handy as acceptable form of money. Deflation, is most likely not going to occur because our prices keep increasing every few weeks to months.

I believe the original author of "Ten Things You Must Do" is by Karl Denninger at the Market Ticker. Do a search for Market Ticker, then go back a few pages to his June 8th postings and you'll find the full article there.
He has a daily blog and radioblog every Monday. You might like following him because he has a slightly different take than Schiff, Faber, Rogers in that he thinks we'll have a deflationary depression and metals are not a safe haven. But he still thinks we're screwed.
I mean to say you might like following Denninger because he has a different viewpoint on some aspects of the economy, although he still thinks we're entering a bad depression. That doesn't mean I agree with him on the metals and the deflation aspect.
True, or so I've read. I think Denninger just has something against metals. But he's a daytrader (I am not). Most of his 2008 predictions were right, including the run up of the US dollar last fall.
Reginald your list has fatal flaws. #2 is wrong. #3 -- OK, what do you save your money in? Certainly not US dollars. #8 -- so exactly what ELSE can you count on?
Reginald you are good at reporting. When you venture into giving advice... I don't know.
The list comes from Karl Denninger at Market Ticker and Mr. Denninger despises gold bugs and metals. He has openly stated that investing in precious metals is ridiculous and he is a rabid proponent of fractional reserve banking. Despite all of that and being a staunch deflationist (with regards to the current economic crisis) he is pretty spot on.
>The list comes from Karl Denninger at Market Ticker
Oh my god. I loathe Denninger with a passion. That fellow has a very corrupt agenda. He wants the system to continue so his million$ continue being worth something. So that means
The biggest worry I have is the massive debt I am accumulating in grad school, if we get a serious depression, it would be hard to get out from under the debt.
I need to work on a lot of those points, if anything happens to my federal loans for school before I graduate, I'm screwed.
I say at least half of America have no savings and are struggling paycheck to paycheck with tons of debt they can really never get out of. So I guess a lot of people will not survive according to that list.
There is nothing people can do to avoid the tribulation that is coming. WE ARE IN A LOT OF TROUBLE !!! The demons will be running around and the so called elite will be hiding underground.
When the SHTF no one can be trusted. Even your next door neighbor, who is a swell guy, will not let his children starve. Best you own a gun. You must defend your larder.

Buy garden seeds. Sell them for silver when the time comes????
keithholden 2 years ago 2
Silver, as the usa dollar loses value, Americans will buy any thing that will hold value. Could be stocks in energy, And some will go into Silver.
As your wages get behind with inflation, you will beable to still buy food by selling some of your silver to those trying to protect there savings.
But also as people dive into silver and its prices rise hugely it will attract more buyers.
In the medium term silver will be great.
Longer term there may be no food at any costs.Garden seeds then.
keithholden 2 years ago
Gold and Silver will always have value. But they should be 20% of your 20% that you're putting aside in the form of food stores, ammo, tools, soaps, deodorants, tin foil (not for hats), water purifier tablets, iodine tablets or liquid iodine, at least 1 year's worth of food, solar panels, solar charge controller, inverter, batteries, medicine, get a vacuum sealer right now and start sealing everything including your medicine and make sure that they're sealed with oxygen absorbers, oh, and guns.

#8 doesn't say don't BUY metals, it just says, don't trust them to save your ass.
This is correct, put some money into metals, but don't necessarily bet your bottom $ that they will save you in the long run.
Only gold was illegal once, and it may be again. Put some money into gold/silver, but don't over-invest in it.
FurkDaJerk 2 years ago 2

A lot of people are commenting about whats the point of saving money if the economy collapses.
You have to look at odds.
The odds of you losing your job and not finding another one for 1-2 years is FAR FAR more likely than a US dollar collapse.
Prepare for both, but be realistic.
jonvssocrates 2 years ago

4) Change dollars to silver, gold, 1 to 2 years of food, barterable items (bullets, liquor, tools, etc..).
veritasfiles 2 years ago
Gold and silver will be worthless when people are starving. Furthermore if the dollar falls totally no one in America will have enough goods to trade to be able to meet the demand. You will be better off stocking life saving and life sustaining items. i.e. food, water, medicine. Also plan for the worst case scenario you might have to grab your belongings and leave your home so tent sand camping equipment will might come in handy too.

Some of the points on that list are right on...
Others, not really... but I guess it is subjective.
Basically, save food, ammo, and useful provisions.
Most people CANNOT buy gold and silver...I cant.
There is only so much one can do... Ammo, food, water, and alternate means of heat for Winters (I would say) are the most important items...

Yeah, big companies and governments are flush with precious metals, while the average person is holding worthless paper or electronic "investment". Worse than that, the average person doesn't even see it as a problem.

What;s the point in saving and clearing debt if the economy is going to collapse? You will lose your savings, but your debt would be wiped clean.
Lynchian74 2 years ago 4
Lynchian - You are right and that is the basic flaw in many of these SHTF videos. If you are in debt, hyper-inflation, and all that "Wiemar Republic" stuff works to your advantage. The banks and debt holders would lose big time in that scenario. Most consumers who have debt would effectively see their debts reduced. That includes your fixed rate car payments and your 30 year mortgage. Only people with money in the bank worry about inflation eroding their spending power.

But he still thinks we're screwed.
lloydmer 2 years ago
I mean to say you might like following Denninger because he has a different viewpoint on some aspects of the economy, although he still thinks we're entering a bad depression. That doesn't mean I agree with him on the metals and the deflation aspect.
lloydmer 2 years ago 2
Precious metals historically have done better during deflationary cycles.
patriotsundergod 2 years ago 2
True, or so I've read. I think Denninger just has something against metals. But he's a daytrader (I am not). Most of his 2008 predictions were right, including the run up of the US dollar last fall.

Freemarketeer81 2 years ago

Oh my god. I loathe Denninger with a passion. That fellow has a very corrupt agenda. He wants the system to continue so his million$ continue being worth something. So that means
