Love the poem by Taylor Mali. He is one of my favorites. Not a fan of the video. Too choppy with the spurts of text and a lot of quick image changes. Not my cup of tea.
I wish I could have had a teacher like this in school. As a gifted girl with ADHD I was stuck in a place where I understood the material quickly, then tuned out of the conversation for the rest of the day. No teacher cared enough to offer any supports or understanding of my difficulties, educational or emotional. I say emotional because recess was constant bullying. Everything I have learned was in spite of my teachers, not due to them. Teachers like Mr. Mali are one in a million.
I completely agree with all of this, sadly most elementary-high school teachers are not like this. I spent my entire elementary to high school career bored out of my mind, not because the teachers were boring but because I was forced to learn in the exact same way that everyone else learned and that wasn't enough for me. It was too slow and it held me back. I never learned how to study because nothing in High School was hard enough to make me study.
I'm studying to be a middle/secondary school biology teacher (6-8th is my preference) and this.... I don't have words. Thank you for putting it up so I could hear it for the first time. Thank you.

@TheMauveDart the last sentence is edited as well, the original says I make a G** D*** Difference, now what about you? -so although your views on censorship are appreciated, the fact is that the original is out there if any kid actually wanted to look it up. The way @Gleekin has put this together allows this very important message to be broadcast to a wider range of audiences!
@jackareis I understand what you're saying and I understand that @Gleekin got permission to edit this from Taylor Mali, it just annoys me that we have to edit this wonderful piece of art for students instead of allowing them to hear the original and maybe teaching them something. I do not believe in censorship.
Fabulous. I am sharing this with my son's school teachers. I think the edit is appropriate for a Teacher to show in school. It is disrespectful for any teacher to use any cuss word, no matter how unoffensive it may seem to most. Thank you!
GUYS. He censored the word 'ass' for a reason. He already said that he edited it so that he could shoot it to his students without being fired, he had permission from Taylor Mali (The guy who wrote the poem) to make this video. So shutup and stop acting like you know shit.
Hi. I am the one who edited the video. I got permission from Taylor Mali himself to create a video I could shot to my students without being fired. He was all for it. So this is an author-sanctioned edit.
@Gleeekin I completely appreciate that you care enough about the minds you teach to ask for permission to edit. I do not see this as shutting down an artist or a poet as you have not burned the orginal. For those who are concerned with an author-sanctioned edit, they simply need to push another button to watch the original version :-) You've done a wonderful job! I thank you for your heart toward your students!
@Gleeekin Thanks. I've been posting his original version on FB off and on for about a year now and appreciate this version sans the middle finger - the fist still drives home the point. Thanks again for the edit - it's superb.
Really? Can't say ass-kicking with the ass? And showing a fist, as in "give them a fist" seems likes he's actually threatening violence, as compared to flipping the bird, which is just, well, flipping the bird. Meh.
The 52 who "disliked" this are either the pedants ranting (below) about an infinitesimal edit, or they were the schoolyard bullies at their school. I love it. I am going to make all my friends watch it. The original is probably also good (haven't seen it) but the graphics on this version are brilliant.
I love Taylor Mali so much. And this is a very nice presentation, but I hate that you censored it. I mean, it was just ass. Censoring poets and writers and history is one of the greatest injustices committed toward children.
@TheMauveDart : I agree with you. The censorship screws with the intent, denudes the meaning and wordplay of "asking" and "ass-kicking". Also, in a separate instance of censorship, the finger is what what you give when "you give them this", not a clenched upraised fist (as depicted in the video). I don't believe the increased exposure of the poem and the poet to a new audience, if any, is worth the censorship.
@TheMauveDart (cont'd from previous reply): I don't know whether Taylor Mali approves of this treatment. I'm viewing it for the first time today, 1/3/2012, it's been here since 7/11/09, and I'm not making time to search through years of comments. But since one can see Mali present the full poem himself at youtube.com[slash]watch?v=RxsOVK4syxU I don't think an audience that insists on this censored version experiences this poem. They get a diluted one. Maybe that's all they deserve.
@slithytove2 While it may not be the most important thing right now, censorship is a big issue. Where does is stop? I agree that there are many other important issues, but censorship is important as well. I see that the maker of this video contacted Taylor Mali and he gave the okay to edit his work in this fashion but the fact that we have to worry about something like this instead of focusing on the meaning and magnitude of what Mr. Mali is saying here is the problem.
I like it but I giggled a bit when I saw the "I make 'em" part right after the whole spelling, writing, reading part...as if English is so important but you follow it up with " 'em ", instead of 'them'. No big deal, just funny.
Good message, but how can we censor Mr. Mali's material? I find this cowardly. I hope so much for your cause, but you've given up before you can get started.
Take off the kid gloves. This gentleness is part of the problem.
As a teacher who has faced that question I love this poem.
I also like when people ask me what I teach I teach children. What I teach to them is math, science, social studys, reading, health, language arts. But I teach children.
By his use and examples in Webster's, "Make" is directly interchangeable with "force"
A voice of history recalled being "taught that my highest duty was to help those in need" but added that he learned this lesson in the context of the importance of "obey(ing) promptly the wishes and commands of my parents, teachers and priests, and indeed of all adults.... What ever they said was always right." Rudolph Hoss (Google his accomplishments)
Thank God for teachers !! That is not my profession by trade, but I do it ever day of my life as I volunteer in sharing my knowledge with people of need. I LOVE people who need people, I think they are the most beautiful people in the world !! If everyone that could share would share there ability to change the world, the world would be a better place for it. Thank you for the time you gave me to express my opinion on what a teacher means to me !
I understand that this edit is intended for a conservative audience, but censorship and poetry really don't play well together. That's our public education system for you. :P
ha i had to watch this in a teachers class her name is Ms.petty and she plays by the honesty and ass kicking rule 8) ha im probably going to show this to her too so yea....told u so 8)
@selimulla9 The public education system is driven by a FEAR of FAILING, rarely by the desire to learn. Students are a captive audience for seven hours a day, and then for most of the night while they do homework. There are very intelligent students who struggle with school for one reason or another, including learning disabilities. No, you can not make a student learn if he or she doesn't want to; it depends on a teacher to help that student want to learn.
@ewold86 You obviously have never worked in the school system. It doesn't matter what the children already know. Swearing is not something the teacher just haphazardly decides is or isn't allowed in their classroom. It's a policy that can very easily get a teacher fired or sued for breaking.
Where are the teachers that believe and follow this credo? I miss teachers like this.
-We're here. Its hard to tell, though, since we are so bogged down with everything not related to teaching a class. We're here, and we still care. The real question is where are all the kids and their parents who care?

Ok komrade, master of nothing! Socialist. (condensed response) Those who cant, teach. Teach about others research, accomplishments, experiences! Again stick to teaching from a book written by a doer, LOSER! Great at name calling and blaming others for your failures! What a fraud you are on so many different levels. Have a nice day.
@frankf150 'Comrade', not 'komrade' (come on, youtube even uses spellcheck!), 'Other's research', not 'Others research', as the research belongs to someone. 'Again, stick to' instead of 'Again stick to', as it's a natural pause in speech. The next sentence needs a subject at the beginning in order to be a proper sentence; at the moment it doesn't make sense. Learning to write well in English will make you sound more intelligent and will mean more people listen to your views.
@snoopy19912005 actually, it would be others', not other's, as the lack of an "an" prefix (i.e. "another's research") indicates the poster was referring to several people's research, in which case the grammatical incorrectness of pluralizing with an s when the word ends in s already forces the writer to add only the apostrophe. OP was still wrong, but if you're going to be a grammar Nazi, at least know WTF you're talking about.
@frankf150 My parents are both teachers, and spend more time with the children than the children do with their own parents, so the majority of what they learn between right and wrong is down to their teacher's influence, and what their teachers teach them . They have had many students thank them. The most important job is the education of the young. Without teachers, who would educate the 'doers' such as presidents and doctors?
Funny. Talks about all the mundane achievements except helping USA students perform better than 28th in the world in education! What an free loading public serving asshole!!!!!!!!!
@frankf150 : Maybe, just maybe, American kids are 28th in terms of how involved their parents are, and 28th in terms of how much time they spend reading and studying, and 28th in terms of how much parents support teachers, and 28th in terms of keeping violence out of schools. I know America is supposedly "Number One", but that is just a slogan.
My mom is a Special Education teacher and a single mother. Shes is the braves person I know and she taught me that someone in Special Education is NOT a retard. Just because they act different doesn't mean there not human. She is the reason I believe in myself and I stand up for the people getting pushed around. She made me who I am today. I Love You, Mom.
Many of the things that teacher did should have been done at home by the PARENTS!! What we need in this country are more PARENTS who give a shit about their children.
The most important thing here is that what we make does not define the quality of our contribution to society, only society's skewed view of what it thinks is contributed, because society currently measures success in terms of profit. And if anyone thinks profit is the best way to measure success, then I have only to ask them what they think that money is for.
Actually he makes anywhere between $40,000-60,000 on median depending on the state and level he teaches at. I would assume elementary since he teaches math AND english so approximately $45,000
@Driggnasty7 I have been teaching 15 years, have a Master's degree PLUS, and still am no where near the top end of that figure. Where else in the public sector can you have that much education, matched with that much job-related experience, and make that little...............NO WHERE!!!!!
@regitchr Haha I agree sir (or mam). The system GREATLY underpays teachers who are some of the most intelligent people on the planet. I have considered being one myself because its rewarding I just wish more money was to be made.. Maybe real estate during the summer? (not in this economy) (a full time job with your degree, no one will hire for 3 months) its unfortunate. Im finishing up my undergrad this year and will figure out what to do after!

OVER-PAID is what you make! Average American works 254 days a year yet you work even less then 180 with your time off. You have TENURE, as if ANYONE deserves TENURE & you may even get "Longevity" built into your pay. Yet you fight "Merit-Pay" Still you wonder why oh so many say you are over-paid! You make more then the rest of the worlds teachers yet our students are by far not the "top of the class" You, your words & your "power-trip" attitude sicken me.
@askdafl Those are the teachers who DID become teachers because they couldn't "do." Unfortunately there are those out there too. It isn't a job one can just slide into as a "backup" or as something to pay the bills until they get to where they want to go. Too many people fail to see that one may be good at teaching in the literal sense, but if one isn't completely passionate about it, then the kids suffer, as you have clearly experienced. I'm sorry that's happened to you. :(
I originally studied to be a teacher, but I decided not to when a parent threatened to kill me for patting his son on the shoulder. Now, I'm studying to be a lawyer; sure, I'll still get plenty of people threatening me, but at least I'll make a lot more. I have a tremendous amount of respect for teachers out there, especially the males, who could have gone the high-paying route like me, but took the noble calling despite being harassed by ungrateful, paranoid parents.
You ruin it by trying to censor it. He says a few swear words and if ur old enough to understand the poem, your old enough to hear the word "god damn"

They censored it so it can be used in a classroom. So yes, it did have to be censored.
SpontaneouslyRevived 5 months ago 2
@SpontaneouslyRevived why? do you think there are any children that don't know these words??
ewold86 5 months ago

Have a nice day.
frankf150 5 months ago
@frankf150 'Comrade', not 'komrade' (come on, youtube even uses spellcheck!), 'Other's research', not 'Others research', as the research belongs to someone. 'Again, stick to' instead of 'Again stick to', as it's a natural pause in speech. The next sentence needs a subject at the beginning in order to be a proper sentence; at the moment it doesn't make sense. Learning to write well in English will make you sound more intelligent and will mean more people listen to your views.
snoopy19912005 5 months ago

You should think about that.
snoopy19912005 5 months ago 17
Funny. Talks about all the mundane achievements except helping USA students perform better than 28th in the world in education! What an free loading public serving asshole!!!!!!!!!
frankf150 5 months ago

Thumbs up if you have someone like this.

Last year, my study hall teacher played this video...my view of alot of teachers changed...SOME actually care.
LippSmakkerrz 6 months ago
Actually he makes anywhere between $40,000-60,000 on median depending on the state and level he teaches at. I would assume elementary since he teaches math AND english so approximately $45,000
Driggnasty7 6 months ago
@Driggnasty7 I have been teaching 15 years, have a Master's degree PLUS, and still am no where near the top end of that figure. Where else in the public sector can you have that much education, matched with that much job-related experience, and make that little...............NO WHERE!!!!!
regitchr 6 months ago
@regitchr Haha I agree sir (or mam). The system GREATLY underpays teachers who are some of the most intelligent people on the planet. I have considered being one myself because its rewarding I just wish more money was to be made.. Maybe real estate during the summer? (not in this economy) (a full time job with your degree, no one will hire for 3 months) its unfortunate. Im finishing up my undergrad this year and will figure out what to do after!

As a teacher, thank you.

Prefer the uncensored version. I think teachers are adult enough to handle it. Nice typography though.

@GDTRFB63 You are an idiot. You need a few teachers.

@GDTRFB63 Tenure is one of the hardest things any educator can earn.

@GDTRFB63 You need to read more books. And research the concept of tenure. You just sound like an idiot who likes to hear themselves talk.

OgrAdaY 8 months ago
@OgrAdaY - I'm not sure your teachers didn't care. Maybe sometimes there are simply other more important battles to fight in the classroom.
richardredic 6 months ago
@askdafl Then by all means, STOP WHINING.
1notyourmum1 8 months ago
