The Wal-Mart in Boonton, NJ tried to stop me from entering the store. After speaking with the corp. headquarters, I was assured it wouldn't happen again. It did! I spoke to the store manager and again was assured it wouldn't happen again. It did! Wal-Mart has a sign saying "Service Dogs Welcome" and yet 3x I was asked to leave. Guess my experience with Wal-Mart isn't an isolated incident.
Unfortunately, it takes being extreme in order for rights to be recognized. (Nobody told Rosa Parks that she had a crummy bus trip and to just let it slide!) It might seem like too much, but it's sometimes necessary to fight back in order to gain fairness. I'm lucky to live in a city with a resident that has a pit bull as a service dog. She is welcomed anywhere with smiles and it's always a joy to run into them in the store. She's like a service dog for the whole community.
It's not bad dogs, it's bad owners. Many German Shepherds have attacked people before. Dog fighting masterminds are doing nothing to help the breed's reputation. I'm glad Chloe is showing people that her breed is not agressive by nature. Hopefully, one day, the world will remove their bans and descrimination towards pitbulls.
Was taking prescribed therapy walk in public park with Black Lab service dog, via surgery in suffering limited mobility. I encountered overzealous cop after anonymous dog complaint. Cop wanted to know my extent of disability warranting dog; told cop “it’s nobody’s business via HIPAA” Cop demanded dog’s paperwork. I only produced Health Dept. rabies vaccination tag. Told cop: “dog is a service animal as my assistant”. Matter dropped when superior officer arrived while my Esq was on speakerphone.
@123dogtrainer- i said 95% because there are many sadistic people who train dogs to fight and kill. granted ANY of my dogs would hurt someone if they tried to hurt me (and yes i do have more than pit bulls tyvm. pit bulls are NORMALLY sweet, loving, loyal, goofy and just plain adorable but like ANY animal in the hands of a sadistic and emotionally weak person ANY animal is dangerous. ur nick on here claims that u r a dog trainer so u should know better than to make comments such as this.
Did she say "not your typical pit bull"?! Are you serious?! Now look who's discriminating!! Yes Chloe is "your typical pit bull!" -- smart loyal and loving just like all pitbulls are at heart. Give me a break already! That's why I can't stand the media! From what pitbull mom to another thank you and keep up the good work! And give Chloe and big hug and kiss for me :)
@hnybear385 That's what I thought immediately - your "typical Pit Bull" IS loving and friendly and loyal! My service dog is also a Pit Bull, and unfortunately I live in Colorado, although NOT in Denver, where they would confiscate and destroy her on sight, nor Aurora, where she is "welcome" as a service dog (according to Animal Control they are "in strict compliance" with the ADA), BUT she has to wear a muzzle at all times and be on a maximum 4' leash
@hnybear385 i noticed that too and yet this dog is your average pit bul. 95 % of them are goofy, sweet, loving, loyal and devoted. this is your average pit bull. the ones who attack are not the average. chloe is beautiful and represets her breed very well. i have 2 pits and they are so sweet and goofy. yet very gentle and loving. my female is a little more dangerous than the male (with her tail) so you do have to watch that c a pic of her on my profile
I really abhor pit bull discrimination! Choe is BEA-U-TI-FUL!!! I have an APBT and she's the best dog in the world. She LOVES children, dogs, cats, and EVERYONE!!! This ignorance needs to stop! Props to you for bringing up this injustice and for fighting it!!! My pittie sends kisses to Choe!!! Smooches to your pooches!!!
they should gave chloe a job there as a people greeter i'm sure she will do a fanastic job then that way people will have less reasons to fear pitbulls....
I was bit by a dog once (not a pitbull or any dog known to be a threat) that was deemed safe and yet the only dog I have ever liked since then was a pitbull as she was very protective of me. Makes for great dogs for people with disabilities and health issues. I am glad this recognition is putting pitbulls in a better light but also shining the light on discrimination in stores. It happens more than you think. I have seen it in other stores as well.
This is a loyal breed, so loyal that they will do what ever the owner asks of them, so the fault lies on the owner not the breed (in MOST cases).
This is the breed from early American Pioneer days. Took car of the family and assisted in hunting with the men. I had one about 10 years ago, the best friend someone could ever want. I miss her everyday.
Actually, this breed came over with the English and the Irish, and was already an established breed at that time. The breed was documented, including the breeds that went into its making, and was brought over by immigrants and went virtually unchanged in form and temperament to the present APBT. They went with the families in cities and farms and flourished due to their versatility, not so much as their innate ability to hunt/work a farm. Love the breed, not the fighting but dislike revisionist.
I feel like giving you a big hug for choosing to train an APBT as a service dog! It's always the Labs and the Golden Retrievers that get the praise. =/
Yay, go Chloe! I have a foster Rottweiler from a local shelter who I am training as a certified therapy dog and we have to go through similar things. >:-{ Pit bulls and Rottweilers both need great breed ambassadors these days!
Why exactly DO reporters have to say their names and the company they work for at the end of a story?? I never understood that. Is it really necessary?
YEAH! someone standing up for pitbulls and recognizing them for the wonderfull, intelligent, loving animals they are. I am proud to be owned by a rescued rottie, and I work every day to dispell the myth that they are "bad dogs". Peole are way to quick to judge, not just dogs, but other people based onj appearances.
Did someone fire the stupid/ignorant customer service manager, or are they just going to "review the policy"? That's their lame response for all their acts of stupidity in their stores. Fire the STUPID woman!
i hate pipol hu discriminates a dog, esp dogs who are mean looking but so gentle and sweet.. i just hate them and i frankly tell them this, "ever had a pitbull, before u say sumthin bad, start owning one first, lets see how foolish u are ryt now for ur words!" i have a rotty too. and sweet as an angel just like my many pitbulls...
and mc donalds needs to know it is against the law to discriminate too but mc donalds dosent and mc donalds needs to allow service animals in to their so called resturant it is against the law to discriminate and mc donalds is well known to discriminate close down all mc donalds fast food resturants for discrimination
It's WAL-MART. What do you expect? It's the trailer park of the American Retail Community. You think that people smart enough to work elsewhere would choose to work at a Wal-Mart?
it wasn't wal-mart but some dumb azz manager that doesn't understand the breed I own several pitbulls and would feel jsut as you all do about this the manager need to be punished not the whole store
look I allready had mc donalds shut down for descrimation i will have wal mart shut down for descrimation it is against the law to descrimate I do want to close down all mc donalds resturants for descrimation. wal mart is not allowed to descrimate its against the law we are all people we are all humans with feelings and should all be treated with respect do you understand
That's ridiculous. Because CHILDREN were in the store??? My dog has done nothing but run up to children and lick them-like many other pitbulls do!!!! If any pitbull is attacking anyone-its because they were TAUGHT to act that way.
Oh, right. An estimated 5 million pit bulls living in the U.S. While the vast majority are peaceful family pets, they are currently the most attractive breed to owners who have dogs for all the wrong reasons and subject them to the most appalling kinds of abuse, and yet fewer than a dozen a year, on the average, take their revenge through fatal attacks. THAT is their track record.
Wow that made me very disgusted. It shouldnt even have been an issue. The associate was ignorant, like so many others. I wish people would realize that pit bulls are a great addition to a family. I know mine is.
You had a bad experience with one store, and yes, you should complain and try to educate the ignorance. But, aking it into a huge internet thing, along with the whole "hate all of Wal-Mart" is too much. Every Wal-Mart, in my town where they're "used" to us and otherwise (like on vacations), has been helpful and understanding, save for one Sam's employee- corrected after speaking to the manager. (I've had *far* more trouble with fast food chains... they *never* inform their employees correctly!)
This is not a 'hate all walmart' - it's about ensuring legal treatment of those w/ service dogs. all over the nation are similar experiences - 8 open lawsuits against them (we're not suing). this is an opportunity for businesses & public to be educated and also a voice for pitbulls. Would a certain nationality person in a uniform asked to leave because they might rob the store or blow it up??! a pitbull in a service dog uniform being asked to leave because of their breed is COMPLETELY wrong
p.s. we tried the education with the 2 managers and even pulled in our service dog organization president -- they didn't care and said he needed to educate the public. so, that's what we are doing and also working with upper management
I have a yellow lab guide/service dog (yes she is both). I've had her since 2000, and I've had the most trouble with access to Wal-Marts accross Canada and the US than any other store or public place! If you ask any guide dog or service dog owner chances are a Wal-Mart somewhere tried to deny them access!
ack, see that's why i'm no good at stuff like this. if i were that woman i would have started a fight right there in the store, being as hot blooded as i am
FINALLY! Some good publicity for the APBT. Now if this could only be kept up for a while, maybe things will start to change. After all it is the news who pretty much controls everyone's opinions on Pit Bulls anyway. Maybe if they started saying nice things for a change, people would stop being so ridiculously close-minded and realize how wrong they were... Good job Chloe, and screw you ya dumbass Walmart employee!
@ThoughtlessCreations It's true, the media are the ones who cause the pits to have such a bad rap. A month ago a black Lab killed a little boy here in CO, but it barely made the local news; 3 weeks ago, some idiot let a stray pit bull into his house and it attacked his cat (it lived) but the NATIONAL news announced "Pit Bull Attack!"
