I wonder why everyone seems to think that Esmeralda has to be a nice person; that definitely was spoiled by Hollywood. in the novel she's young, naive, shallow, dumb and extremely annoying (if you think her in terms of the real person which she's not) and I'm glad they kept the trait. I absolutely loath those adaptions which make her a sympathetic character or, even worse, one that challenges the authority (see Disney). That's soooo way off from Hugo's intention

No. I don't know of any movie version that includes Esmeralda's mother. Too bad. It's such a great plot twist, but I suppose directors consider it superfluous to the main story.

This is hillarious. Esmeralda is just having one of those teen strops and Quasi is completely at ends of how to handle it. If this was set in modern times she'd be throwing her mobile at him and he'd be shielding himself with a skateboard. I love how close this is to the book.
I know everyone is classing her as a 'bitch' but you have to take into account she is angry, cooped up in a bell tower and has had to make do protecting herself for a while. She is going to lash out at anyone.
she only cares about pheobus i read the book she fell in love with him when he saved her from quasimodo man i love this book tragedies are my fav. i wish they made a sequel instead of falling inlove with pheobus falls inlove with pierre gringore i think it would of been a happy ending
I can see why Disney changed her and this story so much for their version. I'm glad they did. There's more likeable charcters, and though Quasi doesn't get the girl (until movie 2 anyway) he does get the ending he deserves.

When Quasimodo says in the novel that he's willing to throw himself of the heights tower of Notre dame for her if i was him i'd just throw her of the hieghts flippen tower of notre dame and be done with it
maybe that's to harsh but really poor Quasimodo he tried to get Phoebus for her she could at least thank him for that
