Zinn is pointing out historical facts not just for the sake of criticism but to show everyone that this type of behavior by our government is not only to be regretted but to NOT BE TOLERATED! Why is it so hard for Americans to admit that these events show a degree of corruption,arrogance,and criminality that should not be allowed to continue to exist. The decisions that our political leaders make trigger them. The United States did not have to drive Native Americans from their lands, but the actions of its government and people kept encouraging such displacements to happen. It did not have to take half of Mexico, but a decision was made to do so.

A base level of nationalism is required of all nation-states to ensure there cohesion and therefore survival, states without this base level have many times being overrun by soft power tactics by other nations and assimilated. The first time I read Zinn was for AP US History, I read A Peoples History of the US. At the time I too thought it was socialist bullshit. But then I read what really happened, in my AP textbook (not the watered down version you get in normal history) and I saw that Zinn was absolutely right.

The decisions that our political leaders make trigger them. The United States did not have to drive Native Americans from their lands, but the actions of its government and people kept encouraging such displacements to happen. It did not have to take half of Mexico, but a decision was made to do so.

A base level of nationalism is required of all nation-states to ensure there cohesion and therefore survival, states without this base level have many times being overrun by soft power tactics by other nations and assimilated. Pointing out historical facts isn't saying that America is evil. But the US has done plenty of bad stuff, sticking your fingers in your ears won't change that. Not questioning your own country's actions, and demonizing the other "side's" views as nonsensical is the sort of stuff that totalitarian states tend to push in order to control their citizens.
I think the key to this sort of stuff is to acknowledge that we've don't some bad shit, learn from that, and try not to do it in the future.

Or we could focus on defensive warfare. If we fight purely to protect ourselves, we wont be imposing our will on others, and we wont piss off other nations by attacking them without reason. If we accept these policies then there will be less war, because our enemies wont be able to point in their backyard, and say "Look what those US imperialists did to your country", and in doing so inspire people to figth against the US. The first time I read Zinn was for AP US History, I read A Peoples History of the US. At the time I too thought it was socialist bullshit. But then I read what really happened, in my AP textbook (not the watered down version you get in normal history) and I saw that Zinn was absolutely right.
And yea I'm all for volunteerism in government. So? Why should I be a subjct of a government, when I never gave my consent to be ruled. I believe people can run their own lives.

What me MUST realize is that in reality, there are no party lines. The people who represent us are powerless to the Rothschild, Rockefeller, and affilitates who in reality, RULE the world. Every dime of our taxpayer dollars go to pay the INTEREST owed to this PRIVATE company, and in return the money is lent out again to our govt. to be spent on MOSTLY war.

Well, that may be true, however, this country isn't supposed to be governed by "people." Our fouding fathers said This nation will not be Ruled by Men, But by the Laws of the Land. ANd the means the constitution. ANd the constitution says the government shouldnt be killing people or going to war without the approval of congress.

Yes, that is correct however, THe contitution limits the congress on what laws it can make. Congress isnt supposed to have the power to take away people's rights, no matter how many people agree to it. Our founders intended our nation to have a very restricted Democracy so that we aren't run by the whims of the people. Our nation was meant to be a Republic, where people's rights can never be violated. There are also many other restrictions on congress, check the constitution to find out more.

Highly recommended: A People's History of the United States. Chock-full of historical quotes, from first chapter, on. No one in government, Democratic or Republican, turns out a hero, so it's good to know because we need to keep an eye on everyone we vote in and pay to represent us.

Whether America admits it or not, we are an Empire. Giving the nations that we control and occupy the delusion of sovereignty does nothing to dispute this fact. By not daring to use the "e" word when discussing the use of force to impose "American interest" merely indicates that the American has devised the most clever or cowardly form of empire ever known on the face of the earth. The least we can do is grow a pair and, like the British and Romans, own up to what our true intentions are.

That can't be done. The British and the Roman empires owned up to what they were doing, where's their empire now? While the British still exist their empire has fallen. Our competition, the USSR gave it's people a taste of freedom, look what good it did them. 'Our Empire' Deludes it's subjects, that's us and our protectorates, in order to maintain itself and it's power. I wouldn't call it cowardly or clever, but necessary. I'm sure if it were necessary, the empire would own up.We can't stop 'em.
