The tuning for the cadets is probably the best in my view...Other DCI corps drop the 5th way to low and just sounds messed up. Cadets 5th sounds orgasmic + 1st + 2nd bass kick some serious Spongebob Ass.

There is just something about the Yamaha basses I do not like. Even the Cavaliers with a master bass drum tuner in Jim Casella could not get a great sound. Bluecoats have come the closest. All this having been said all those corps basses play well, and this part by the Cadets is illegally awesome. |

@Inspadave The tuning of these drums is amazing, but it's that ring of foam around the edge of the drum head, that mutes. That's why the sound it 'punchy'. There are several different ways you can use this foam to get many different types of sounds. They mute the entire head, other ways only pieces in certain places. It's all up to the drum instructor/Band Director

@FTWknob Dude, I am not new to the marching percussion world. I would venture a guess that I aged out long before you started playing. I know exactly what the foam is for. I use it with the line I teach. I put my foam on the inside and up against the shell. It is also slightly out from the edge of the drum so that when the head is tensioned it pushes down on the foam. It works very well because most of our performances are indoors.

This is what I believe is wrong with a lot high schools that begin teaching marching bass drum. They think that this is the drum they should start on. When they first starting learning drumming they usually play on a snare learning matched grip. Every individual snare plays the exact same part as each other on one drum. It is completely different for bass drum. As far as quality and touch, that should be the same regardless of which instrument you play. In fact, it's more noticeable on bass.
