Before finding this song performed here I only knew it as part of the show The Black Rider--so interesting to see it out of that extremely different artistic context. It's Waits' song alright, but it probably wouldn't be the same w/out Burroughs and Wilson and The Black Rider co.--in particular the line about "the bullet in my heart." Love to see how elements of original compositions find themselves transplanted (like a rose!) in new soil.
Indeed, and lest we forget, the song finds much of its inspiration in Tom's wife and collaborator, Kathleen Brennan. "And down by Brennan's Glenn there grows/A briar and a rose"
