I don't know! some people run down one player or the other!
every player has his or her way of playing and its what ever you were lucky to be born with to be able to do with what you have. every one has a style Just like Bill Monroe and I met and talked to him many years ago he was my idal since a kid.
Just enjoy the music and enjoy what the player have to give to us thats all.
@madbutcher1986 I disagree : ) Bring back the bluegrass. Next Punch brothers album, I think they should stray from the"Radiohead-esque" stuff. People say they 'get' the Punch Brothers stuff but I think they're just hipsters being hipsters, but they like what they like
thile is hands down the best mandolin player of all time, and if you cant see that then your blind, this guy is an amazing composer and can play over 40 instruments!!! and to say hes too this or that or that these other two guys are just as good is absurd idk why poeple hate on thile he is the friggen bach of our time!! but hey i guess people are entitled to their opinions
Looking at O'Brien's solo especially, he was very deliberate in emulating the tone and feel that Bill would have played. Like beranbr said, Thile was doing his own thing.
@jazzfolkrocker but let's be fair...Chris ALWAYS plays over the top like that. he ALWAYS squeezes everything he can out of his instrument. this had nothing to do with attention seeking if that's what you were implying. i'll agree that O'Brien's solo was more inline with Monroe's style though...but then i beg the question, why recreate what has already been?
@ryan7ryan Don't get me wrong; I really enjoy Chris Thile's music. But this tune, as implied by Tim's preface, was played explicitly on the premise of demonstrating Bill Monroe's style, was it not? In this case, Thile wasn't on the same page as Tim and Ronnie. That's all I meant by the comment.
If you would like to see the Master and the Student, check out all the videos of Chris Thile with the true old master, Mike Marshall. Just search on both names.
There is more to music than notes. A classic example of this is the duets of Yehudi Menuhin and Stepane Grappelli from some years ago. It isn't who is best, who can play fastest or even whose licks you like the best, it is how wide a spectrum you can enjoy. Besides, none of you have heard the very best mandolinist of the past 30 years. Todd Phillips!
@Jack458111 Thile did not out play the "other guys" as you call them, he simple played a different style than Tim O'Brien and Ronnie McCoury. Ronnie can play just as good as Chris can, I honestly think Thile was trying to make everyone think he was better by playing stuff that doesn't fit at all into a Bill Monroe song. Listen to some other Ronnie McCoury music and you will find that he play's as good Chris, he was just playing the Monroe style on this Monroe song.
@jordan69f5 This is the classic argument of the old vs. the new. Thile has assimilated the essential characteristics of older bluegrass songs/styles but taken his music to a much higher level of compositional and technical prowess, as is evident in his latest two records with punch brothers. No argument there.
wow only 746 views sad. I have watched this around 20 times. tried to learn it. Chris Thile's part. the song its self is easy. but i cant say the same about Thile's part... great video thanks for posting.

"Thile outplays the OTHER GUYS"?
"Overplays" would be more appropriate, in my opinion.
I could listen to these "other guys" forever, by the way.

@jordan69f5 I dont think Thile was trying to make everything think he was better, but simply put....that is the way Thile plays.

He's using a lot of diminished arpeggios (the non-bluesy sounding parts) and double stops. The super fast part is just triplets on a G arpeggio.
