this version was released on Stiff records - at the time poor old DD was so poor he couldn't afford a telephone ... another talent shafted by the record industry...
@jonjuliecat True enough we were both skint and signing on, he had a family to support, which kind of made the lyrics as poigniant as ever for him I'm sure. If it hadn't been for a speculative intervention by Vic Keary at Chalk Farm studios, there wouldn't have been a deal with Stiff and to be fair to Mr Robinson Stiff did come up with a bit of dough - for DD & other talented artists the real shafting went on in the sixties, hang on I have never recieved any royalties for DD stuff I produced!
@lolgellor ... there are still plenty of talented artists around that still have to keep their day jobs ... I could name a few around here .... one band here on their last major label sold 60k copies in the UK. Can't get a major label to take any interest in their last album even though it has been widely praised by the music press and played on 6music ... oh well :-(
Main musicians on this "version" a Ska band from Hull called the Akrylkz including a young Roland Gift , sax solo Davy Payne from the Blockheads, BV's George Dekker and Jackie Robinson (the Pioneers). Recorded Chalk Farm Studios I had the honour to work with the great man (producer ) he was very happy to revisit his great tune in contemporary up tempo style at the time. We had great fun, I understand not every ones cup of tea but bless up the many positive words DD RIP
Love it. In todays society we must be able to think outside the box or between the lines. For those of us who know we are true Israelites, we welcome any and all versions who bring the truth to light..
As this had a release on Stiff Records, it could be that Madness may have had a role to play in its re-recording. I played it at my recent MOD Revival Night off its original vinyl as it is great and quite fitting but I still also play ythe original satisfying both camps :D
Why does every dam' thread about different artists covering the same song, or different versions by the same artist, have to turn into a debate about which one's "best"?
They're different, that's all -- and they can all be appreciated for what they are. "Different" doesn't always mean "better" or "worse."
I've loved the original track for years. Never heard this one til right now (so thank you Funkyard!) -- and now I'm happy to have a different version to love too.
smartalek1,I agree, whether a cover or a remake of your own song, you either like it or not,I have never heard this before and I like it,maybe the original is still my fav,but to each his own,The Beatles covered the Isley Bros. Twist and Shalt, both were great, Beatles just happened to sell millions more Elvis covered Blue suede shoe after Carl Perkins and The Beatles made different versions of many songs they wrote and recorded.
WHAT? if anyone appreciated musicality, they would hate this version. Part of the magic of the original is the drum intro, and the authentic beat, this is gay. Well atleast his voice had held up to that point.
I like this version, and the fast tempo makes it better for dancing. Desmond Dekker's voice is also more mature than in his earlier recordings, which is a plus.
They didnt mix anything, this is a re-recording from 1980. Theres nothing in this version left over from the 1969 original. Its completely re-recorded.
@gittahfiend yo this is the best version of this song and you and everyone who voted you up, those people are all herbs. the people below this comment agreeing, they, too, are herbs. get dancing shoes and ears.
@gittahfiend Geez, if this is disco, they'll have to re-categorize The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Specials. I guess they're disco too and that all those artists got it wrong. They'll be glad the expert you call yourself, is here to notice these things. grow the fuck up ignoramus.
"A handful of British hits followed "The Israelites," including "It Miek" (#7, 1969) and "You Can Get It If You Really Want" (#2, 1970), written for him by Jimmy Cliff. A reissue of "The Israelites" returned him to the British Top Ten in 1975. "Sing a Little Song" made the Top Twenty later that year. Dekker didn't record again until 1980, when Stiff Records signed him at the height of the ska and rock-steady revival." By all accounts...Desmond Dekker was, most definitely, ska.
Get up in the morning, slaving for bread sir so that every mouth can be fed poor me, The Israelites My wife and my kids are packed up and they leave me darling said i was yours to be seen poor me, The Israelite shirt them a tear up, trousers are gone i dont want to end up like bonny and clyde poor me The Israelite after a storm there must be a calm they catch me in the farm. you sound the alarm i wonder who im working for i look a-down and out, sir

and this is disco because..... ?
guarani527 2 years ago
because of the drum machine.or the "machine" sounding beat.

If you can't hear the disco influence on this track then you're either deaf or stupid.
monolith94 2 years ago
explain yourself monolith. I hear ska: the syncopated guitar chords, fast tempo, heavy brass section, and major tonality.
