Get Smart, Maxwell Smart and Don Adams. Still, respectively, my favorite tv show, secret agent and actor.
Watching scenes from this show never get old, no matter how many times I see them. Siegfried and The Craw have to be two of the most unique villains of all time as well.
This is the same old story. It amazes me that people are focusing on the Asian man in this skit. Some people say it’s racist because of the way he talks. Well that’s comedy. Stop and think about Max. He plays a blundering idiot white man. But you don’t here me complaining. I am white. I think he is hilarious. All races have great people and bad people. Funny people and sad people. There is nothing wrong with having fun with each others cultures and speech.
I worked for a Japanese company for over 10 years. There is not a phonetic equivalent for the letters L and R in the Japanese language. They do have to learn and overcome a natural tendency to make those apparent linguistic mistakes. Is it racist to highlight that point? Perhaps, not any more than Eminem singing rap.
No I didn't think it odd. Back in those days Indians and Asians in movies often were not actually of such ancestry. For instance Charlie Chan was a fictional Chinese Detective in a show and played by an american actor of Scottish ancestry. Now remember Uncle Benny (Kim Chan) from Lethal Weapon 4, he is from China and a favorite character. They now have pleanty of good Asian actors to use now huh.
One of the funniest TV scenes ever! It is amazing how the humor of Get Smart is still relevant. I felt they should have used this scene in the movie, it would have made it better.
"He's bruffing!" Notice, when comparing to the shite Steve Carrel movie, how this clip has some serious spy movie tension to it amid the fondly-remembered gags. The old-time rapport of the Bond villains with our hero is all here too, the idea that what we've got is a disagreement between gentlemen...
i use to watch get smart when i was a kid all the time and the 2008 movie wasnt that bad, i mean have u seen the get smart movies don adams did in the 80's they were awful, and realy the only problem with the 2008 movie was zeigfreed was too serious
Siegfried was too serious, the writers just paid passing reference to the things that made Get Smart great, the tried to not have to credit Mel Brooks and Buck Henry in the movie, the jokes were lame instead of timely. Anne Hathaway pulled off 99 very well, other than that, it was awful. And yes, so was the Nude Bomb.
Also funny how the branding iron had to be made in the right reading form - "KAOS" - so the audience could read it, but of course if you used it, you'd be burning backwards and reverse order letters into your victim! It would be quite the mysterious burn for people to decipher!
I'm asian and I thought it was pretty funny. Everyone needs to lighten up and laugh once in a while. Its nowhere near as bad as the other asian stereotypes presented in tv even today.
I'm 55-years old and remember the 1960's as the "Golden Age of TV Comedy" and Don Adams' Maxwell Smart was one of the reasons. I'm an Asian American and have always found this lallative error schtick with "The Craw" very funny. My mother, from Japan, also found it funny. Both of us knew that there was nothing cruel about the joke. People are walking on eggshells about laughing at anything that even suggests race or ethnicity. Insults were not what "Get Smart" was all about. It was just funny.
I hate politicaly correct. it ruins both humor and accuracy. the ONLY time I have EVER agreed with the PC nutjobs is with "native american" the rest of the time they are doing ecactly what francess bacon called the "idol of the marketplace" and all 4 idols are impediments of truth which beset mens minds,.
@TAPriceCTR It's ok. You're right, and you know, my family and I make references to this ep all the time. We're not PC crazy or anything, we just try to be nice to people.
Diplomat's Daughter is a GET SMART Classic. Just in this particular segment, lots and lots of classic lines. "I suppose you can guess what they call me?.... Lefty?" so funny!!
This show set the groundwork for evil Asian stereotypes. Asians are NOT silly buffoons. Some of them are quite serious entertainers like...like...William Hung!
R.J. Reynolds [Salem] discontinued their sponsorship after the third season (or possibly the fourth, I'm not sure)- Don was "required" by them to smoke on camera during almost every episode in the first three seasons (the better for product identification), and appear in an integrated "comedy" commercial for them at the end of their sponsored episodes. Possibly some of them are in private collectors' hands, waiting to be seen again...
Whenever the Claw appeared I would crack up, thats one of the best episodes ever I think. I also loved that the one with the Lazer Blazer, or as the Craw says Razor Brazer, lol. That had the Craw in it also! I'm so easily amused, thanks for the post!
I saw this episode ONE TIME at my cousin's house and I never forgot the "Lefty" line and "Not the Craw! The Craw!" I still laugh just thinking about it. I'm glad I got to show my 14 year old son a little bit of great comedy! I was waiting for Max to throw the silverware at the Craw!
Note that Max "lights up" a lot in just about every episode, including this one {2:42}- he had to; R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. [Salem] was the show's primary sponsor during the first three seasons, and insisted that Don smoke in at least one key scene [he also plugged their product in "integrated" commercials at the end of the show].
You don't happen to have any of the footage for the cig commercials on hand do you? Don continued to smoke on camera in the fourth season, but during the fifth I don't think anyone was seen smoking on the show.
This was always one of my favorites of Maxy. The 'Craw' is one of the best of Kaos, second only to Sigfried.
I love the beginning where Max and 99 meet the princess. He describes her as a sweet freckled faced girl. She comes out as a beautiful twenty year old who starts making out with him.
"isn't she sweet? She hasn't changed a bit."
99 with jealously-"She must've been was quite a 15 year old."
This has always been one of my favorite episodes. The Craw, not the Craw. Too funny. It wouldn't fly today. Another example of political correctness ruining all the fun.
Lefty? one of the funniest scenes from the funniest show ever...like many Get Smart shows, it was a take-off on something else. This was from an old Green Hornet show, only the Green Hornet knew his name was The Claw.
