@lmf800 You would find it rather impossible to fake a rocket launch - telemetry is very complex in its nature, and can be picked up by any idiot with a radio telescope. Additionally, the USSR had no reason to fake it, they had a perfectly capable booster and space capsule. Was the risk high? Of course, but then again so was the voyage of Columbus, Magellan, and Lindbergh. The Soviets took the risk, and succeeded. Gagarin was the first in space, and it is forever.
@lmf800 Additionally, to call "Gagarin" a poster-boy is rather harsh. Gagarin had to endure rigorous training to become a cosmonaut - he had to compete against 23 of the best pilots in the nation to get his seat on Vostok. Not to mention Gagarin went into space not even knowing if humans could swallow in zero gravity - he had to come to terms with all of the unknowns and put his life on the line. Its easy to spit out insults behind a keyboard.
The Soviets kept the fact that Leonov was hot in the suit on his spacewalk and lost 10kg in the process. Astronaut Eugene Cernan found this out the hard way on Gemini 9.
@MrBennetzen Not to mention Leonov suffered a slight case of 'the bends' when he deflated the suit. The Russians used an oxygen/nitrogen blend, while the U.S. used pure oxygen.
