What really gets to me is the hypocrisy of religious people who have no problem whatsoever with reaping the benefits of science when it suits them to do so, while at the same time rigorously denying and suppressing any scientific progress that might challenge their beliefs. I don't think you can have it both ways. Why do these people use electricity, drive cars, and happily benefit from other modern conveniences?
The part @ 10:24 is totally ridiculous! The genes won't propagate in the wild because of the tendency to revert to the mean. It takes energy to copy genes. If these genes do not directly help the propagation of the organism, it will be be overwhelmed by wild-types in competition for resources. I agree with the need for caution, but let's make sure that it's based on facts and not unreasoning fear. Now I am surprised they didn't go into how they IMPROVED insulin (Novolin). Maybe next time?
What the heck is that supposed to mean? God is not an entity or a being or anything. How can we play 'God' then? We might be playing with Nature and it's genetic underpinnings but why invoke this God fellow in the prose?
@saxmanchiro " Playing God" well you can also play super hero, you can also tell ghost stories, you can also write fiction, it's a term used because it fits well with the culture. darwin was criticized by some as the man who killed god, killing god as in making him unnecessary for explaining life. Ignorant people truly believe in god, because they don't understand how science works.
@Tethloach1 I understand what the authors are invoking here but whenever scientists use the term, they are falling into the usual cultural trap and placate the delusional 'herd'. It reminds me of when the Genographic Project directors used 'Adam' and 'Eve' as African ancestors in East Africa around 60k yrs ago. This, in my opinion, should not be done anytime we are explaining the evidential facts of science.
@saxmanchiro Hmm, operating an x-ray device could be called "Playing Superman" while Superman doesn't really exist, right? So, the "concept" of a god exists and it's okay to use that, even for scientists/atheists...
Before the understanding of DNA innocent people died incarcerated....centuries and centuries of prayers that did nothing and then science discovers DNA and you hear every few months on the news an innocent person was released from death row or something.
I imagine theists say god gave us the knowledge of DNA,,,,but wait I thought he was returning soon
@wideosvatcher Yep. The science of DNA and population genetics has done a lot for the advancement of Justice with the Innocence Project. But I must guiltily admit, I get my schadenfreud on when watching Maury: "You are NOT the father!"
"Playing God"... in the absence of any god, someone to do it.
