they helped a ton but I'm still somewhat lost since I'm not really doing covers more of original works but I guess thats where writing sheet music might come in handy anyway it helped to know some new effects and many different ways to make songs. especially since it's my job lol.
Thanks for the great tutorial, man. I was completely lost on how to even work with famitracker before but after seeing your video I'm more than half way done chiptuning a GB song by ear.
A successful cover achieved thanks to your tutorials mate, thanks a bunch. Hoping to utilise this knowledge for a game making competition next month :)
I did remake this song, and I'm hoping that I'll be able to get it up asap. Thank you so much for helping me out with this, knowing that this all seemed foreign to me, now I feel much more comfortable in knowing what I'm doing lol. Cheers :D
Thank you so much for posting these videos. they've been a big help. The only thing i'm really conufsed about is: When you made the intro to kraid's theme, how did you make it flow over all the blank spaces into the next frame. I have alot of empty space at the end of the first part of the intro and it just holds the last note for a fews beats before going into the next frame. Is there a way to skip the remaining empty part of the frame so it goes from one to the other without a gap?
Thanks a lot for the tutorial. The best part is in it, you covered the very song i would have covered first!! By far Kraids music is my favorite nes song and getting to cover it was just awsome. it came out perfect. I tried my best to do the notes by ear when i could, but went back to see the exact note when i would get stuck. I'll cover a few more songs and then start making my own original songs and such. Thank you again!! Looking forward to seeing more of your work!!
please help me, I made a cover of "Battle of the Holy", in famitracker it sound fine but when I export it into a .NSF or ROM it sound all glitchy , I used the konami VRC6 chip , Why it sound weird ..... it my first time whit famitracker :( and I failed :,(
This is the first video tutorial I found on the subject of chiptuning of any kind. It really helped to demystify a lot of the concepts just to have a guided session, and places to look for more information. Thanks!
Nice tutorial! Learning the basics of using Famitracker (i'm a total noob about this and never used any tracker or sequencer before now) following your guide was intuitive and fun. Thanks a lot! ^^
Great tutorial, But my question is, Why would you do a cover of a song thats exactly the same as the original? Isnt the point of a cover to make your own Variation of the song?
@OTNAKR2 The point of the cover in this case is to be as precise as possible so you can learn how to use the software and how to use various techniques that will allow you to make decent sounding original music.
@8BitDanooct1 thanks so much but i want to make a video responce and how did you record off of your computer screen or do you know how to record the NSF sound into a mp3 format?
The key you provided for file download was invalid. This is usually caused because the file is no longer stored on Mediafire. This occurs when the file is removed by the originating user or Mediafire.
If you believe you have reached this page in error, please contact support.
2. Is it possible to make frames with different amount of rows? I try changing an intro frame to just 8 rows (where the others are 32) but it changes all frames as well, is this avoidable?
Your tutorial is amazing. Thank you! I posted my video in response, but unfortunately it just has a static picture because camstudio doesn't like me >_>
Hey, I just started using Famitracker. I have a good idea how to make songs, but there's only one problem. The notes are just sustained and there's no way to cut them off. I even tried using the 'Note Cut' button on the notes, but it does no good. Is there a setting or something where the notes will be staccato and will not sustain unless I need it to? Thanks!
Did it all! Seems so much simplier now that you've explained it all, not at all overwhelming as I'd expected it to be - and also great song choice!
Just one question though: What software do you use to capture the footage? Is it a camera like you do for you DOS viruses or do you use something like hypercam?
Great tutorial! With other tutorials I didn't get this program, but now I do! One question though: with the Konami expansion chip, can instruments be of higher quality or do you just have more of them?
Question though: how did you record the tracks into audacity? Is there a way to record sound coming directly from the sound card, or did you have to do microphone-to-speaker nonsense?
your tutorials are so great! Man! I have to say you have a real nack for counting the beats in the measure and knowing which notes go for each beat in the measure. Did you take ear training and rhythm classes?
I'm still a little slow at picking up on whether a beat is held for a single beat or more, or if I just have the speed for the whole track incorrect. I'll try covering some of my favorite songs before I try to make my own original nes tracks. (which is a little daunting to get started on)
I've made a few original tracks, but I mostly like to do covers/remixes. You can check out some of the original stuff by searching my channel for my songs Abysmalaria and Flood Man. I generally just write what I hear in my head, I don't bother with writing things out in another medium before diving into the tracker. I played piano for five years and cello for seven years before taking up the tracker, and love to play songs by ear, so that most certainly helped a bit. Above all, practice.
How did you get audacity to record the sounds from VirtuaNSF? I've tried switching my audio input devices to 'wave out' or 'stereo mix' or whatever, but I don't seem to have the option in vista.
@Witzind In VirtuaNSF (or in any other NSF program) you should be able to mute all the channels that you don't want to play, and then export the sound as a wav file. You can then do this with all of the channels you want to solo and compile them in Audacity. Makes it much easier, and doesn't require time wasted due to recording, and then trying to get everything to line up.
I don't know how to play any instruments but I love music and new rhythms and beats play in my head all the time. FamiTracker finally seems to be the program simple enough for me to use in order to make my creations come alive. And your tutorial was excellent in helping me get started. Thanks so much!
Great tutorial, I am wondering how you got low to the c-1 notes, most I got was c-3 to c-5(or whatever is the highest.)
Also how can you tell what notes the target music is giving off? like taking a audio file and go 'that is a e-2' or whatever. lots of practice most likely?
Granted I barely started to take a interest in making music and do enjoy the 8bit sounds.
thanks very much this was really helpful and i think i posted my video response even though its not showing up. If its not there search "Zelda: Song of Time 8 bit"
I always thought there were some fancy things I was missing... I actually knew everything I needed but never knew that I already had the power that I needed.

I really enjoyed this tutorial. Just one question, do you have any tricks for getting the right instrument sounds? Like earlier you said that the pitch thing was used for Megaman's drums. How did you figure that out?
Thanks for the tutorial. I didn't get it perfect, but it's pretty damn close and your explanations are pretty good. I feel like from here I can start making original stuff pretty soon.
Great tutorial; when I first looked at the software, (earlier today) I had no idea what to do, but the tutorial cleared it all up. Thanks a bunch for the tutorial!
Thanks for the tutorial!! I'm defiantly going to try and remake some more classic NES songs then move onto converting newer music to NES then original stuff.
Loved your tutorial, made a lot of sense and was easy to follow. Been making 8-bit for awhile but always used lo-fi vst's in FL Studios. Now i feel ready to concur to the tracker realm. Keep it up
Thank you for writing this tutorial, but how exactly do you make the dash to cut off the note like you did at 4:58? It's the one thing I don't know how to do...
@GreenTeaAT8 You can set up a note cut by setting a key for it in the configuration of Famitracker. Just go into settings and choose what key you want to use.
Awesome work with this tutorial. I've been working with FamiTracker for quite some time now and know how difficult it is to explain, but you do a great job. Your covers are also extremely accurate, even in the more complicated Mega Man songs, which is where I start to have trouble.
My favorite game is Castlevania III, which feels like it has the most complicated instruments. I feel like I've gotten so close, but there's some kind of odd vibration going on that's neither vibrato nor tremolo that I can't seem to figure out. Would you be interested in looking at it? You seem to be able to catch every small detail about instrumentation and this has been bothering me for a while, but I can't seem to find anyone who cares as much. :P Keep up the good work!
@coasterkrazy90 I've actually had designs on covering the song "The Beginning" from Castlevania III, but never got around to it. It actually sounds pretty daunting to me, but I'll gladly take it on as a challenge after I finish up Mega Man 9's OST. Thanks for the kind words.
@8BitDanooct1 That's awesome! Thanks. I may try completing a cover of Clockwork I was doing as an instrument test. It seems like the vibration is some sort of feedback on certain notes that actually does occur once the FTM is exported.
Hey man, I love chiptunes, but stuff like this and Fruity Loops confuses the heck outta me. I watched all 5 parts and now I understand Famitracker a little better so thank you so much! Great tutorial and my song sounds just like yours but I cant upload a vid response so Im sorry about that :/ But hey man, thanks so much!

P.S. Thank you for picking a good song to cover! :D

This tutorial helped a lot. I would post a video response, but my pc is too crappy to record without lagging video or audio.
