  • capacitor explosion, booooooooooommmmmmmmm!!!!

  • Wow...that was intense! Maybe someone here could answer a related question for me? Why is it when I tried to start my 5HP 110V 20A air compressor while plugged into my 4,200W generator (I know..way too small for the startup current of this sized induction motor), the capacitors (2 of them) literally got so hot they leaked an oily sticky goo out of the cans? I've abandoned any idea of running it off the generator, let it cool down, and it has been working fine for years since this episode. Ideas?

  • Wowsers! That was bad. Could the centrifugal switch (the one that shuts off the capacitor when the motor makes full speed) be sticking and keeping the cap connected after the motor is up to speed?

I've had multiple capacitor explosions but they've all been contained inside the capacitor cover on the motor. At least you didn't get hit in the eye or worse!

  • Was it a start- or run cap?

  • @DragonFlyback256 It was the start cap.

  • hey man. cap's will blow up and look jus like that if they're overloaded or get too hot. i play with high voltage stuff a lot so its a regular thing to see for me :P hehe xD

  • OMG that was an epic capacitor explosion, lol I think i have the exact same capacitor in the video in my junk box too-time to make it go boom :)

  • probably was a weak capacitor, or partially ground winiding....but nice to see the cap. blow up.

  • Wow, crazy! xD

  • @1spaman Tell me Mr Spa Man How I fake a Pump Capacitor blowing up on the bench. I film all of my repairs for teaching and this one happened to catch a capacitor blowing up. Would you like to explain to the class how I could fake this?????

  • @tulsaj1965 No doubt the capacitor blew. If the voltage was higher than the what the cap was rated at. Your reaction to the explosion is what makes this seem fake. You seem way too happy, almost gleeful about it. Respect the power and you may avoid serious injury.

  • @1spaman The Votlage was 230V it is a 370V rated 63-72 uf cap. There is something wrong inside the motor on the low speed I still don't know what I have never seen a cap blow up like that before I was glad I got it on camera. I am not afraid of the voltage. My Company does alot of spa repair and motor repair. I am Professional this is what I do for a living and have 5 employees. I Manufacture Hot Tub Covers and Hot Tubs as well on a small scale. Thanks for your concern. Where are your videos?

  • @1spaman the only thing more pathetic than a troll is a wannabe troll whose comments fail and/or backfire, resulting in the wannabe troll getting owned. That or somebody calls the troll's bluff.

  • @HappyDiscoDeath Watch this Moron: 200V 470uf TV Filter Cap Explosion Vs Apples . From Aussie50. Look it up.

  • @1spaman like he said, explain how he could have faked blowing a capacitor. otherwise, I'd peg you for an armchair expert as opposed to a professional tech. besides, maybe he did blow the cap and got a good chuckle. besides, where in the video did he do something worthy of a "respect the power" warning? tell me, and tell us how he could have faked the explosion.

  • @HappyDiscoDeath Never said the explosion was fake. 2 videos same result. Same response from both people filming it. At least Aussie50 admitted reversing the polarity and applyng incorrrect voltage, he also took the precaution of protecting himself from the explosion.

  • @1spaman you're dodging the question, and I still have yet to see any videos on your channel that you have made. all this and your repeated emphasis (and refusal to see a different view on this) makes you look, quite frankly, like an armchair expert.

  • @1spaman fyi, it doesn't help your argument when you resort to stuff like this that would normally be used by a schoolyard bully. come back and submit another comment that promotes a mature discussion; I won't waste my time on somebody like you.
