Beautiful. Thank you. It's made me reconsider getting one. A friend had some in her shed and, as I sat on the floor, one launched at my face and bit my chin. It held on and drew blood. I think she was just rubbish with them and they were scared but it's left me very nervous. I can be in a pen with a huge, nervous rottweiller and handle it perfectly but put me in with a ferret or gerbil and I freeze up, lol. She's gorgeous though!
Oh I really hope that you do. Did you know, I've NEVER been bitten by a ferret and I"ve been involved with them for over 30 years. They are the only animals that I know who wont' turn on you if you accidently hurt you! But as you said ... if they are raised very wrongly ... very diff story. I understand the fear, really I do. I saw a McCaw bite my husband when we were first married, and to this day ... I just cant' seem to bring myself to pet them. Ferrets are such awesome pets.
Yes they can. Usually nearly 99% hit rates in their cages if you use the right liter, pan, and set up the cage right. Outside the cage, not so much. Some are great, some are terrible. Confined to one room, you can usually get them to do very well though. They at least go "next" to the pain when they do miss lol. The trick is putting the pans where "They" want to go in a room.
I look forward to going through all of your vids. Glad to have discovered you. I've never known ferrets as pets. What are they related to? I'm thinking of getting a chinchilla which is a rodent.
Hi ya! They are very popular pets. Perfect temperments. But hi maintenance (lots of scooping and cleaning, and vet bills as high as a dogs). They are a mustelid. Related to weasels, mink, fishers, polecats, etc. They EAT rodents lolol. Chinchillas can be really neat from what I understand and if you give them lots of time, they can be very nice. Ferrets are naturally tame/domesticated. Chinchillas are technically wild. :) But very sweet when given the time.
Yah, dat poor ting. Lol. She was neutered. She is skinny and almost died. Click on "More" under my description, and you'll find a link to the movie that shows where she came from. It was a mass 1000 ferret rescue here in the states. Very sad ... But because of tons of caring people, it all ended up okay.
As far as "biting". A pet ferret who has never been abused, or neglected, or bounced home to home and has been bred well should never bite hard enough to break skin and they should never hang on and shake. A normal ferret, in fact, would DIE before ever biting someone that hurts them! Very unlike a cat or dog. They never ever bite to get out of a dangerous situation or to scold you. If they bite its not being trained or fear This is what I like about them. I mean I can trust them with people.
Haha, I love the way she gets really excited and jumps everywhere, and when she digs her head in that sand box thing. XD Does it hurt a lot when she's play biting you? I've owned a lot of small mammals but not ferrets, I'm not that confident with them because people say they bite a lot. Is this true or just over exaggerated?
It's like their mouth is their hands. So many of them mouth contantly. Some are quite rough, but never scratch or break the skin or hang on or anything. This one was unsocialized so she is rougher than normal. Some older ferrets choose to rarely ever mouth you. But most will. Babys can really nip hard. They have sharp teeth and like puppies are teething and learning what is too hard and not too hard.
Meeka came in very skinny, and runty even months after rescue. Her canines were ground down from her chewing the wires of her cage trying to escape on the farm. Aging by experienced people and a vet put her at around a year old. When she finally settled in a real home, with a little TLC she grew a lush, white coat and gained a ton of weight. But something else happened. Shew grew! A lot! She was just a baby. No doubt she wouldn't have lasted much longer there.
Did you see the link to the video of that farm in my description? omg, it was sick, sick sick. Many of the animals came through here, and the ferrets would "dig" their water from having to dig the ice just to drink.
I did see it, and it broke my heart. When you say that many of the animals came through "here," what do you mean? Just knowing that you have Meeka now makes me so happy. She's such a bundle of adorability.
I was, and continue to be, a little "way station" for tranports. People stop here, they get showers, food, sleep, and I try to help give them a little break with the care of the critters who have to stop and get excercise, etc. I had like 20 come through here. We were up til 3am cleaning and letting them out to play 2 at a time (they fought). Can you imagine only several people caring for the hundreds those first weeks?? I can't. Shew
Wolfy, This video is a real tribute to this little girls joy in her new home. As always, your choice of music is so appropriate for expressing Meeka's joy and happiness. Keep up the great work and enjoy this little one.
OMG what energy! ENDLESS ENDLESS! love it! haha... my woozlies don't play like that much anymore... they have little spurts of crazy and then they look for nasty hidden things to do. :) So cute. It brightened my day. Thank you for sharing.

She inspires me! Lol. But not as much as the people who actually did all of the hard work in saving them.
